Giving Your Cabin Steward A Day Off?

I'll start cleaning the cabin when my husband starts doing some repair work around the ship. Maybe he can do some touch up painting or varnishing on our next cruise. Since that isn't going to happen they can continue to clean my room. I do pick up and put away all our things, throw our trash in the cans and place the dirty towels in a pile, generally make things easy to clean. From the looks of some cabins when we pass by I would say we are easy to take care of people.

I also make my own bed - and don't leave stuff lying around. I just think of it as something very easy for me to do - and a "bonus" for my cabin steward. We also tip on the first day, leave the auto tips on, and usually tip at the end and write a personal thank you note. These people have an unbelievable work ethic and get very little pay. Luckily, we have never had one who was not wonderful!

 

What a novel idea. Maybe some of the people who do a lot of complaining about the service they receive should read your post.

We have on a couple of occasions told the room steward that we did not need service. Usually it is because my wife gets migraines and has to lie down for awhile. Another time our room steward got employee of the month while we were onboard and saw the certificate being presented to him. We told him not to worry about the cabin for that night for doing such a good job.

By skipping one cabin really isn't giving them a break if you think about it. They tag team it & get it done in 5 minutes so they get an extra 5 minutes to put their feet up???? I don't get it.

I've tried, but they always manage to clean my room regardless of what I say. No big deal, I guess? The only way I could see you ensuring that they get the "time off" is if you stay in the room and keep the do not disturb up.

I think this is yet another "cruise critic" only idea that is probably not very good

 

I have seen people here suggest that we bring the workers a "souvenir" of home state....like these people would really want a coffee mug that says New Jersey or a Buckeye key chain from Ohio LOL

 

I remember when the "girl scout moms" gave them girl scout cookies

and other people want to give them phone cards, without knowing if they even work for the country they call home to

 

IMHO the room stewards probably would prefer to NOT have their routine interuppted....to leave the auto tips on and give a nice extra tip...to thank them personally , even a note would be nice and to WRITE ABOUT THEM ON THE COMMENT CARD< write down their name (which may be hard for us to remember) and write about them

 

I doubt they want a plate with the Statue of Liberty on it, or a shot glass with a Flamingo LOL. And the "day off"?? I really do think it would just confuse their routine....tips, praise on the comment card is the way to go IMHO

I am one of those nuerotic people who can't stand a mess - therefore, I am always "picking up" after my dh and one dd (the other is like me). This includes during vacations. Our cabin is extremely clean - we usually just need extra towels for the 4 of us (3 ladies - that means one towel for hair, one for body - lol) Don't even use the ice! We even ask that the upper be kept down, as not to make more work for the steward putting it away and taking it down each day. (though that literally takes seconds) We are probably some of the least "needy" passengers on board - and I like it that way!! P.S. - we always give a "hello" gift of green to our stewards, telling them we know how much work they do, and how we appreciate it, besides the auto-tips. They are then shocked when we literally ask for nothing during our cruise. But we always receive the biggest smiles and hello's (which we return) when they see us in the hallways.

Last year I had a father come up to the window with a 3 year old kid. He said to me if his son doesn't see the curl on the cone he was going to go crazy. We both laughed and I told him I would make it myself for him. You had to see this kids eye's light up. I put a huge curl on that cone. People really do want to see that curl.

Ok..I'm going to give my opinion of the "giving of gifts" for tips!! I have worked in the travel business for many years..I have received many lovely gifts from some of my clients and I truely appreciate everyones effects butttttttt.......I have a lot of unused gifts!! Perfume that isn't me...candy that I don't need...gift cards to restaurants that I don't use, I give them away, because I am comped when I take a group there. The people are working to earn money!!! They need the money to help their familes back home. The best thing you can do for a "great" cabin steward is tip him extra. Now, since I've said that...I do want you to know that I would never, ever not show appreciation to any client that offers me a gift they have picked out because I know they went that extra step to think of me!!!!

This thread is so silly - just like the "we always give phone cards because they appreciate it" or the "I always bring them little trinkets I made and I know they like them because they tell me", "I'm just so thoughtful for the unique thing I do for them or give them".

 

The last poster hit the nail on the head...people work for cash, that is why they are on the ship, and why the do their job. You want to play employer and tell the crew what they can do - well sorry, that's not your job. No different than the people posting incessantly about how underpaid the staff is and how everyone should tip triple the suggested amount lest they be taking food from the mouths of their kids.

 

You paid your cruise fare, leave the auto tips in place, let them do their job, and don't be the squeaky wheel. You're not doing anyone any favors.

Just wondering how many out there really give their cabin steward a day or two off when you cruise? On a 7 day we always give him or her at least 1 but mostly 2 days off from cleaning our cabin, just give us clean towels and washclothes and toliet paper if needed and we are good to go. It's not that we don't want the service and yes I know we have already paid for it in the cruise fare, it's just the fact that we like to give a break to as many of these hard working people we can. Even not cleaning our cabin for 2 days, they still have alot to do, maybe it helps them to get it done a little faster. Plus with the days off we can have our cabin all day to enjoy if we so desire without having to get out so it can be cleaned. And no we do not spend all of our time in the cabin. ;)

I'm not their supervisor and am not in the position to tell them how or when to do their jobs. If they are finished early and their supervisor questions why, I don't think replying that cabin x said not to worry about it will work.

I also wonder if it only makes more work for them when they do clean the room.

 

Since we do not do the scheduling, I doubt a day off is something we should be in charge of. It would not be a day off anyway, a day off means that you do not work at all. One Stateroom that is not cleaned; does not make for a "day off".

Speaking of towel animals, we were on the Glory 3 years ago, came back into the cabin one night after being out to find something on our bed that was in the shape of a womens bottom private part wearing my sunglasses, my wife asked me what is that supposed to be? I said I don't know but I know what it looks like, we just put it on the back of the couch and kept it the rest of the week laughing at it evey night! Never did find out what it was supposed to be :confused:

Exactly.. tell the cabin stewart you do not require service does not give them a day off.. Probably in someway screws up their schedule and may even give them more work if they have to spend more time in that cabin.

After I cleaned the coffee off the computer screen ... I dug out the kids' Carnival Towel Animal Book ... near as I can figure, either Bat, Seal, or maybe Scorpion. I'll never be able to look at that book the same way again! :rolleyes:
