  1. Hi again,

With respect to the walk from Vasa to the ferry. Do we walk back out to the main road and walk to Allmanna Grand?

I believe there are 2 stops, Rantmastartruppan and Slottsbacken.

Is Slottsbacken right near the Palace. I thought it was referred to as "Palace Hill".

I think it should be possible to turn right when coming out from Vasa and then follow the side of museum to the small boat harbor and then along the harbour out to Alkärret road and follow the tram tracks along Falkenbergsgatan to Allmänna Gränd but I have never walked the middle part of the route myself, so I would like some with local knowledge to confirm.

Straight English translation of "Slottsbacken" is "Palace Hil"l

  2. Is it possible to walk from stadsgarden where our ship is docking, s167 to be precise, to hornsgatan 26a sodermalm? from google maps it looks like there is a highway which might block pedestrian traffic.

If you refer to Söderleden, then it goes in fact in a tunnel under the street, so that should be no problem to cross.

  3. One more question if you don't mind - is the Royal Armory the same as the King Gustav III Museum of Antiquities??

No, the King Gustav III Museum of Antiquities as a (rather small if I'm correctly informed) collection of antique statues what the king brought home from Italy in 1784. It's in the basement of the northern side wing of the building.

The entrance of the Armory is on the south side and the museum is in the cellar of the east side of the palace and still further down there is a hall for Royal carrages under the southern side wing.

Then there is also the "Three Crown" museum that tells about the old palace what was destroyed in a fire 1687 and about the building of the new palace. Entrance from north. That museum takes up much of the basement on the northern and west side.

One level up, on the ground floor on the south side (the palace is built on a hill so thats why entrances are on different levels) is the entrance to the Royal Chapel, the Hall of State and the steps to the Treasury far below the palace.

On the ground floor west side, finally, is the entrance to the palace itself with exhibitions on the first and second floor (some 36 rooms in total I think)

  4. We've seen the Changing of the Guard (on Princess Victoria's birthday in 2008!) but have never been inside the Palace. I've gotten information on their web site about times and prices but wonder if they ever run-out of tickets? I can't find any where to order tickets in advance (as Buckingham Palace).

I visited the Palace two years ago. I had expected to have to follow some strict arrangements but found to my delight that it was very much a "walk around as you please" thing even if guided tours started off at regular intervals.

  5. At one point, I thought the 24 hour travel card included the Djurgården ferry ride; however, the info has been updated on the SL site. Has the ferry ride been deleted?

    Sharon

The problem here might be that the ferry is owned by Waxholmsbolaget rather than Stockholm Local Traffic so the info the latter's web site might be a bit sloppy regarding the ferry.

If I understand Waxholmsbolaget's own site (I found it in Swedish only) correctly then 24h ticket DO include the ferry ride. The key word is "opersonliga periodkort" = impersonal period card, and I understand that the 24h card is just that.

  6. does anyone know where the star princess anchors in stockholm? I have read that if it anchors at nynashamn, #638, if so, that is almost one hour away from the city center. How would one get to the hop on hop off bus or boat if that is the case? Thank you. Cathy

Stadsgården is the one about a mile southeast of Old Town.

  7. Ok, for anyone interested in using Stockholm subway (Tunnelbana), especially the route "Gamla Stan" - "T-Centralen".

    Map:

    http://sl.se/ficktid/karta%2Fvinter/Tub.pdf

    - All subway entrances are marked by a white circle with a blue "T".

    - There are two lines doing this particular route, the red and the green one. Note that the colors are just names and has nothing to do with the color of the trains themselves (usually blue/silver).

    - Note that the subway traffic is left handed so the trains will enter the stations from the "wrong" end.

    - "Gamla Stan" in old town is a four track station with two tracks for each line. This station is on the street level. This particular station (as is next station southwards, "Slussen") is built so that the two northwards going tracks have one platform and the two southwards another. (This is to simplify transfer from one line to another)

    - "T-Centralen", at Stockholm's commerical center, is a complex and rather crowdy station supporting three subway lines. Its built in two planes (35' and 55' under the street) with two tracks each under Klarabergsgatan with tracks for the blue line further down (100' under the street) and a bit on the side. Here, again to simplify transfer, the lines are mixed so that upper platform will be for the red line southwards and the green line northwards while the lower platform red line northhwards, green line southwards.

    - You can use a Stockhol Card or a travel card (100kr for 24 hours). Cash tickets costs a horrible 2 coupons of 20 kr = 40 kr for one trip.

Going from "Gamla Stan" to "T-Centralen":

The best entrance for tourists should be at the corner "Mälartorget - Schönfelds Gränd". For some reason that entrance doesn't show up on the Google maps.

Its a quite discreet thing, just glass doors and steps leading down one floor to a tunnel that leads under Munkbroleden road to the ticket hall. There one gate is manned with a small ticket boot (as far as I know only selling zone tickets, not cards), the other gates are automatic. If you have a travel card you can open those by pulling the card in a slot and pushing the horisontal bar forward.

The "Gamla Stan" station is on the street level so once past the ticket office you should go upwards again. Look for the signs MÖRBY, ROPSTEN, HÄSSELBY, ÅKERSHOV or ALVIK showing the

way to the platform for northwards going trains (thats the platform further to the west/towards the water) and there, take any train regardless if it enters on the left or the right side of platform as both will go to T-Centralen. There are boards counting down the minutes, changing to show the destination and number of cars as soon as the train arrives.

T-Centralen" will be the next station, Depending on if you used the green or the red line you'll end up at the lower or the upper platform. If you happen to end up on the lower platform, don't be confused by the fact there are short escalators going to the upper platform and long escalators going direct to the ticket halls.

    There are two ticket halls.

Turning left after exiting the train the escalators will take you to the ticket hall near Sergels Torg (corner ""Drottninggatan-Klarabergsgatan") with a straight entrance to the left to Åhlens department store.

Turning right after exiting the train the escalators will take you to the ticket hall with exits near corner "Vasagatan-Klara Vattugränd" and a underpass leading into the Central railway station.

Going the other way "T-Centralen" to "Gamla Stan":

Its the same procedure but you'll have to select to go either to the upper platform, taking trains NORSBORG or FRUÄNGEN or the lower platform, taking trains HAGSÄTRA, FARSTRA or SKARPNÄCK.

NOTE. About 150 metres north of the Central Station near the Ice Bar there are subway entrances at Vasagatan 9 and across the street at Vasagatan 36. DON'T USE THOSE as they will take you to a third ticket hall that

will go to the blue line only.

This site shows pictures of the stations

  8. What would be the best transport from Gamla Stan to Absolut Ice Bar? or should we go to Absolut Ice Bar first and then Gamla Stan?

Well, one option, if you are confident in reading maps and not afraid to get lost, is to rotate the gamla Stan counterclockwise from the ferry ending up in the southwest corner and then locate the subway station at corner Mälartorget - Schönfeldts Gränd and take the subway one stop northwards to the T-central and take the west side exit near the railway station. That would be quite close to the ice bar. I could give more detail instructions if anyone is interested.

  9. Frihamnen from Gamla Stan? You don't need the T-Bana. The 76 bus runs onto Gamla Stan. In fact, I think the next stop after Slussen is the one right beside the palace.

I fact #76 seems to stop twice in Gamla Stan, first at "Räntmästartrappan" where the Djurgården ferry goes and then at "Slottsbacken" (Palace Hill).

Dont even consider going to Slussen in this case.

But you could consider as mentioned earlier here taking the subway #13 (red) north to Karlaplan (exit Valhallavägen if I remember correctly) or Gärdet and change to bus #1 there.

  10. Take Bus 1 from Frihamnen towards Stora Essingen.

Your departure from Frihamnen is at 08:51,

your arrival in Värtavägen is at 08:59.

At Karlaplan change to Bus 44 towards Skansen.

Your departure from Karlaplan is at 09:10.

You arrive in Nordiska museet/Vasamuseet at approx. 09:14.

The duration of your journey is 23 minutes.

    Have a nice journey!

    That is fine (I hope).

    .

Sounds ok to me. Just a little comment. I noticed the bus 44 circles Karlaplan so that both the NW going and the South going busses stop in front of the subway station so there are two bus 44 platforms next to each other. Be sure to take the correct one (it is clearly marked Skansen so it shouldnt be any problem)

Some one else mentioned that I might be able to catch the #1 bus in Gamla Stan and take that back to Frihamnen?? Is that so, and where??

Now with all this traveling on public transportation, what is my best bet for a card or something like that?? Do they have a travel pass that allows all this transportation for one price??

No, bus #1 goes through downtown but not through Old town.

    Stops:

    Cityterminalen

    Vasagatan

    Hötorget

    Norrlandsgatan

    Stureplan

    Linnégatan

    Humlegården

    Nybrogatan

    Jungfrugatan

    Värtavägen

    Storskärsgatan

    Kampementsbacken

    Gärdet

    Sandhamnsplan

    Rökubbsgatan

    Östhammarsgatan

    Sehlstedtsgatan

  11. The rentabike system (insert a coin and get it back when you return) is cheaper than Stockholm, which is probably why the bikes are vandalised and stolen so much. Don't rely on anything rideable being available.

I agree. The quality of the rentabike on the street bikes is horrible. Don't rely on them.
