zammer217 Posted February 23, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 23, 2010 Leaving out of San Diego and would like to check in and then leave the ship to do a little shopping. Is this possible?
5waldos Posted February 23, 2010 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2010 Why not shop then check in? You can drop off your bags with the porters then wander. Unlikely that you could get your bags into your room in time to give you a chance to shop. But I don't know the answer to your actual question. Cruise_Lemming Posted February 23, 2010 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2010 I don't know the answer to this person's question either. But, imagine the mayhem if just a fraction of the people who check in, wanted to leave the ship to go shopping. In my opinion, "checking in" should be just that! I just cannot imagine the procedures, strain on cruise line employees, and the confusion wondering, who's checked in, and who's ashore shopping. I would have to imagine that the ships rules would state, unless it's a medical or some other emergency, once checked in, it's all-aboard!
zammer217 Posted February 23, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted February 23, 2010 That is basically the answer I need. I just don't want to carry the bags around but wasn't sure if we could leave them with the porter without checking in.
JLC@SD Posted February 23, 2010 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2010 We have not sailed Carnival.......but all other cruise lines let you go ashore after checking in.......since you now will have a cruise card to scan when getting off..........just make sure you have time to get back on board on time. spencercoop Posted February 23, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 23, 2010 I have never tried going back ashore after checking in on embarkation day, but I have heard of other people who have.
5waldos Posted February 23, 2010 #7 Share Posted February 23, 2010 The first thing you do is to check your bags. At that point you could disappear for as long as you dared before completing check in so you'd be fine and bagless.
uppitycats Posted February 23, 2010 #8 Share Posted February 23, 2010 No, you're held captive on the cruise ship until it leaves port and arrives at the next port!!!!! (Just kidding...) Drop your bags with the porters, and either head off shopping and check in when you get back, or proceed to check in and get your ship sign-and-sail card, and then head off to do your shopping. Just pay careful attention to when the ship is scheduled to leave port -- ASK the crew..a couple of times..to be sure!...and find out what time is the latest you need to be back to get aboard! This is usually a minimum of 90 minutes before the ship is to leave port. Don't want to be left behind!
zqvol Posted February 23, 2010 #9 Share Posted February 23, 2010 (edited) Leaving out of San Diego and would like to check in and then leave the ship to do a little shopping. Is this possible? Yes it is possible. Once you are checked in you can come and go just like at any other port of call. Most ports you would not want to because there is nothing around the ship, but in San Diego since you are right downtown, it is certainly possible. The better way to do it though is probably as was suggested. Leave your luggage with the porters, go shop and then board the ship. That way you are not going in the opposite direction of most of the traffic. Edited February 23, 2010 by zqvol
LambKnuckles Posted February 23, 2010 #10 Share Posted February 23, 2010 I know as a Back 2 Back cruiser you may come and go at the ports... I know someone who forgot something in the car and was allowed to go back... I assume you can. This was in NOLA and in Galveston...
dotshub Posted February 23, 2010 #11 Share Posted February 23, 2010 Yes Carnival lets you get back off. We have done that in more than one port with no problem.
tikimon Posted February 23, 2010 #12 Share Posted February 23, 2010 Yes you can come and go as you please, have done it plenty of times with no problems at all.

It is not the days of Gopher and Julie standing there with a pen and paper checking people off. It is all computers. Check in, leave the ship, just swipe your SeaPass when returning. Just don't miss the ship. When standing in line waiting to board (for the first time) you will notice a lot of crew/passengers walking right by and into the ship. Enjoy San Diego. Cruise_Lemming Posted February 23, 2010 #14 Share Posted February 23, 2010 All that being said, my apologies to the OP who inquired about shopping after checking in. Despite that it defies the laws of common sense, it appears that not only is it possible, but thanks to the computer age, is frequently done too! I stand corrected! Gracie/petty Posted August 29, 2018 #15 Share Posted August 29, 2018 I just asked someone at NCL about checking in and getting off the boat to site see. They said absolutely as long as you’re back on board 2 hours prior to departure.
memoak Posted August 29, 2018 #16 Share Posted August 29, 2018 Make sure and check the muster time - you will need to be on board for that fun adventure
elcuchio24 Posted August 29, 2018 #17 Share Posted August 29, 2018 I have never tried going back ashore after checking in on embarkation day, but I have heard of other people who have. We have done it in San Juan a couple times. All depends when the departure is. If its 9-10pm like in SJ, no problem. If its 4, doesnt make a lot of sense. jordanaire Posted August 29, 2018 #18 Share Posted August 29, 2018 We have sailed out of San Diego before and I don't know where OP would even go to shop. There aren't any stores near the port.
