Room Cleaning Tipping ?s

So we decided to not do the pre-tip option and will be tipping at the end of the trip. I'm just confused about tipping the room cleaning people. Are they also referred to as "room stewards"? Are the cleaning people part of the group that gets the tip at the end of the trip? Should we be leaving tips on our beds everyday instead? Thanks again.

Which cruise line are you on? That makes a big difference as to how they handle tipping. But, in short you never tip by the day, or leave money on the bed. Some lines allow you to put your tips on your sign and sail account and some still have cash tipping. A couple of nights before your cruise ends, you'll receive envelops in your cabin with the designated person's name on the front, ie Cabin Steward, Waiter, Assistant Waiter, etc. You put your cash in the envelop and give it to the appropriate person on the last night of your cruise.

The room attendant/steward is the equivelent of a hotel maid...but they will have a bit more contact with you than a hotel housekeeper does.

They will clean your cabin and bath, change linens and towels and bring your ice. If you have any requests, that's the person to ask! They will come in while you're at dinner and do the "turn down" service on your bedding...and if you have cots, sofabeds, etc....they will get that ready for the night.

That is the person you should tip...it generally runs about $3.50 per person, per day...check with Carnival for the exact amount they suggest.

The room stewards are usually fantastic. They are assigned a block of cabins, so you can usually find them around your hallway in the morning up until 1 pm and then again in the early evening if you have any special requests. Make use of the "Do Not Disturb" and "Make up my Room" signs. If you go out to breakfast and put a "Make up my Room" sign on your door, it will almost always be done by the time you get back. I think they are trained to monitor who is coming and going so they can slip in and do your room while you are out. They know who has early and late dinner so they can check the room again in the evening.

If you are sailing with Carnival, they will automatically add tips to your onboard account. You can go go guest relations and adjust these according to service, but leaving them on there is really the easiest way to pay tips. It takes truly horrid service to tip below the recommended amount for me.

The room stewards are the room cleaning people. And also the people that will fill any requests..like for more ice, blankets, pillows, move furniture, fill bathroom supplies, and almost anything else you can think of that you might want in your cabin while on your cruise.

Yes, they are part of the tip pool. So if you're tipping at the end of the trip, that is when you would tip them. If you're going to offer what the cruise line recommends (and which would be billed on your ship account), that generally will cover them, and everyone else.

If instead you are intent on handing out the money yourself, don't forget ALL the waiters -- including those who serve you breakfast and lunch, work in the buffet, work in the other eating venues; and the workers who clean up after you in all those eating establishments; and the workers who vacuum the halls and clean other public areas of the ship that you might frequent, and those that bring you room service if you order it. And more. You'll need to allot most of the afternoon of your second-to-the last day aboard, tracking down these folks, though, as they don't have just one assignment, and might be anywhere on the ship as part of their job.

Have a great cruise!

Also, some cruise lines that have the prepaid tips/service charge require anyone receiving a cash tip to report it. If you have removed the tips from your account, they must turn it in. Then the money is divided up (percentage) among the people who would have been receiving the tip in the first place. If you leave the prepaid tip/service charge in place, and you still tip extra in cash, the person receivng the cash will get to keep what you give them, after verifying the automatic tips are still in place.
