Has anyone ever hit a jackpot on slots on the ships?

Hiya all, am so looking forward to trying the slots ( or pokies as we call them in New Zealand) on our first cruise in September but have a couple of queries.

Here in NZ we do not pay taxes on winnings of this type so would the taxes (American) apply to us?

Also if you buy casino coins prior to cruising (as you can with Holland America) are they for the slot machines or for the tables. As you can tell I am not used to your casinos.

Many thanks in anticipation of a response. Kia Ora

I am canadian, no you wont pay taxes. Last january, on the Dream, i won 1800$ on .25$ slots (Cleopatra). The casino boss made me sign a form and ask for my passeport to prove my citizenship.

A few years ago on the Carnival Liberty, I was at the sports bar getting my drink on....I watched a lady for about an hour, pumping dollar after dollar, without any luck...I made the decision that after she got up I was going to play the machine, so I got into stealth mode and waited across from the machine but still in the bar. The second she got up I hopped on the machine, put a $20 in (i think) and BAM....$500.00 JP baby!

On Carnival Dream, 31 October 2010, our first sea day, I won $9,000 on a penny slot machine that I had fed about $5. This was just before 9 a.m., with only a handful of players in the casino. My husband had to leave the casino to notify a ship's employee that there was a winner who needed assistance. Within 10 minutes we were swamped with Casino personnel. Of course we were issued a W2-G as a reminder to claim the winnings on our tax return. I always had thought the big winners occured when the casino was busy...no more! On our last sea day (miserable weather...doors blocked due to gail force winds), I hit on the same bank of machines repeatedly throughout the day, netting $1200 for that day. DH and I had to split the cash in order to go through customs upon departing the ship. (Limit of $10,000 pp cash) Before, I had never been a winner of more than $100 or so. This was definitely a lucky and fun cruise!

Royal flush for a grand was nice, but the best one (less money) was last year on the last day when I was playing 3 card poker.

I played about three hours with 100 and had 30 left so I played blind with 15 on the bonus bet. Straight flush.

I didn't even realize it until the table went wild. Over 600. It made me even for the cruise so it was nice.

Hit the Grand Princess for $1750 on .25 machine near the cage. Then later

that same night hit the 1.00 Wheel machine for 1k. NICE!!! Always play 3 card and Let-it-Ride bonus. One night hit 2 straight flushes and 3 of a kind on the same table(paid for the cruise) I think I saw them throw that dealer overboard later that night. He delt 5 straight flushes and 2 3 of a kinds in 25min. Never seen anything like it before. Will be on FOS in 2012.

I have had great luck with Let It Ride on the ships......plus the game is a great social game. And I agree always pay the 3 card bonus :)) I win more on that then the game itself sometimes LOL. Will be on Golden Princess 9/17/11 WOOHOOOO:D

Out of 38 cruises my biggest win was $1350 a couple years ago. On the Valor a couple weeks ago I'd been playing the quarter machines....and losing as usual. I took the last $30 I had on my card and decided to put $10 in 3 different dollar machines, playing $1 at a time. Lost on the first machine and had spun 3 times on the second machine when 3 "triples" came up....$1500 and I was thrilled. I've got to remember to get win/loss statements from Carnival cause since I'll be darned if I pay any taxes after all I lose every cruise!

And I had to provide photo ID before they'd hand over the cash so a tax form could be delivered to my cabin before the end of the cruise

I'm not sure if the reason US Citizens don't get a W-2 for more than $1200 in winnings is that in International Waters, it is not required? In US territorial waters, it is?

It's not because of Int waters. The same rules exist in Vegas for jackpots over $1200.

It has nothing to do with where the ship is. It has everything to do with where the company that owns the ship is based.

For instance on NCL, a U.S. citizen will get a W2g for a jackpot at or above $1200 because the company is a U.S. company and follows U.S. revenue laws.

$1500 on $1 machine playing $1 at a time on Carnival Valor in Jan. $1200 playing quarter machine on the first night. NCL Star a week or so ago and then $625 on the last night. Other than the last 2 cruises all I'd done on the past 38 cruises was lose

on last nite of cruise we only had enough cash to tip two of our wait staff so instead of dessert I went to the casino above the dining room and got 40 on my card from a penny machine. I played one time and it started to spin and spin and spin and spin. I ended up with $951 not a jackpot but it was to me. I handed the cash to my DH and he was shocked. (Waiters got more than $10 each) we headed to casino after dinner and I won 250 on Wheel of Fortune and 300 at roulette Left the casino with 1200 and no tax form because it was not one win. It made up for what we had lost for the 7 day cruise and a little extra WOOHOO

We were on the Carnival Dream, Don't remember the penny machine, (it was in a bank of machines on the right as you first come in the casino from the front of ship) but the 250 was on the dollar Wheel of Fortune

Resurrecting this thread because we still have 22 days until our next cruise and I have read everything else on the board lol

The last nigt of our honeymoon on Caribbean princess, we saw a lady hit for 1200 so we sat down across the aisle and hit 1232. Since they were busy paying her out, we played a machine next to us and hit 5000. He second machine was black and white double jackpot. The first was a quick hit. after all that excitement, we won 11000 nickels on an instant winner machine. It was a great end to a great honeymoon!

Sadly the next day when I looked at our final bill, it turns out the waitress that had taken care of us the whole cruise double charged us for every celebratory drink we had that night. princess did rectify the situation and refunded all the drinks from that night!

I don't gamble much but we had 5 sea days on a GOS cruise and I put in $1.00 and bet 1 nickel 1 line and won 1,800 nickels!! I think the machine went from nickels to $5 per line and maybe 25 lines? Anyway for me a jackpot!!:)

Carnival ships. 1am to 2am is best time to hit. On one sailing I hit the JP twice in one morning. $10'000 and $3'000. Slot penny machine. Ive been spoiled for years on Carnival; VIP boarding, free drinks (now a Drinks on us card before the casino opens first night), gift bags with polo shirts, etc. My biggest tip is get to know the host on board and the VIP reps in Miami corporate. They are the best and will treat you great!

I hit this one at 1pm, right before lunch.

They even put my picture on thier big winners board, one of these days I'll need to visit my picture.;) They told me it will probably be there for 2 years!
