Caribbean Princess Pax Killed in Tortola Excursion

We are on board and the mood is somber here on board. How tragic this is for all involved. There has been a lot of activity with the Captain and other ship's Officers meeting the family on shore and escorting many of the injured on board as well.

The Captain announced the tragic news earlier and stated more details will follow. Many are in the Medical Center with cuts, scraps / abrasions, etc. We had left the ship in a closed taxi / van and after the trip up and over the mountain to get to Brewer's Bay, we had commented about the hairpin turns and that our driver had done a great job. Shortly after we got to the beach we heard all sorts of sirens. The passengers were in an open-air type of bus that is used so commonly here in the islands. We were told by our taxi driver on our return that the vehicle involved in the crash had lost it's brakes. Of course that could be speculation right now.

We are due to depart at 6:00 PM but I am not expecting that we will leave on time. Everyone is understanding of course. Some local authorities have been here....and I can only assume it is to meet with the others involved in the accident.

My thoughts are with all suffering from the loss of their son and also with those suffering injuries today. :( :(

I cannot imagine the horrible sadness; we travel with our adult son to take him to out of the way places so I know it must of been unbelieveable to try and be comforted but I know Princess will be all they are known to be in these tragedies. God care for the injured, as well. thoughts and care to all......sailinsal

The crash happened on a particularly steep bit of hill which often scares me when I drive down it altho' I'm fine on other roads in Tortola, having driven there a lot.

Looking at the pictures, it was an enclosed van, not an open jitney - for which, thank goodness, or there could have been many more deaths - one is too many - my deepest sympathy goes to the bereaved family, and to those who were injured.

How sad and tragic. You never think anything can happen to you on vacation, ...

Sadly no. This is a time when you are most relaxed and either your defences are down or your unfamiliarity to the location leaves you vulnerable. I am in absolutely in know way saying this is a contributory factor in this incident. This I hope is an incident where there is no blame to be apportioned.

For the sake or clarity and due to the limitations of the system I am re posting my comment.

Sad and tragic certainly, however sadly and ironically a vacation is a time when you are most relaxed and either your defences are down or your unfamiliarity to the location leaves you vulnerable. I am in absolutely in know way saying this is a contributory factor in this incident. This I hope is an incident where there is no blame to be apportioned.

My brother and sister-in-law are on the Caribbean Princess this week. We haven't heard anything from them, so no news is good news I guess. Hope they weren't on that excursion that crashed. Sounds like one they could take. My heart goes out to the family that lost their son.

In December of 2004 - we went to Tortola for the first time. Either right before that or right after that, there was a bus accident with cruise passengers. I remember speaking to a friend who was going after me (April 2005) about this accident and we both understood why it could have happened.

I am so sorry for the family involved.
