  1. Welcome to Cruise Critic and the Viking Oceans forum, Once you get on board, Viking will make tours available for continuing guests. They are not available to guests who are boarding that day, hence are not listed on MyVikingJourney.com. At least this is how it worked a few years ago when our changeover day was in Rome. I can't confirm that they have it worked out for Athens, but I am sure that someone will be along shortly who can. The tours offered will be the same as what is already being offered on the other days, which are listed on the itinerary for tour cruise on the Viking website and run by the same providers handling the rest of the tours in Athens.
  2. Sorry, that is a perfectly awful sentence. I got lost in the editing. It should read: My suggestion is to start on page 45...
  3. My suggestion to everyone who is just find this thread is to start on page 45 of the thread. Scroll down to the first of the 2021 posts and start reading. There may be a lot of posts that deal with sailing under Covid protocols that no longer exist that you can easily skip. Still, the most current information will be found here. Once you have gotten through the post-Covid posts, go back to page one and skim forward, if you want. There is a lot of repetition and some of the early posts are outdated. Actually, this is my advice on how to approach any long thread that has been around for multiple years. The most relevant information is found in the past year to 18 months. Find the 18 months ago point in the thread and start reading from there. Once you finish that, then you can decide if you've read enough or want to go back to the beginning to read more.
  4. There are two nightstands in each cabin. The outlet in the bathroom is for low wattage items only -- shavers and toothbrushes. A high wattage item will blow the fuse. Extension cords/leads are on the list of prohibited items "Extension cords (USB and laptop charging cables are exempt)" For the complete list: Prohibited Items List (PDF) Bookmark this link because this list is one of those hidden secrets, unless you know exactly where to look (via the FAQ link in the footer of every page on the Viking website, then search for "prohibited").
  5. Thank you, Host Jazzbeau. Yes, please. Up to this point, this thread has been a great help to newbies looking to make the best of their first Viking cruise. It would be great if it were permitted to continue doing what it has been doing so well.
  6. Even if you are certain that legal in the countries you are visiting, you still have find out if permitted on Viking.
  7. Agreed! If they can't fulfill the guarantee, then it should be removed as perk (not that I want to see it go). It is like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.
  8. For years, TellUs@ has been my go-to for help and information. It is sad to see that, post hiatus, they have quickly become as ineffective as the chat and call center. Very disappointing to hear the current reports of failed interactions.
  9. I've been there a couple of times with Viking and I can't remember if we had show our keycards in order to get through the gate before entering the terminal. Maybe someone else has a better memory than it do. If as Dr. Koob suggests, the terminal is not being used, then there are a couple of cafes on the property where you could meet. Cafe/bars are highlighted in yellow, Red T by the two bars is a cab stand. Red X in front of the terminal is another possible meeting spot (but does not offer shelter).
  10. Hang up, count to 60 and call again. Repeat until you get someone who can help you. Or e-mail tellus@vikingcruises.com and ask for their help (include booking number and phone number).
  11. The return time is also used to calculate if there is enough time to make a second tour that day. Return time plus at least half hour (can't ever remember the exact interval) tells the computer if there is a conflict or not (and that includes if there is a conflict with a dining reservation). If you do have a time conflict for a second tour that day, do not give up hope. If there is space, you can always buy the tour on the dock. Just talk with the shorex staff on the pier. Also note that we are asked to report to the meeting point (stated in the Daily deliver to our cabin the evening before) 15 minutes prior to departure.
  12. The perk is minimal but it benefits both the referrer and the referred.
  13. I think we all have the same reaction to sleep7's review.
  14. I'm just repeating on big bold letters because it is a very important point. While katlew's suggestions works, it isn't the only way to do it. The couple who can book soonest should make their reservation as soon as possible. When booking has opened for the second, call Viking and ask them to add the second couple (keep calling until you find an agent who knows how to do it; else e-mail tellus@vikingcruises.com). You will need name and booking number of the the second couple. If the second couple has fewer advanced reservation this will count as their advanced reservation(s) for that restaurant. For the rest of the reservations, you will have to wait until you board the ship to join them.
  15. Welcome to Cruise Critic and to the Viking Oceans forum. You seem a bit naive about how things really work in the cruise industry. Before you go ballistic, you should read more about what the cruise line can do in the normal course of business under the terms of the ticket contract that guests agree to when they book. You will find the Viking documents here; there are two of them: Booking Terms and Conditions: http://vikingcruises.com/terms-and-conditions Passenger Ticket Contract: http://vikingcruises.com/passengerticketcontract Putting down a deposit means that you accept the terms of these two contracts, so best to read them before you book. Please understand that ships docks where they are told to, not where they want, regardless of what it says on the itinerary. It is not considered a "change of product" as the possibility of such changes in the normal course of business is covered in the Passenger Ticket Contract.
  16. It has been 7am on our last two cruises, both post-Covid -- and on ships that were less than half full. If they are back to 8am fleet wide, I'm not complaining.
  17. WooHoo! You are finally getting there!
  18. There is one "included" excursion per port, usually some sort of overview, and a slew of optional excursions. Occasionally, there are two included per port but you may only choose one. We do have to reserve a space and best done prior to boarding. If you book a DV you can't ride on your buddies' coattails when it comes to advance booking specialty restaurants and shorex but most problems can be remedied with a phone to Viking once booking opens for your DVs or once you get on board -- with the caveat that post-Covid, things involving reservations are not quite back to normal. You will still be limited to one advanced reservation for each specialty restaurant but at least the one reservation can be linked with your friends before you board. Disembarking depends on your transfer time not your cabin #. If you don't have Viking transfers you may disembark any time. You will all be asked to vacate your cabins by 7am. PV may get more advanced dining reservations, but once on board you may reserve as many as they will let you, so they can add you to any other reservations your friends already have. They do try to give everybody a chance. On a one week cruise, it may be harder to get reservations. So, I hope this covers the bumps in the road and that you decide to join your buddies for a great time in the Med with Viking! Now as for dealing with CruiseCritic boards, post editing has a 20(??) minute window and once posted cannot be deleted except at the discretion of the management, even duplicates. It is possible to edit the duplicate to delete everything and replace with a word or two. I like "Oops," others use something about duplicate post. In any case, it is all to minor to worry about. Duplicates happen!
  19. Nor does it give you daily minibar replenishment in the V cabins. The drinks package does not cover the minibar operation at all.
  20. Yes, but the Expedition ships are an entirely different experience. OP should discuss suitability directly with Viking, as there are itineraries that cannot accommodate pax in wheel chairs because of considerations that go beyond the ship and the crew. Contact them at tellus@vikingcruises.com. It is a few rungs up the customer service ladder and should be able to discuss not just issues onboard the ship but at the various ports as well.
  21. What is the wattage of the device and what kind of plug does it have? Is the plug two-pronged or three-pronged? Are the blade shaped prongs the same size or two different sizes. With this information contact Viking directly. Best to email them so that they can track the correct information. Tellus@vikingcruises.com
  22. You have chosen a very bad period of time in which to cruise. Just because the cruise lines are up and running does not mean that the rest of the cruise industry is ready to support them and in fact they are not. Men and women who made their living in the tourism industry lost their jobs in March, 2022. Tourguides, bus driver, longshoremen and even management had to find new jobs to support themselves and their families. They need to eat and pay the rent and they cannot afford to return to the industry until they can be promised full-time employment, if they return at all. The restart is going much slower than expected. There are too many cruise ships vying for scarce resources. At the same time, ports are taking new stances on cruise ship visits. Venice closed its canals to cruise ships and all cruise ships must dock in Fusina, Chioggia and even further down the coast. Viking has little control over this. It is just one in a list ports that have banned or put limits on cruise ship calls. This is not a good time to be running a cruise line. Nothing is like it was three years ago. Nothing is anywhere near back to normal. Those who have high expectation and are not willing to go with the flow should strongly consider canceling plans to sail until the entire industry is in a better place. Depending on the length of the cruise, bookings can be canceled up to 121 days (6 months for cruises of more than ? many days) prior to departure for 100% refund less $100 ($1000)pp. This is spelling out in the passenger ticket contract and the booking terms and conditions documents, links to which appear in the footer of every page on the Viking website.
