  1.

Regarding Bus 76. How often does it run and at what time in the morning would be the first time it gets by Frihamnen port?

How often does the ferry run (the one that goes with the all day bus ticket) from Dej. to Gamla Stan?

    Again, thanks to all.

Bus 76 timetable with stop list at end of table.

  2. We're arriving on the Disney Magic on July 27th. We would like to go to Vasa Museum, Skansen, Gamla Stan (Kungliga Slottet-changing of the gaurds, Stortorget, )....How would you do it (please include transportaion). Sorry I don't know where we are docking.

I can start off by telling that Disney Magic is docking at Frihamnen 08.00-16:00 on July 27th according to Ports of Stockholm web page.

  3. Thanks for your offer of help.

If one takes the ferry from where the Vasa is and gets off in Gamla Stan,

how long (approximately) is the walk to The Palace?.

Some 625 yards walk northwards along the quay.

Hardly worth the effort but teoretically you could use bus 76 for one stop only and you would step off 140 yards from the Palace.

After reaching the Palace there is of course another 250 yards uphill to the gift shop / change of guard

  4.

Can anyone give Street Names for how you get from Ferry Dock to Palace?

    Skeppsbron :)

How about from Palace/Gamla Stan Street Names to get back to catch the #76

    Bus back to Frihamnen?

    Skeppsbron :)

I'm not joking. The ferry stop is at Skeppsbron as is the Palace and two bus #76 stops.

  5. Hi, Reading that you were on Bus 76 I'm hoping you might have answers for me regarding the stops. We will be in Gama Stan and will take Bus 76 back to our ship in Frihamnen. Can you tell me where to find the bus stop? Not sure where your ship docked, but having two different ports apart from each I should find out which direction Frihamnen is from Gama Stan....east/west or north/south. Do you remember what the cost was for the tickets. We would need two tickets for the bus but I think the one day ticket covers the ferry also.

Also, can you give a rough idea of how to get to the Palace in Gama Stan from the ferry boats? Is it a long walk? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Milwaukeeee, I think flower91882 was only planning the trip. :)

Anyway, I can answer those questions.

Frihamnen is about 2 miles northeast of Gamla Stan.

From the Djurgården ferry it is some 625 yards walk northwards along the quay to the Palace. You'll pass a #76 bus stop near the ferry and then another one just before reaching the Palace.

Single tickets cost 20 kronor per coupon in a ticket automat or 15 kronor per coupon, pre-paid. You need two coupons for each trip. Yes, the one day ticket covers the Djurgården ferry too and I recommended you buy it instead of messing around with costly coupons. ;)

  6. For the walk along the montliusvagen promenade, where are the places to go down to Soder Malarstrand? Can I get onto it by going from the intersection of Bastugatan and Timmermansgatan? Does Timmermansgatan run right into it? Thanks. Marlyne

No, its a steep. Looks like this seen from Söder Mälarstrand with Monteliusvagen on the top of the cliff.

  7. I understand there is a ferry that goes from Slussen to Skeppsholmen. It had one other stop. Could you point me to a website with schedule. I had been interested in the HOHO, but it doesn't pick up very early. I'd like to be on it between 830 and 9. If not we will do our Sodermalm tour first. Thanks. Marlyne

  8. I was reading in the DK Eyewitness guidebook for Stockholm. It says "Near Bastugatan an attractive promenade, Monteliusvagen, has been built along the rocks edge." I entered it in google maps and it could not find it. Can you tell me anything about it including how to instruct a taxi driver to take me there? We would like to get a picture taken higher than the water's edge on that side of Sodermalm. Thanks. Marlyne

Its not included on the Google map but if you turn to Google Satellite Picture Mode you can see it is there all right between Bastugatan and Torgil Knutssonsgatan, going in an inverted "U" all the way from Kattgränd to Skolgränd.

  9. How do I figure out the route to walk from Frihamnen to Vasa?

In harbour take first street to the left (Tullvaktsvägen).

At street corner take the street going to the right (still the same street name), past bus stop, past filling station, past rail road crossing exiting harbour area. (270 Yards)

Turn left onto Tegeluddsvägen (100 Yards)

Turn right onto Lindängsvägen. The road will go over an open field and then bend left ending up at a rotunda. (800 Yards)

Passing the rotunda continue in same direction (road renamed Oxenstiernsgatan) following it to the end. (650 Yards)

Turn right and follow Strandvägen in a left-right bend to the water and continue to the bridge. (400 yards)

Walk over the bridge (Djurgårdsbron) (150 Yards) and select first street to the right (Galärvarvsvägen) to the museum. (300 Yards)

  10. Question ~ I noticed on one of the maps a restaurant/café FAFNGAN. I can find only a little information on-line. Is it possible to continue walking along Folkungagatan and turn right (instead of going down to the ship) and reach the cafe? It’s hard to tell on the map if its walkable. Do you know anything about the café? Would it be possible to walk to the ship? Would cabs be available?

Fåfängan, pronounced approx. FOH-Fengan, meaning "The Vanity"

I have never been there but the web site says:

Fåfängan is located on a height with two ways up

One route is the stairs and starts at the London viaduct. You'll probably, select this way if you walk or use public transport. The second way is the Klockstapelsbacken (bell cage hill). There are parking spaces at the beginning of the road, the last bit up to the restaurant you walk.

  11. We arrive at 8:00a at Stadsgarden 167 and depart at 5:00p. Are we crazy to try to see the Vasa Museum, a bit of Skansen and Gamla Stan in that amount of time? I'm started to feel frenzied just thinking about it.

    Hi Julie

I'm from Finland myself but I have visited Stockholm many many times, often under similar time restrictions, and I have done similar to what you plan to do several times so your plans are not crazy at all if you just make up a simple time schedule for yourself and then keep an eye on the clock. I don't know how many you mean with "we" but the fewer you are, the easier it is to do it. Of course you have realize you cannot see every item exhibited on Vasa, not every house at Skansen nor investigate every alley at Gamla Stan but I would say you would be able to get quite a good feeling for all three places if you just are prepared to do a few shortcuts here and there.

For example: People on this group highly recommends the Vasa film and admittingly it is fashinating and puts you in correct mood to see the ship but watching a movie when you are under restricted time might be a bit frustrating. Watch this similar one on You Tube now instead, and save yourself 20 minutes on the museum:

Be prepered Skansen is both hilly and rather large. You really cannot do it in less than 1 1/2 hour.

    http://skansen.mediaprod.se/docs/Skansenkarta_highres.pdf

Assuming you arrive to Gamla Stan with the ferry from Skansen you could for example choose the following way: Södra Bankogränd, Järntorget, Västerlånggatan all the way to Storkyrkobrinken, Källargränd, Trångsund, Stortorget, and then round the Nobel Museum and the church to the Palace yard.

    http://maps.google.fi/maps?hl=sv&ie=UTF8&ll=59.322746,18.073647&spn=0.001191,0.004026&z=19

I'm afraid you'll not have time to see the inside of the palace but if you have some spare time left and have nothing against walking down/up long spiral steps you could consider having a fast visit to the Royal Treasury near the South gate. Its the museum that should take the least time (assuming it is not jammed with visitors)

I also want to add that I have visited the Vasa museum some ten times but I have never had any problems with any queues. Maybe I have just been lucky.

  12. One further clarification. I want to see La Mano on Katarinavagen. Does Bus 3 from City Hall travel along Katarinavagen to get to Tjarhorsplan?

If so, what stop do I get off to see La Mano.

Originally I was going to take metro to Slussen from city hall and then walk Katarinavagen to La Mano, but from the post I see that the bus is better than the metro. I just wanted to make sure that Bus 3 would get me there.

I do want to see the Art in the Metro that has been publicized. Which station do you think would be the best to get a taste of the Art in the Metro?

Bus 3 list of stops gives following:

    ...

    Stadshuset

    Tegelbacken

    Riddarhustorget

    Mälartorget

    Slussen

    Tjärhovsplan

    Åsögatan

    etc.

I think thats the complete list of stops but I'm not 100% sure.

A look at Google earth shows a bus stop named "Glasbruksgatan" quite near La Mano but it looks like bus #3 doesnt stop there.

Ironically Google maps Street View shows bus #3 pass the stop on its return trip but zooming in shows that the numbers at the stop have automatically been viped out by Google.

The reason for not recommending the subway was that you have to walk 400m west from City hall to entrance of station Rådhuset corner Hantverkargatan/Parmmätargatan, then another 200m to ticket hall, ride one stop with blue line to T-centralen. Find the 150m way through the tunnels to the red or green line and continuete with them to Slussen.

But if you plan to investigate the subway art anyway, it might be an option. The blue line has the superior art as has the new part of the red line (Stadion- Universitetet/Tekniska Högskolan). The combination Rådhuset-T Centralen - Kungsträdgården on the blue line might be an interesting option near the town center for you to check out.

  13. Thanks, Ultima. We're good walkers and I figure that's how you get to really see a city so maybe we'll opt for that. How long a walk (at a moderate pace) do you think it is? About an hour? It's hard to judge from the map.

0.85 miles from city hall to Slussen, 2 miles in total to the ship.

  14. I have another question about the walk from the pier dock to the blue bus stop 3. Why do you turn right on Erstgatan off of Folkungagatan instead of continuing on Folk.... to Renstiemas Gata? Then to Bus 3 stop at Tjarhovsplan.

    Thank you.

north-bound in a way already answered that by saying:

There is a small staircase up to Fjällgatan, one of the most charming streets we have in Stockholm. On one side there are very nice old houses and on the other a great view over Stockholm.

Folkungagatan is just another (boring) street but north-bound wants you to see how 19-century Stockholm looked like.

  15. From earlier posts I gather I can walk to Gamla Stan from the pier, but what about the return? Is the pier walkable from City Hall? If not, is the metro the best choice for public transportation?

Its possible to walk without problems over Vasabron bridge or over Helgeandsholmen island. Metro is too troublesome in this case but bus #3 would take you from the City Hall back at least to Slussen.

Question to people with knowledge of Södermalm. Is it worth taking bus #3 all the way to Tjärhovsplan and then try to find the way down the 100 feet cliff to the Stadsgården quay?

  16. What else must we see in Gamla Stan? Any suggestions as to where we should have lunch? I was interested in the Skansen Museum but think we may not be able to do justice to Gamla Stan if we try and squeeze that in as well. The Skansen is near the Vasa Museum, right?

Apart from the Place the main sights at Gamla Stan are Storkyrkan, Stortorget, Västerlånggatan.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stortorget

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A4sterl%C3%A5nggatan

Taking the shortest way (turning right when exiting Vasa and following the small boat harbour to Alkärret road and then up to Djurgårdsvägen road) it is half a mile between Vasa museum doors and Skansen main gate.

  17. acjb,

I see that there will be a Royal Wedding in June and the Royal Palace will be closed. Do you know if the Changing of the Guards will take place daily as scheduled, or suspended until the wedding is over?

When is the wedding date? Our ship is in Stockholm on June 13, and I am wondering if it is before or after the wedding. I am hoping the wedding will be over and the Royal Palace will be open for tours.

Wedding at 19 June. No changing of guard between 17-20 June.

Palace closed for tours 7-30 June.

  18. Al or Ultima,

Do you have a general idea of how long it should take, via taxi, to get from the Ice Bar to Frihamnen? We are thinking about making reservations for the 1500-1545 "tour" but have to be back on the ship by 1630. I don't know if 45 minutes is enough time to get back to the ship. We'll be there on a Wednesday.

I haven't used a Stockholm taxi for many a year but looking at the bus timetables some 25-30 minutes is reserved for bus #1 for that route including stops and some extra detours so a taxi would surely be able to do the route much faster than that during normal circumstances.

  19. Are any of the gates or walls from the 1500's still around? Marlyne

The rather small town walls were pulled down in the early 17 century when the city was expanding. Only a few bits remain in the Middle Age Museum.

    http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil:Stockholms_stadsmur_2010.jpg

But the Riddarholmskyrkan & Storkyrkan churches, the Palace cellar (=Tre Kronor Museum) and some of the buildings in old town are real old.

  20. Is it possible to walk from the Vasa Museum to the Ice Bar? I was looking at the map link someone posted earlier and I just can't tell if there are pedestrian pathways the whole way. (Google indicates it's fairly short - 2.7km - but, you know)

If not, what's the EASIEST way to get from the Vasa Museum back in that direction? Would it be the ferry (then walking)?

Apart from a few exceptions (like some highway bridges and tunnels and industrial areas) there should be pedestrian pathways almost everyhere in the centers of the nordic capitals. The route you mention is a very nice one along the water and then through the commercial center of Stockholm. Not a slightest problem apart from the fact it is a bit time consuming.

The ideal thing for you would be bus #47 that takes you straight from Vasa to the Central Station and the ice bar is just a few blocks away from the latter.

If I was in your situation and noticed I had just missed bus 47 I would consider taking bus #44 to Karlaplan and then take the subway to T-Centralen and use the exit to the Central Station but then of course I know Stockholm quite well.
