I live in Wisconsin and we have a statewide database for immunizations. Our doctor, or health department can access that data on our behalf and send proof of vaccination. We have done this through our travel doctor in the past.

Interesting.  I googled and I guess California has the same.  Not sure if my doctor has access...I would hope so but I am under the impression they keep their own records which don't necessarily mirror our pharmacy either.   Thanks for the info.

Whether or not one chooses to get the vaccination is a personal decision.  Both sides need to respect each other’s decision, even if they would decide otherwise.

What we need from HAL on this issue is a clear policy on whether or not a vaccination is required to sail.  This announcement should be made prior to any final payment date so that we can make an informed decision on cruising.

As much as I would love clear policies, I think the cruise lines are pretty much clueless how everything is going to play out.  Even Qantas who announced they will require proof of vaccination isn't quite sure when that will take effect or how.

I'm in the same "boat".  When is your cruise? I have a cruise planned in August but who knows if I can get vaccinated by then or what "proof" will be required and how hard that will be to get. Final payment is May- hopefully it will all be more clear by then- IF it even happens.

  3. I thought that 95% efficacy meant that each individual had a 95% chance of being protected against getting COVID after vaccination kicks in.  I get a "medpage" each day - which is enlightening.  What I read today is that the 5% represents people who would not be protected at all.  Can someone confirm, deny or clarify? Not that it really matters but....

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are thought to be 95% effective. That’s impressive and way more effective than experts predicted, but it also means 5% of people who receive these vaccines won’t become immune. That may seem like a small number, but in a population as big as ours, that’s still a significant number of people.“That still means hundreds of thousands, depending on what [population] scale you’re looking at, could receive the vaccine and not be protected,” Ogbuagu said.

  4. I heard today that vaccines were being delivered to our local military hospital.  It dawned on me that I have never seen active duty military mentioned in any vaccine phase, anywhere.  I am sure they are getting it, and I am sure it is somewhat privileged information, but am just wondering how their vaccine numbers and projected distributions figure into all of this.

This really shows how lucky we are to have both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines right now

And it looks like although we may not be able to order more Pfizer before June, it appears Moderna is eligible for immediate re-order, at least as far as I can tell.  Also, J&J data may be out end of Jan or early Feb. Breathe....

It turns out I never had the mumps or  mumps vaccine as it was not developed in the 60/70's as part of the MMR.  It is recommended for international travel, so I eventually will get one of those as well.

Yes, do it! There are phase 3 trials and some interesting positive research regarding COVID and the MMR vaccine (just google).  Not sure if we had one as children so we both got one in the last few months.

A seven night cruise is seven nights. They usually run from Saturday to Saturday. That means Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,  Thursday, and Friday night are spent on the ship, that's seven nights.

Yes.  A seven night cruise is seven nights.  It is also 8 days..Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.  You are ON the ship- even just a portion for 8 days and CDC says :

    • Cruises longer than 7 days are not allowed. This length may change depending on the status of the pandemic

Explained: What Cruise Lines Must Do to Sail Again (According to the CDC Framework) | Cruzely.com

Hope not, but be prepared.... Many people on other boards are saying their cruises have been shortened to 6 nights and prorated.

  8. We are booked for Alaska 7 nights in August.  It was clearly pointed out on another board that the CDC isn't allowing anything more than 7 DAYS if it includes an American port.  This means 6 nights (you can look it up).  I called both my TA and Celebrity and both were clueless and basically said maybe it might be canceled or maybe it might be shortened.  Absolutely no help.

Management for Celebrity is less than upfront.  I am disappointed.

Instead they chose to spread the purchases over several companies in case one or more did not work out.

Once the EUAis approved I expect them to lock in a substantial amount of their production.

I don't know about spreading it out.  If you look at the purchase chart, 500M purchased from AZ and only 100M from everyone else (Pfizer, Moderna, J and J, Sanofi, Novovax).  That means at least 50% of what we purchased is from AZ- which most now think will be very delayed in authorization (if at all)

I don't know how they are going to lock in more doses, at least with Pfizer who has already said upcoming production is already reserved for countries who purchased.  All estimates on receipt of more vaccines from Pfizer would be next June for the United States.

It is what it is, nothing to do but move forward.  Hopefully we can secure more doses of Moderna and J and J if it proves to be a good choice and still start to recover by summer. I don't think Novovax nor Sanofi have even started phase 3 yet.

the more I read about the AZ vaccine, the less I like about their reported results. They appear to be using a meta analysis from a number of different trials with different protocols. An approach that can be prone to cherry picking the data. I doubt the FDA would approve an EUA if that is what they are doing.

Fortunately there are a number of late stage adenovector approaches including J&J running huge trials that will really help determine if this technology will work.  I was always a bit concerned that AZ/Oxford is using a chimpanzee version and all the others are human adeno vectors.  It is more likely to get immune modulation of the chimp version when put into people.

Both nocl and TeeRick seemed to have some resevations about AstraZeneca.  I would appreciate clarification and any updates on your thoughts.

    Thanks.

  11. I totally understand that there are many people who will and should get the vaccine before me.  I would be THRILLED to get my vaccine in March or April, even May!  But my understanding is that all of these estimates are/were based on our option to purchase more than our original order (no?) which looks like it isn't happening. At least for Pfizer, they are saying additional orders wouldn't be available for the US until June.  Like I said above, is that probable for Moderna as well?

Also, my concern about AstraZeneca is based on something I read from one of the medical professionals on this site.  I will try to find it.

As always thanks for everyone's expertise.

  12. I also read about the US not purchasing more doses of Pfizer when we had the chance- damn shame that is for sure.  I can see the same happening with Moderna as we only purchased 100 million of those as well.  Looks like most of us will be getting AstraZeneca IF it is effective.  Not sure I like the chimpanzee thing but my thoughts aren't based in science.  Just seems a bit wiggy.

How Many Covid-19 Vaccine Doses Has The U.S. Secured?

55+ accounts for over 90% of deaths.

Unfortunately, there are many people (me and DH) who are going to be caught in that 55-64 group who are "healthy" and therefore wont have vaccine option until the very last phase in our state. Retired a few years early, not in working force so definitely last. Our health official states widely available in April.  I think that is a bit optimistic but I'd be thrilled.

If we can get our two vaccine injections at the latest June 1 and July 1 we will be good to go by Aug 1.  Our cruise is Aug 26th

We are in almost exact situation.  Aug 28th, depart from and return to Barcelona.

I canceled May cruise to Norway but have another to Alaska mid August.  One thing I wonder is what with the vast amount of vaccines given, how quickly can proof of vaccination be processed to show through whatever system is needed.  I am not talking about a card from the pharmacy, but rather uploaded through whatever agency will end up doing this task. I assume cruise lines and flights will require some special registration, not just a pharmacy card.  Could be sweating this out last minute.

I'm so surprised by this. We're in the Astra Zeneca trial and they said we could be 'un-blinded' at our request.  It's in the actual agreement you sign to participate.  My impression was this is standard for any vaccine trial.   We can also leave the trial at any time within the two years, plus if the vaccine is approved and available and we got the placebo, they will offer the real vaccine to us.  Again, this is standard language in a trial.

Don't know....this is what was in the email:

Study participation is always voluntary so you’d be able to leave the Janssen study at any time, including to pursue a different vaccine that’s on the market. However, for whatever reason Janssen has not explicitly stated that study participants will be unblinded if they leave the study early for any reason.

When I am invited to be vaccinated I need to call the study team and they will drop me from study and advise whether I had placebo or vaccine.

That is awesome! Johnson and Johnson said they would not un-blind us in such an event.  That is why we passed.  I just read a couple of days ago that Novavaxx was on pause in the US.  Glad it is back on- good luck and let us know how you feel through out your trial.

Some states like CA, WA, OR, NV and NY have governors that said they would set up their own "mini-FDA review" so not sure of the time line for them to review and approve a vaccine

Here in California we are being told that the first 2 phases of each vaccine are already being reviewed and they promise the balance of review will take no more than 2 days to rubber stamp after FDA approval. 😏

Wilma Wooten (our Health Service officer in San Diego) mentioned we had one deep freezer in the county for the Pfizer vaccine, and have purchased another. Many of use were surprised that we don't have a plethora of them here since we have a large biotech industry.  This points out how far and few there may actually be out there....
