Question on cancelling cruise

My husband has hurt his back and we may need to cancel our cruise less than a week before leaving. We have CSA insurance. Wonder what doctor has to say in the note in order for us to get refund.

We certainly hope your DH has a quick recovery. As to what CSA will require to pay a claim, your best approach is to ask CSA! But they will likely explain that your physician needs to complete Section 4 (Physician's Statement) of the CSA Claim Form. One of the questions on that form :

("Please provide details explaining the patient’s diagnosis. If you advised the patient that the trip should be cancelled or interrupted due to this medical condition, please explain the basis for your travel recommendation. If this is due to an injury, please give details of the injury. ") seems to be self explanatory.

We recently filed a medical injury claim with another insurance company and our physician was actually eager to help with the paperwork....even writing a supplemental letter providing more info then was contained in the claim form. I can tell you (having spent over 30 years in the medical insurance industry) that much of the decision on your claim will be based on your physician's statement and info.

Sorry to hear about your husband hurting his back.

The Dr. would have to state what is wrong and that he is unable to travel.

I would remind the Dr. that this is a cruise and with the boat rocking your husband has a chance of hurting his back more if the ship rocks too much. Walking can be very hard on a bad back, especially if the floor is moving.

Every insurance company has its own claim form requirements, so either call or go online and ask what is required for filing a claim. We were able to download the form for the doctor to complete for ours, though it wasn't CSA.

The Doctor must state in his/her professional opinion the condition precludes safely completing the cruise.

Some potential issues you could suggest to the doctor - starting a new medication, which you doctor may prefer to monitor, in the event of rough weather the rolling and pitching could worsen the injury, depending on cabin location if the ship is pitching and slamming it could worsen the injury, quality of the bed could also be detrimental, etc.

The other consideration, if your medical history changes and/or start a new medication within the pre-existing condition period, your medical insurance may not cover any issues on the cruise.

Your putting the horse in front of the cart. Even if cruise was months away, that cabin is yours, there is nothing to do UNTIL the ship sails and your not on it. If the ship doesn't sail until 5:00 PM, there's nothing to be done until 5:01 PM. First, you can easily cruise by walking, siting and laying. don't give up until the very last second. IF YOU DON"T GO, call your insurance and start a claim. A simple statement like "we couldn't sail be cause of an injury" They will send forms and instructions on what is needed. GO BY WHAT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY WANTS, NOT A SUGGESTION HERE. We had to cancel one cruise, we were reimbursed within 30 days.

This is dangerous advice. Many travel insurance policies require that you actually CANCEL the cruise before coverage kicks in. And some require that it be cancelled 24 hours in advance or more. They may deny a claim if you're simply a no-show.
