Good morning to all our CC friends , hope you all had a very nice Christmas ours was very quiet and peaceful but we are now waiting for our DD’s family to come for a few days from Rye , New York , we have not been able to hug them all for a long time .We have been to Qingdao while on the Volendam in 2017 and had a very exciting day which started off early in the morning with a visit to the Tsingtao Beer Brewery for a tour and a tasting . The brewery had been started by a German company in 1903 so the beer was very good and tasted close to our very good Heineken Beer. A number of years ago it was taken over by the Chinese .This was before 10 am ……….Even the manhole covers advertise the breweryWe than went into the old town of Qingdao to go through some of the old merchant homes also of German heritage to see the history of Old QingdaoFrom the “old Town “ we saw in the distance the New Chinese skyscrapersAfter a very nice lunch we went to the coast to visit a beautiful old pierAt low tide all kinds of people were looking for some edible morselsDW had to try out one of the rental bicycles ………..Lots and lots of offices and high-rise apartmentsTime to go back “Home” after a very nice day with our small group the captain will be waiting for usTony 🎅🤶Just in case we are very busy here with our family we would like to wish you all Good Fortune and Good Health for the New Year and of coarse one or more cruises on a BHB ! Happy New Year !!

"Bitterballen" are very similar to "Kroketten" as far as making them from scratch. It's been my experience that both are made on board by the sous-chefs and asst. chefs on a regular basis for gatherings, crew lunches in the "Dirty Mess," along with "frikandellen" and other Dutch delicacies with the caveat that all this was "pre-Covid"
https://www.thespruceeats.com/beef-bitterballen-recipe-1129015
Hope you don’t mind me showing some of our experiences in the Grand Dutch Cafe John , I believe the croquettes , bitterballen and maybe also the frikandellen are from the Best and most Famous maker in Amsterdam , Van Dobben , I don’t think they are made on board ship . I thought I had heard that from one of the servers in the Grand Dutch Cafe. When we are on one of the Pinnacle Class ships we usually spend quite a bit of time there and of coarse have to try all the Dutch goodies . Uitsmijters , Appel Taart , Flammetjes , Dutch Pea soup etc etcAnd , this is the way to eat a herring the Dutch wayDW forgot to roll it through the unions .....This was the wonderful Grand Dutch Cafe team on the Koningsdam in 2019 and due to the Covid they might have moved on to positions in the better hotels or restaurants in The Netherlands or BelgiumWe wish you a fantastic cruise John and Maria , and don't forget after one of those Bossche Bollen you have to climb on the bike again .........Tony 🎅-

Merry Christmas and peace to all and thanks for the bon voyages! Got our Covid results electronically sent overnight and, as expected, they were negatory on both 🧐, so we will be good to go to tomorrow enroute to the city of the Padres and K-dam. Looking very much forward to it and a "broodje kroket" for lunch in the Grand Dutch Cafe 😊

We are hoping to cruise on the Koningsdam and get on board on the 2nd of February but probably the latest test we can get in Canada before we fly out is a little more than 2 days prior to embarkation . I tried looking for testing in San Diego at local Pharmacies but it is either very far from our hotel or impossible to prebook specially as a Canadian .Can anybody tell me that we can possibly book at the terminal before we get on board . I thought that HAL does not do that anymore in February.Thank you for any help with this , much appreciatedTony

We did not get an email from HAL after we returned from our 24 days on the Eurodam in October .
Maybe I should have purchased more FCD's

Great to hear from you John @Copper10-8, we have missed you posting on CC and glad to hear that you are doing well and cruising again .We wish you a wonderful cruise even if at first it will feel so different when you get on board during this difficult time , but than like we found out in October on the Eurodam in the Mediterranean it still is so wonderful to cruise again and now we hope that we can get on the Koningsdam in February for a cruise to Hawaii .We look forward to your commentaries and your experiences , Merry Christmas , Stay Safe and Enjoy !Tony 😁

" " We've been to Haifa twice, both times on the Prinsendam. The first time I was recovering from noro and under quarantine, so didn't go ashore, but then I did go ashore in 2016 - I imagine @sailingdutchy will post some pictures. It was a very interesting day. Five years ago seems like a lifetime now! " "
I was just ahead of you Ann @VictOriann I see but forgot to ask your permission for showing a few personal pictures , hope I did OK . And YES is was a wonderful day but a lot of walking !

Correct Tony. I noticed immediately it was the same date we were there. And I know Jacqui and Jose were on the ship for the first of our B2B cruises. We always had a great time on the Prinsendam. It was a warm and cozy ship, wasn't it? Many happy memories aboard that vessel.
Yes we had the pleasure to cruise twice on the Prinsendam and they were both wonderful , we were able to see so many ports that are not possible to visit anymore with the larger ships and the crews were always the best !

Thanks to all for the great photos today of your time spent in the port of Falmouth, or the surrounding countryside. Just beautiful!
@StLouisCruisers Looking at the date you showed on your post with all the pictures it just clicked that we were on the same cruise on the Prinsendam in 2019 and it is very sad that they are not able to post at this time but also Jackie and Jose were on this cruise at least from April 12th until Dover on May6th and we had a few tours together , than we stayed on until Amsterdam on May 20th .

Good morning / afternoon all and Happy Sunday , thank you very much to Rich and Roy for keeping this Daily going and for all the contributors , it keeps our bond strong with all our cruise friends we think of often .Yesterday I was struggling with my posts of Kaohsiung and our story of the storied Westerdam cruise , my post finally came up after asking help from CC plus I have added a few more pictures about the Westerdam story if you are interested in those .Today another nice memory to look at , Cape Horn or in Dutch Kaap Hoorn named after the city in the Netherlands of Hoorn for the birthplace of navigator Willem Corneliszoon Schouten who rounded the Cape in 1616 .Forward to 2015 while on our Antarctica cruise on the Zaandam on Feb 7th , 2015 our Captain PJ van Maurik went through the Drake Passage and circled Cabo de Hornos .We had very fine weather doing all of this so I can show a few pictures , but you can see that the winds can be very strong here from the damaged monument that had partially been blown over .From the screen in the crows nestChilean coastguardAnd a gorgeous sky before while starting the crossing to AntarcticaTony 😄

Kind of late, but I can add a little to what Tony said. We joined the Westerdam in Hong Kong and weren't allowed to go to our first scheduled port, Manila. So we turned around and headed to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It was supposed to be a two day stop (probably because of the non-stop in the Philippines). However, after one day we were told to leave. We headed towards Bangkok, Thailand, where we were told to make flight arrangements and disembark. As we got close to the port, a Thai Navy destroyer came out and rudely escorted us away from their country. At that point we didn't know where the ship would or could go. Some thought Guam, being a U.S. port would take us. But we ended up at Cambodia, where we were warmly greeted. Each of us was gifted a nice scarf by Cambodia's ruler and we all eventually flew home from there.
I know I took pictures of the giant Buddha we visited outside of Kaohsiung, but they have somehow disappeared.
Ray
Thank you @USN59-79 yes there is much more to this unforgettable story with a very happy ending .Here a couple more pictures of the mood on board ship and of our friends and also DW with the Cambodian scarfs. There were representatives of the American the Dutch and Canadian Embassies on board ship and also in the airport of Phnom Penh .We also were quickly tested before we left the ship by Cambodian doctors and nursesSome people were taken by bus to the Sihanoukville airport while others later on had to travel by bus all the way to Phnom PenhWe were allowed to leave on the second day in Sihanoukville while others would have to wait another 3 or 4 more daysTony😃😃-

Sorry @ger_77 I tried a couple more times but it did not work today I don't think the gremlins were at fault today , it was me that pushed a wrong button somewhere in my original set up to get text and photos together .
My Post was about Kaohsiung being the last port on the Westerdam in 2020 before we were stuck at sea for more than a week and there was quite a bit of typing involved to explain what had happened .
Somewhere it is hidden in post # 68 and # 80
Next time better
Tony 🙃

We have been to Kaohsiung , Taiwan twice . I will post a few pictures of the memorable last time we were there while on the Westerdam on Feb 4th , 2020 .Yes THAT cruise ! We arrived a day early in Kaohsiung because of a supposed virus going around and Manila did not allow us to come in . So when we arrived in Taiwan we thought to just have an easy day and go by local bus into town to a large shopping mall and have a nice lunch and than the next day I would go with my group see the hi lights of Kaohsiung ………All the decorations from the Holidays and also the Chinese New Year were still upFor this restaurant you have to shop first for the items you would like to cook in thebroth or on the fire at your table , it looked very adventurousWe were invited in .....But we decided to go to this “ Choose and Point “ menu restaurantWelcome to 2020 ……........????? The year of the Rat !!!The next morning we got up early to do our tour , I had hired a small bus for 16 of us with one of the best guides in Kaohsiung and we had planned to go to the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center .I looked out the window and noticed that it was very, very quiet outside , I looked further and saw that the Port was closed and completely sealed off and the gangway was being pulled in . You might have heard what happened for the next 8 or 9 days the Captain was taking us every which direction to find a place where we could go ashore , at one point we even had the Thai Navy shadowing us when we were going the direction of a port in ThailandThan all of a sudden our Captain made a 180 degree turn and we heard one of our last chances was to go to Cambodia .Making a long story short , in Cambodia we were welcomed by the President himself who had arrived by helicopter with Press from all over the world present , and from there we disembarked in small groups and on our way home over the next few daysWe have nothing but praise for what Holland America have done for all of us in this situation , in the end nobody had the virus , the crew was fantastic on board we even had a large farewell meeting . The BBC , The New York Post and the Dutch Telegraaf all did their stories and we even made the Front Page in a couple of them .Yes there was much relief and I saw tears from crew and guestsFlowers for the Captain and crew from the CambodiansWe had heard that everybody was very worried about us and so were the Press reports , but we had a wonderful and very memorable cruise the one we will not easily forgetTony ( I am there in the center of the picture in Phnom Penh , Cambodia talking to HAL staff for what our options going home are )
