  1. We have reservations at this resort in March for 2 nights pre cruise. Usually stay at Embassy Suites but this resort is already up and running. Has anyone stayed there and can let me know what you thought about it.

We are booked here in 2 days pre cruise on the Summit, Thanksgiving the 23rd and 24th. Stayed in San Juan about a dozen times, never here at the Renaissance. Will let you know about the hotel and surroundings.

We have been canceled by Caribe Hilton, Embassy Suites and InterContinental.

  2. Well folks, we have some great news to start off the week here on St. John. The National Park Service opened yet another beach over the weekend. Trunk Bay has been cleared and cleaned, and is ready to take guests. This brings the total number of beaches that are officially open to three. Hawksnest and Honeymoon were reopened last week.

As you may all remember, Trunk sustained a considerable amount of damage during Hurricane Irma. Since then, crews from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Grand Teton National Park, Big Bend National Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gettysburg National Military Park, Yellowstone National Park and of course the Virgin Islands National Park have been working diligently to clean up the brush and get the area ready for visitors.

  3. November 8, 2017, road to Maho Bay.

But the damage inflicted by Hurricane Irma on the forests of St. John September 6 may be much worse than anyone suspected. The upper western-facing slopes, including Mamey Peak and the Cinnamon and Maho Bay watersheds, have been particularly affected. Seven weeks after the storm, there are still swaths of forest where the trees are lying flat, and little that is green can be seen.

“I’m afraid there’s been a great deal of tree death there,” said native species expert Eleanor Gibney. “The sheer force of the gusts, estimated at 250 mph, separated the bark from the wood. No tree can survive that.”

  5. San Juan National Historic Site reopens the doors of Castillo San Cristóbal to the public

    :D :p :D

It is with gratitude and enthusiasm that from Monday, 20 November 2017, the national historic site of San Juan announces its reopening, beginning with opening the doors of st. Christopher's castle to the public.

The Castle San Felipe del morro will remain closed until the electrical service is restored. The entrance to san cristóbal will be free of charge while you have limited access to the facilities, so we invite you to enjoy, explore and reconnect with our cultural heritage and world heritage.

Strength, splendor, resilience. It is with these values and characteristics that we can well describe what historical fortifications represent, and it is also what we hope to inspire and provoke in everyone who visits us, while moving together towards recovery.

Stay tuned to our social networks, since we will soon be sharing our special reopening programming!

  7. We booked the Sandy Beach Hotel for our arrival day of Dec 29, and the Embassy Suites by Hilton for the two days after our cruise.

Sandy Beach says we're ok, see you then in a phone call.

Embassy Suites didn't sound as reassuring and asked that we call back in Dec. anyone have any intel on both these properties?

This from another poster four days ago.

FYI: I called Embassy Suites San Juan to confirm our booking for January 13th and they said we should have gotten a cancellation email and that they wouldn't be housing people (other than government) until at least March. We never got the cancellation email so I just cancelled the booking myself.
  8. This thread was posted today!

About 29 power restoration brigades from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have arrived today in Old San Juan, and along with 6 others from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, are getting right to work this week. 80% power restoration in the old city and surrounding neighborhoods is expected within the week. This should power up most hotels, restaurants, stores and attractions, to include the forts of the San Juan National Historic Site.

Thank you NY, NJ and CT!

  9. We just stayed at DoubleTree on November 12 and 13. They were fully operational. Electricity (not by generator), pool, hot tub, restaurant on site, grocery store across the street. Traffic lights were not working but shuttle drivers seem to know what they are doing dealing with this.

Excellent, nice to hear, just read they are working hard to restore power to Old San Juan, hopefully the Forts will be open for our arrival Thanksgiving weekend.

We are staying at Double Tree by Hilton on Nov 23rd and 24th pre-cruise. Confirmed our reservation with Juan at the Hotel this morning.

  11. Speaking with the owners of Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort in St. Thomas on Friday, Governor Kenneth Mapp was told that the cost to rebuild the resort — which the owners have pledged to construct anew, had grown to $400 million, a realization that will more than likely move the 18-month reopening timeline further into the future, as the construction cost associated with the prior 18-month estimation was $200 million.

  13. Just checked into the Best Western Condado Palms. We were relieved that they were honoring our reservation after reading about so many last minute cancellations by other hotels.

  15. eek gads! Double Tree cancelled 12/1-12/3 but it is still on-line booking thru third parties. I sent them an email asking why they cancelled me if they are accepting reservations for the dates I had reserved/prepaid. I did get a prompt response from their main office and they are investigating. Oh, the rate for the rooms is more than doubled. HMM...something fishy here. I did see that they were FEMA approved. We were also booked at the Sheraton for 12/17-12/19. They did notify me of the cancellation last week. Hubby is concerned that we will be encountering angry and hungry PR folks and it may not be safe to stay there. He prefer we leave the day of the cruise.and I feel we can show our support by spending dollars there. The discussion goes on....

Not good to hear, we have Doubletree reserved for Nov 23 - 25th pre-cruise, I talked to them last week and they confirmed the reservation, this is our 4th reservation after being cancelled by Caribe Hilton, Embassy Suites and Intercontinental.

  18. WASHINGTON, Oct. 20, 2017 — The Army Corps of Engineers is installing up to 500 temporary generators until Puerto Rico’s old and deteriorating power grid can be made operational again, but long-term total power restoration could take nearly a year, the Corps’ chief of engineers told reporters at the Pentagon today.
