  1. I appreciate all the feedback and comments. Its starting to sound like a totally different type of river cruise, That is, sailing all day, instead of morning tours, followed with a little free time. I can live with that, but my wife does enjoy small villages and a few. shops. So, after stopping at one winery, and one castle, will we disappointed. We are not trail hikers either. Are there night shore actvities.Long bus rides are a no-no. Can anyone proved a time frame for a typical day. We do like Uniworld, though we know no different, and contrary to a lot of cruisers, we like the the over the top decor, if for only a week. We like the plush heavy decor as opposed to the Ikiea, Scandinavian , simplicity style. So we are looking at the Porto to Porto itinerary.
  2. We have sailed with Uniworld on the Castles on the Rhine and Danube Holiday Markets. We enjoyed both cruises, though both for different reasons. However, neither cruise wowed us with the river scenery or towns, though the Rhine Gorge was delightful. Looking forward to another cruise, and would like to know what are your experiences and recommendation for a future cruise based on scenery and towns. Museums, vineyards, cathedrals or major attractions are not a priority., just pure river beauty and quaintness of towns is what we are looking towards. We will appreciate all opinions and suggestions from your points of view.
  3. Thinking about a Douro cruise with Uniworld, sometime in 2024. Having done the Rhine and Danube, I am asking for comments and/or comparisons regarding your experiences . Please tell me recommendations or concerns that might be helpful in selecting a cruise line, season and experiences that will be appreciated.
  4. Not sure what you mean by needing boots. Would they be for snow, rain or warmth. Based on our Christmas Market cruise, there was no snow in early Dec., only a little wet at times and rather mild temperatures. So needing boots is weather depended. Now if you only knew the weather for your dates, you would know the answer.
  5. Since it will get dark rather early, there should be opportunities to see the some markets at night with their vibrant lights and atmosphere. You did not mention which river you will be sailing. I can only say that when we did the Danube Markets, there were several opportunities to do the markets at night. Of course, as mentioned previously, the mooring location plays a significant role in opportunities. You may need to miss a port review before dinner, but worth the experience.
  6. I am not sure about all Uniworld ships , but in 2017 on the MT, the "gift shop" , not noted on deck planswas merely a glass display case built into the wall on the aquarium deck.. Though minimal, it was easily to spend(waste) our credits on a few items. There was a "Progressive Dinner" that was offered which we also purchased. My recommendation is to immediatedly leave the cruise director presentation when over and immediately go sign up for anything that may interest you. In our case, the dinner which was great and showed behind the scenes on the ship, was limited to 10 persons and only on offered on one evening.
  7. Regarding the upgrade bid, I was successful in bidding the minimum and got a French balcony for less than $325 pp. Now I wonder what value I will be offered if the cruise is cancelled. Original cabin type or bid cabin.
  8. I did not receive my Cruise Companion, and I did not see this clause in the Terms and Conditions of Uniworld. Did I miss it. And to me, "recommended means optional", so not mandatory. As a Heritage Member I received a bid offer, but so did traveling companions who are not members.
  9. So many things to consider. For an example , I did a side by side comparison of Viking and Uniworld, making an adjustment for drinks (2 per person, per day), the total difference was just under $250, in favor of Viking. Considerations included a balcony cabin, same date and ports, transfers, beverages, gratuities, laundry, etc. Cabins are larger on Uniworld, with a smaller ship occupancy, and with final payments due 120 days before. Decor on each ship are completely opposite. So, if you like an all inclusive, with all beverages, choose and you will make up the difference in a couple of days. In my opinion, all lines are great. Its just a matter of prioritizing your wants and needs before choosing the line that fits with your budget.
  10. Well, hopefully it does not come to fruition, but right now he Rhine is iffy at best,. There does appears to be a few other cruises with Uniworld with cabin availability that depart somewhere in France on the same date. Of course thing can change, but I am not sure people are running to book cruises at this time. We would have to whatever departure city on our own since we booked air ourselves. Our cruise was at a really great rate and at this time, we would not be interested in having to add a few thousand dollars. We would be glad to swap even up.
  11. When a cruise line cancels a cruise, in our case Uniworld, would they offer another cruise on the same date as a no cost exchange. Specifically, if Uniworld were to cancel our cruise 2 days prior to sail date, would they offer a no cost swap to a different ship and river for the same date. Say the Rhine for the Seine, same cabin level and do they offer travel compensation if applicable.
  12. Not to be negative, but I am starting to get concerned regarding our Rhine A to B cruise on October 30th. Of course there are 60 days still left for things to stablixe or even get better (or worst). I was wondering ig Uniworld has the ability to switch ships. Much of what I read regarding ship swapping is with other lines, and no mention of Uniworld. So, is it possible that they do swap if required?
  13. We only completed a Danube Christmas cruise, which we enjoyed. I would chose the cruise with the ports that interest you most. The markets are fun and each with have their own flavor, but the cities themselves were most important to us. We loved the markets in Vienna and Salzburg , but the atmosphere of any market, especially after dark, with their lights and aromas, provided the best memories. Next up is the Rhine.
  14. In doing a side by side comparison of Viking and Uniworld, making an adjustment for drinks (2 per person, per day), the total difference was just under $250, in favor of Viking. 15. We did a Danube Christmas. Different Ports of course, but our weather was a lot of overcast, drizzle rain light snow, full sun and umbrella required rain. So, a little of everything. Temperatures were 35-45F. Wore winter coats. Maybe a little overkill depending on your tolerance. No boots, but water proof Timberland shoes. Gloves, earmuffs, scarfs. water repellant hat of hood. Long underware and hand warmers.Costco or Amazon is a cheap source for stuff you only need occationally. We did not buy anything special, but we did use, at one time or another, all that we brought. Ship provided umbrella used one morning. Cold breeze
  16. Interesting in that when I did a side by side comparison of Viking and Uniworld, making an adjustment for drinks (2 per per son per day) it was just under $250, in favor of Viking. Considerations were for a balcony cabin, same date and ports, transfers, gratuities, laundry, etc. Cabins are larger with smaller total occupancy and final payment 120 days on Uniworld. Now I am not trying to highjack this topic, but found it interesting and worth sharing. Both lines are great.
  17. Regarding the canal cruise, which tour company did you use. Our flight time just got changed and our window of opportunity for a canal tour just got much tighter, if not impossible. We arrive 10:40 and need to be aboard Uniworld by 3:00, so only something close to the dock(Central Station) may be possible.Thank you in advance
  18. We selected Uniworld for our Rhine river cruise and received a $300 OBC. We were not able to get the the price reduced any further using this credit from the our agency, and was wondering how we may use the credit since it is mainly an "all-inclusive" line. Can this OBC be used for bidding on a cabin upgrade, or are there purchases or special dinners that can be purchased? Premium liquors or spa treatment are nice, but we would rather use the credits on things that would not seemed forced just to use the credits.
  19. Do they still make walkie talkies or fanny packs. I mean really, get with the program.
  20. Why would you ask if this is crazy? Or do you really mean " how to do it?".
  21. Last week Captain Leo said the ship was only three-tenths a mile away. The excursion boat was about 50 yards closer. The weather was perfect.
  22. Always be a head of the crowd. Walk on and off with your luggage.
  23. We booked it privately through Coastal Helicopters last week 10/14/22. $660.00 They do not book with cruise ships. We did the extended excursion which included the helicopter to the dog camp along with the sledding, then onto the next stop for a walk on the glacier. Weathe was luckily great. I balked at the price initially, but the experience was exhilarating. Best excursion ever. Beg, borrow or steal the money if you get a reservation.
