Iceland tours

The Celebrity excursions are quite expensive. Any recommendations for tour guides/companies in Iceland? We'll be there for 2 days in early May 2018.

Private tours by Iceland companies are very expensive as well. We disembarked in Reykjavik and stayed for four days two years ago. We easily spent several hundred dollars for two for each private tour. The distances are long and gas is expensive are two reasons for the big dollars. In addition, there are not a huge number of tour companies so you are competing with the cruise ships. Having said that, i don’t regret one dollar that we spent. What a magnificent country!

Everything in Iceland is expensive....which is partially due to the collapse of their currency several years ago (due to banking fraud). So what to do? Certainly shop around for some decent local tour options and you might save a few dollars. One of our favorite options is to simply rent a car (especially in Reykjavik) where many ships do overnights. We prefer to rent for the first day and usually return the car late that same day or early the following morning so we only pay for a single day. Rental car rates are pretty expensive, but a more reasonable option when compared to many tours. One can drive the Golden Circle at their own pace...with the knowledge that they will have no problem missing the ship. And if one wants to go to the Blue Lagoon, you can keep the car and head out to that place in the evening (some go after dinner) using your car (which saves significant money over the tour).

In other ports it becomes a real challenge (although you can arrange for a rental car in at least one other port). But there are sometimes local options which can save money. On our 2nd day we will sometimes take the local bus into Reykjavik to just walk around the town. On our last visit we took a several hour whale watching boat tour (on the 2nd day) and found it somewhat disappointing since the only whales we saw were Minke Whales...which are among the most boring whales to see in the wild. But that is the risk with any whale watching tour (we had hoped to spot a Sperm Whale or some Killer Whales (which are not actually whales).

Planning this cruise on celebrity during May of 2019. Please let me know how your trip goes and any inside info you discover. Can I see the excursions they’ll be offering? Are they published anywhere?
