I suppose terms and conditions can get the cruise line out of pretty much anything but anytime I've heard of a story where a cruise line sponsored excursion has had delays to the point where passengers missed the ship then the cruise line covered the expenses to get passengers back to the ship at the next port or to the debark port depending on the itinerary.

Remember that this was NOT an NCL sponsored shore excursion.

Please keep us informed as to whether the passengers were able to reboard the ship at the next port.

Will still be a couple of days before they reach Dakar, Senegal, since they are not going to Gambia tomorrow.

As I understand it, the ship was out in the bay and they were using the lifeboats as tenders.  The lifeboats had been brought on board and stored.  The boarding platform and ladder had been secured.  The only way to have boarded at point would have been through the hatch like a Harbor Pilot jumping from the ship to the Pilot boat.  Much Much to dangerous for passengers to try.  Imagine the screams if someone had fallen into the ocean and died because they could NOT make the jump.

  3. I saw a posting after I wrote this one to say that Gunner had retired.

There have been a couple other Father and son(s) working for NCL.  At one time, Lars Bengtsson and all three of his sons were with NCL.  Captain Zeljko Jurac has a son currently a Bridge Officer on The Breakaway.

Is Captian Hakan Svedung still master of the Dawn?  If so, I would say there's definitely more to the story than is being reported; those types of decisions aren't arbitrary.  Either way, it's certainly not the cruise line's fault.  It's pretty clear when the departure times are; if they are "veteran cruisers," they should know that.  I think that there is obviously more to this story.

What does Captain Svedung or the Gem have to do with this situation on the Dawn?

Last I knew (several months ago), Captain Svedung was on the Joy.

Since it is a US Military installation, I wonder if a valid US Military ID would have sufficed?!

None the less, I imagine that paying close attention to "requirements" prior to disembarking in Key West is absolutely essential!

A valid US Military ID should work.  I never go anywhere without my Military ID.

So, If I am on a closed loop cruise visiting Key West, which only requires Birth certificate and Phot ID, your telling me that if as an American Citizen, they will not let me back on board. I worked onboard cruise ships for years and have docked in the navy yard, you absolutely do not need a passport to go ashore and return to the ship. All the cruises i have been on and also worked on, I have never taken my passport ashore, it stays in my safe from the minute i get to my cabin.

Wonder if they would have a separate gate for crew and all you would need is your Crew Member ID??

  7. Two suggestions:

     (1) Book as soon as possible and book the exact cabin you want.  If you receive an invitation to bid and they bid is accepted, it may be a cabin or location that you want. You do not have a say.

    (2) Call your NCL Mastercard and ask what they might be able to do for you.  They might be able to help get you a really good deal.

The Sun does not have a Solo Lounge.  Your Freestyle Daily will tell you where the Solos will be meeting each evening.

Enjoy your cruise and the Sun in particular.  She is a small wonderful ship.

Traveling on the Jade next month and trying to find out where the boat docks.  Is it a tender stop?  Thanks!

Look at your Guest Confirmation information, it will tell you if any of your particular ports of call will require tendering.

Enjoy Key West-- so much history is there including The Harry Truman Winter White House.  There is also a wonderful aquarium and a Pirate Museum (real pirates not movie ones).

I'd like to suggest you move forward with the passport renewal (if possible). You're right - you might not get it back in time, but you'll have it for the next trip. There is a decent chance you'll get it back before the trip. I've been seeing passport renewals come back in 3 - 4 weeks recently. It doesn't hurt and would make your trip easier if you do have the passport.

But, if you're ok traveling without, then happy travels and I hope you have a wonderful time. Also...OMGOSH Is it seriously less than a month until Alaska cruise season? Where the heck did winter go?!?!?!

  10. Hi Sweetie,

Glad you met Myo Ko.  He is a sweet kid.

The Mega is directly across the street in Cozumel.  It is bright blue with HUGE Lettering.  No way you can miss it.

Very chilly here again.  The temperatures for Sunrise Easter Service will be about 34 F at 6:30 A.M.

    BIG BIG BIG BIG HUG

    Love and prayers always

  11. When you are doing B2B cruises, you will receive a letter from Guest Services giving exact instructions for your 2nd cruise.  The letter will tell you how to get new cards and any  other instructions you will need including how to get your new key cards.

Since you are staying in the same cabin, you do not need to pack.

    Enjoy your cruises

  12. Too soon to know exactly what would be available on your cruise.

By then some of the new shows being worked on in Tampa may be ready to go on board the ships.  Have not seen anything yet with dates or exactly what is being planned.  Last time I heard anything, it sounded like they were going back to in-house production shows like when Jean Ann Ryan productions were on board.

I would not book a suite if traveling companions are not also booked there.  You would be giving up many of the suite perks you’re paying for, to spend time with friends/family.

What ship are you on?  Surprised you thought the Prima, with its Haven restaurant and bars, etc., was meh.  But if you’re booking on a Gem-class or older ship without these Haven facilities, you could still enjoy breakfast & lunch at your private venues and meet up for dinner with the other 2 couples.

It is possible to invite non-Haven guests to the Haven for dinner, maybe once, if the Concierge agrees, but you would be charged a steep fee for each guest.  They can also visit you in your cabin, but would not be allowed in other Haven spaces.

The only thing you might be able to do with them, related to Haven privileges, is to join you in Haven for an early disembark if you are all booked on the same excursion.  The Concierge would have to allow it.  A Roll Call couple, not in the Haven,  shared an excursion with us that had an early meeting time.  They were allowed to join us in the Haven, so we could be together in the staff elevator to be escorted off the ship.

They mentioned POA (Pride of America) which would be a Hawaiian island cruise.  If the Pride has Haven cabins, I do not think there is a restaurant.  She might have a very small bar probably open very limited hours.

  14. Hi,

I hope your 2nd week goes well for you.

If you see Charlin again, tell her, I am doing well and ask her when her sign-off date is.  Would love to sail with her again.

If you ever eat in the Manhattan Dining Room for dinner of O'Sheehan's  for breakfast one of my cruise kids may be there.  Myo Ko from Myanmar (Burma).

Have you heard the news coming from the Hal Nieuw Amsterdam?  Two crew members were killed in an accident in the "engineering space".  There are at least 2 former NCL Senior staff members currently on board the Nieuw Amsterdam.

    BIG BIG BIG BIG HUG

    Love and prayers always
