Equinox No Smoking Letter

Recommended Posts

I am a non smoker myself; and, I recognize that many smokers can be rude and inconsiderate of the feelings of others. However, many non smokers also fall into this category. I pray that I will never become one of the non smoker police. In short, I do not believe that I will "turn in" someone for smoking.

As a smoker who just got off the Mercury, I don't object to the smoking areas mentioned in the letter. At least there is a smoking area on the Promenade deck so I could grab a smoke between dinner and dessert. They just stopped this on the Mercury. Still wish I could smoke on my balcony though..........FLAME ON! :)

I'll support you and all the courteous smokers [yes, there are a bunch of those] part way.

I am a non-smoker who doesn't like smoke, and I was on Mercury in November. Smoking on one side of the Promenade seemed a reasonable accommodation as the smoking area was easy for non-smokers to avoid, and the smoke didn't seem to "contaminate" any other area. Unless they outlaw all smoking I can't understand doing away with the Promenade. What is Celebrity thinking to arrive at this?

I can understand why smokers would like to use their balcony, but a big issue there is that smoke really does infiltrate ALL adjoining balconies [including mine].

I'm not saying they should quit smoking but in this age I thought their was enough non-smokers that they would make one smoke-free boat some where....Just for the people who can't enjoy the $5,000.00 they spent for the family to have fun. Smokers can still have all the others but just give us ONE so we can also enjoy ourselves.

I has asthma and was glad when I heard that Carnival was making Paradise a TOTALLY NONSMOKING SHIP and was hoping to book a cruise on it, but they discontinued the Nonsmoking restriction. They even had strict rules that if anyone was caught smoking they would be put off the ship in the next port. I heard (not sure where) that construction workers were not allowed to smoke anywhere on the ship.

I have never reported anyone for smoking in a nonsmoking area, but did see people smoking in nonsmoking areas.

I have been on Carnival, NCL, RCI and Bermuda Star (no longer operating), but now will plan on Celebrity for my next cruise.

So where exactly are the smoking locations limited to now? Are they the same on all ships? We will be on Summit in March, and having been on Azamara, the very limited smoking was fantastic.

Hi:) I am not a smoker but I know you can light up portside outside at

the pool. Those tables usually have ashtrays on them. That would be

the main pool.

There is an area on SUMMIT all the way aft of the buffet as well

that has tables, chairs, umbrellas and a bar. I believe you can smoke

portside out there too.

I don't know where else its allowed.

We sailed on Equinox in September. The limited smoking was wonderful! I think the casinos were mostly empty because of the non-smoking- but I enjoyed it! I wish they would completely do away with the smoking altogether. We still had to walk through clouds of smoke on the pool deck and the upper decks when we were just walking around the ship.

Thanks Thom.

I understand the problem and generally do whatever I can to avoid annoying non-smokers. My father smoked stinky cigars when we were kids so I know how annoying stinky smoke can be! I also understand the balcony issue and was just joking in my message.

The problem is most of us started smoking years ago and have repeatedly tried to quit, but it is not easy. In fact, for me, it has literally been impossible. All I ask is some understanding of this by non-smokers. Sometimes we smokers get that, but lately, not so much. The outside promenade deck restriction on the Mercury was very irritating....especially since NO ONE was ever out there except us sneak-smokers.

I just got of the Ruby Princess.... it was a perfect cruise (10 days southern Caribbean).

I will not go back to Princess.... they did everything right, but my balcony smelled like smoke (they are getting a standard 20% of smokers, plus the extra smokers who are leaving Celebrity are showing up in Princess)

Princess worked their tale off to give me the prefect curies and I'd give them a A+ and my business for the next 30 years ( I just started cruising ) if they didn't allow smokers to smoke on any balcony.

I left Carnival because it had too many drunks and smokers, I am now leaving Princess because it had too many smokers.... I've got my fingers crossed that Celebrity is the place for folks who want to have fun, relax, and smell the fresh sea air :D

I'm just curious, but how could your balcony "smell like smoke" when it's outside? Enough to be really offensive, I mean?

Does anyone know if the aft cabins can smell the cigar/cigarette smoke from the sunset bar.. I know it will probably be dispersed in the air but we are in 9382(panorama deck). We have moved down a floor because of the soot problem so hopefully we will be far enough away

We were in #9382 last Feb. No problem with smoke odour at all. However, standing one deck below Sunset Bar it wafts down on the smoking side. Solution....move over to the other side! LOL!!

I book a balcony because we like to have breakfast outside each morning.

Smokers all try to book balconies so they can have that first cig as they role out of bed, before they get dressed. Can you see the conflict? :D

Non-smoker will always lose when a smoker and non-smoker are randomly assigned to rooms on Princess where smoking is allowed on balconies.

I should have said... my balcony "smelled like smoke" during the 3 times a day when both smokers and non-smokers tend to use their balcony the most.

1) breakfast (especial on port days, most get up at the same time)

2) before dinner (that hour when many wife's are doing hair and make-up)

3) late night before bed (both smokers and non-smokers take one last look)

The lady below me on the Ruby smoked 7 to 8 times a day. I tried to learn her schedule so I could find times when I could smell the fresh sea air. I got lucky when after 5 days, her party left the ship for some reason (I heard it was a medical emergency) I felt guilty for enjoying my balcony for the last 5 days of my trip, but at the same time, I was getting tired of paying the price for someone else's habit.

I hope Celebrity allows me to get what I pay for... I pay for a balcony to eat breakfast on and enjoy the fresh sea air. I didn't get that on Carnival or Princess.... and although I enjoyed both lines, I'm now shopping for a balcony that is smoke free.

On Equinox, we were in a portside midship balcony on deck 7 and the smoke from the smokers on deck 5 promenade port side did filter up and back to us on our balcony. Will book higher and farther away next time.

I understand that quitting is difficult, and I sympathize with you on that. One thing no one considers is that for those of us who have never smoked, that was very difficult as well. Both of my parents smoked, as well as all of my uncles and aunts. Growing up in the 50s and 60s, most, if not all, of my friends smoked, even in high school. Many of us were surrounded by smokers all of our younger lives, and there was immense peer pressure to join them. I personally had to deal with much teasing and scorn because I refused to smoke with my friends, who all thought it was "cool".

Somehow, I didn't. I am not exactly sure why - it's not that I am any better than the smokers. I think it's because I didn't like the taste of the one cigarette I ever tried, so never had another one (I feel the same way about brussel sprouts, BTW :) ).

So, yes, I understand it is difficult, so will never condem someone who smokes. But, I still wish I will never encounter the smoke, ever. Nothing personal, just my preference.

I have a portside balcony booked on the emerald deck for an upcoming cruise on a solstice class ship. Does the Smoking zone on the portside deck 5 promenade extend the length of the promenade or is it localized to certain areas? I guess what I am asking is if there are "safe" zones to book a port balcony on emerald deck where I won't have to worry about smoke drifting up into my balcony or if I'm better off just switching to a starboard room.

This is rather confusing; what deck are you concerned with? As far as I know no Celebrity ship has ever had an Emerald deck. Solstice class ship decks run bottom to top:

Plaza Deck

Promenade Deck

Entertainment Deck

Continental Deck

Sunrise Deck

Vista Deck

Panorama Deck

Sky Deck

Penthouse Deck

Resort Deck

Lido Deck

The Lawn Club

Solstice Deck

Note that on Mercury smoking was allowed on the Promenade deck in early November 2009, but it has been reported on this thread that it is now banned there. IF that is true fleet wide [i suspect that is true, but do not know that] your concern is no longer an issue.

The great non-smoking casino on the Solstice was packed every night.

My Apologies. We are doing b2b cruising on the Celebrity Solstice and Emerald Princess and I just got our decks switched. We will be on the Continental deck midship portside, just in front of the "hump" in the middle.

Thanks for the response. Hopefully smoke won't be an issue.
