  1. We went into one of the company stores last September in Ketchikan and they had a good selection of 5X in one corner, think it was the Tongass Trading Company. Right next to the cruise pier, think they have a couple outlets.
  2. I guess one question to consider is if you need a suite? We started off with NCL and twice have cramed 5 in an inside cabin (would not recommend), including my late cranky mother. But really how much time are you going to spend there? We have slowly climbed up the ladder, moving from ocean view to different verandas In our case we spend very little time in the cabin. Even on a trans pacific with many days at sea, did not spend too much time there. We mostly cruise Celebrity now, recently did the Eclipse with 4 of us in a Sunset Veranda, boys 15 and 21. Celebrity is great, just enough young people to keep the boys happy, but not overwhelming with too many kids. The kid and teen programs have always been good, so the kids were always happy. Of course the eldest is old enough to hit the bars now, so a whole new world for him.
  3. Yes Creek Street in Ketchikan. Easy walk from the cruise pier, rentals at Dollys. We were last there Sept 2nd and still fish around, a few people fishing. Seen it packed there mid July to mid August. Years ago people even fished and caught from the docks, but don't think that is allowed anymore
  4. Wow, just wow. Don't worry, the next time I cross the line to my US investments I will wear a condom so we can all be safe.
  5. Well yes I agree as it is linked to our passport, but we were not even asked to see our passports. I guess in the case of disembarking a cruise, everyone has already been screened prior to embarkation, so risks are probably considered low, and trying to empty 3 ships at once is quite a task.
  6. As Canadians we sailed out of Vancouveron Aug 28th and did not have to show arrivecan when boarding the ship. Couldn't fill in arrivecan using the basic wifi,so turned on my data the last day and was able to complete the form. Upon our arrival back in Vancouver was never asked to present the form. Just handed in the usual customs declaration and that was it.
  7. Many years ago we were on a rental car shuttle back to the airport. There was some poor soul on that bus with 2 broken limbs and road rash everywhere. They forgot to tighten the front tire on his bike prior to the ride down. Oops
  8. In 2019 we rented from Av is in Lahaina. Shuttle picked us up near the dock, was a fair ride out to pick up car, but we had an overnight there so not a big deal. Another family we met took a cab that mistakenly took them to the airport and dropped them off there. Only gripe was finding overnight parking in Lahaina, quite expensive we did luck out and found a free spot right near the dock
  9. Never silly. Know where they are, make sure you have the right number, and definitely the right fit.
  10. A round trip Vancouver departure will travel up the east side of Vancouver Island, so saves a few hundred miles of open water each way. At some point you will have some open water, usually the first morning in a following sea, the last sea day it will be usually around noon. Either way, try get up on deck for fresh air and watch the horizon. Check the itineraries of the lines you are interested in. ICY straight and Sitka stops may add a little more open ocean. Although both wonderful ports, perhaps you should look for Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan. Best wishes and really hope you go.
  11. Geez I've deleted my comment on this because I'd open up too many cans of worms. But will say the whole reason we cruise celebrity exclusively now is that 10 years ago I sent my 12 yr old with my old mother on a cruise. He came back and said Dadyou really need to cruise Celebrity. Now we do.
  12. They are good for groups on shore, however make sure they are allowed in the country you are visiting. They can be deemed illegal for various reasons
  13. I believe the answer is no. I am sure I have read it somewhere in the passenger contract or whatever it is called.
  14. Yeah this is what I fear. Have a couple of move up bids for our next cruise and sort of fear winning one.
  15. Going back to the OP, have as much as you want. As for my eldest son and I, its a given, escargot every night plus an additional appy. My youngest son is a carnivor, so its 2 New Yorks medium rare on a single plate. Enjoy.
  16. Unfortunately its an arbitrary number that has probably been set up for liability reasons I assume. In my case I had a cardiac incident at 52, totally fine now, but keeps me out of a lot of snorkeling and diving excursions I definitely could take. I guess I just have to keep a t shirt on and hide the scars. Its like a drivers license though, here the age is 16. Some kids could do it at 12, others shouldn't at 25. Guess they have to draw the line somewhere
  17. Well if you're willing to put in some time, always see whales from the ship, though they are usually in the distance, not as exciting as a tour but still whales. I'd say for a 9yr old a pair of non jeans or some nice new ones and a few polo style shirts will work just fine. Just not a grubby old t shirt, though I have seen kids in them in the MDR. Definitely take him to the MDR for the experience, if the menu does not appeal they will get him something, staff are great.
  18. Nice! I think you should bring it. Lots of good advice here. Also when close to land or charted aids one can use it horizontally to plot a fix. I own 3, a cheap plastic knock off of a Davis, a good Eastern German one, truly a thing of beauty, and an aircraft sextant 24volt that was used through the top of the fuselage. Wishing you success. Final note, my wife's BFF brother (EX cdn coastguard) used one to navigate from Vancouver to Sydney, but every 3 or 4 days would confirm with GPS.
  19. Same here in Canada and the $1 and $2 coins are too heavy. I would say the USD can be easily used by the crew on any Celebrity itinerary, whether they are using it for on board purchases or transferring money home. For on shore excursions it is probably the same. An old friend of mine drove tour coaches for a while and was tipped in all sorts or currencies, never an issue exchanging it.
  20. Just hit the bank yesterday and got 300 in small bills, will probably get another 100. We are a family of 4. Typically we tip 10 a day for the room attendant, never had an attendant that did not deserve it, usually give it on the last evening. We usually only use the MDR, and if seated with the same staff each night, I will tip nightly, 10 to the waiter, 5 to the Jr waiter and wine Steward if I'm kept topped up. May tip 1 or 2 to bartenders if I'm getting reasonable service. Kids club is often overlooked, and ours have certainly used it, so if they are happy then 60 to 100 depending on time spent there It is optional, I tip extra because I appreciate the hard work the staff does to make my trip a wonderful experience. I just posted my amounts as another example. Its really up to you, no amount is right or wrong. Have a happy Alaska, be there in 7 weeks too.
  21. If remember right the minimum for roulette was $5 back in 2019.
  22. On Alaska cruises i have brought smoked salmon, canned salmon, and riendear sausage (jerky) back on board, never an issue on these sealed items.
  23. Looks like the price has gone up DW did it October 2019, it was $65 for a small ball. Booked it on line and picked a time once on ship. Turned out very nice
