Which OBC is used first?

Recommended Posts

I have two types of OBC, VISA points certificates credit and price drop credit. I've never ended a cruise with any money left as credit but I've also never had as much credit as this time either. So, I'm wondering if both these types of OBC are refunded to your credit card, and, if not, which will be used first?

I would guess that they don't use your OBC in any "order." I would bet if you have say $800 in OBC and say $500 is non-refundable. As long as you spend at least the $500 you would be fine, and the rest would be refunded. That's just a guess...

OBC is used in order and it seems not to be true what what CB posted.

But to be a bit more specific about the topic. When they first started to differ between refundable and non-refundable OBC I wrote corporate to ask exactly this question. The answer from the CEO´s office was that non-refundable OBC would be used first. However since then many many reports here on CC indicate that this policy never went into effect and the non-refundable is used first and all left over refundable OBC is refunded at the end of the cruise.

Both your OBC's are refundable if not used. If you have and are going to use an RCI Visa card when you check in at the pier, remember than any amount of credit from RCI that appears on your statement will result in the loss of "double" points.

The refundable portion is used first, if you have 2 kinds! Best to spend it all!

Non-refundable is used first followed by refundable.

When RCI went to giving OBC after a price drop if final payment had been made, I vaguely remember reading that if you don't spend it all, they do refund it. Of course, now, I can't find that anywhere "written in stone." Anybody have any insight on this? I just picked up $1260 in price reduction and would have a hard time spending that on top of the $600 I got for booking on board during the December Diamond Event. I figure if "push comes to shove," I'll "gamble" and take a 3% hit.

We had some OBC from a price drop on our last cruise. I bought my wife a new Canon camera in onboard shops and we took some gambling cash from the casino, with the 3% charge. Worked out well for us.

We made a number of reservations in Dec 2008 to get in under the wire for multiple dipping. One of these cruises was on Freedom in January. We had an on-board booking OBC of $100, a stockholder OBC of $100, a OBC from our TA of $100, and an after Final Payment price reduction OBC of $100 [in addition we used a C&A Coupon, but that was used as a price reduction up front]. Guest Relations very explicited said that the two RCI OBC [for on-board-booking and for shareholder] were NOT refundable. Since some of our $400 in OBCs was not spent I cashed it out from Guest Relations on the last full day - I think it would have been credited back to my credit card, but I figured that if I got the cash in hand there would be no wondering and no worrying. I was told that I could not cash out until the last full day on the ship.

We received a nice price drop after final payment for our November cruise last year. Went to GR and withdrew it against my SeaPass with no problem.

Remember, any money that you receive as an OBC due to a price drop after final payment is actually your money to begin with. :)
