Weight Gain on HAL

I eat on a cruise like I eat at home. Little meals. I'm diabetic and this works for me. I also walk up and down the hall to the Neptune for juice, tea or coffee several times a day. Those halls are long so I usually walk around in a circle once a day too. Can't do stairs, knees protest. Long walk to the Casino too.;) I do eat in the MDR for dinner but only eat half portions so I can have a small sugar free dessert. This has worked for me for 3 cruises, we'll see next Feb. if I can duplicate the loss.:D We also do not eat in the Lido very often, too many temptations. Not bragging, just telling it like it is. :)

I gained 5-7 pounds on this last cruise. I have been home for a week and have lost 4 pounds of it. Getting back to eating normal plus getting back to your regular routine works for me. My clothes still fit so thats a good sign........lol:D

My last cruise in Dec '09 was a 17 nighter. Had a doctor's appointment 2 days after I got back and "HAD" to be weighed. I had actually lost 4 pounds!

I am a breakfast person, so that is my largest meal of the day and with a lot walking and stuff, I can burn that off. Dinner for me is always on the light side, but I did take quite a few cookie's back to the stateroom for a late night treat. Thought for sure that would do me in! Guess not... I'm not one to have to try everything and I really do think before I eat anything. I never felt deprived. Next cruise however, could be a very different story!!

get after it when home..Now with 20 sea daze and 4 land daze looming.want to get a jump on it .I have been on the "FAT SMASH" (see web site) since Mar 9th..have 13 pounds gone, and Fri is a month. I'm in phase 2, and find it easy to do. Easy to jump back into when need be. I am NOT a dieter..but do watch. So this is a snap for non-dieters!!!

I envy those of you who can write here you eat what you want on cruises and don't gain. I used to be able to have some treats and cheats as I used to call them and still maintain my weight. I'd always be back to my 'pre cruise' weight within 10 days of returning home.

Now I am older and the metabolism has slowed blah blah blah and can't be so carefree about what I eat while cruising. We cruise too many days each year to permit that. I carefully consider what treats to allow myself and choose carefully to make the most of the calories.

We walk a lot (laps on Promenade Deck) and miles in ports. We walk stairs when we can. I have limits on how many flights I can do.

So, no, I can't eat what I want and not gain. :(

Am I the only one here who has to be careful?

The most I've gained was about 3 pounds. I eat whatever but take the stairs as much as possible and walk A LOT! That said, I don't go on a cruise worrying about what I am going to gain. I eat what I want, when I want knowing I'll eat right at home.

I usually lose weight on a cruise...mainly because in years past, I've always walked more on the cruise than at home. On our cruises, we usually eat room service breakfast...oatmeal or eggbeaters...juice and coffee, same as at home. A salad for lunch, sometimes ice cream in the afternoon, and dinner which is, of course, more food than we eat at home, given all the courses. Sometimes, though, I will just have an appetizer and salad. And always have the no sugar added desserts...except when we dine in the Pinnacle.

This year on our 20 day cruise I was quite surprised that my weight stayed the same given that I had to use my TravelScoot on shore excursions and sometimes around the ship because of my hip and back issues.

We exercise walk almost every day at home as well as when we're on the ships. Our metabolisms are accustomed to our walking so we do more when on the ships.

Every body (everybody) is different.

I guess all of you are just luckier than me. :(

I always exect to see much more room in my suitcase when I pack to go home because my clothes have shrunk so much in the salt air. And yet it doesn't happen. That makes me think that the suitcases must be shrinking in the salt air also.

Yes, those suitcases undoubtably shrink while they are in hiding during the cruise. We have indisputable evidence of this beacause it's always more difficult to get everything back into the suitcases at the end of the cruise. Much more difficult than it was to pack while getting ready for the cruise.:o:o

The fitness instructor really scared my sister when he mentioned the first day on our Eurodam cruise last week that it is typical to gain "7-14lbs" in a week on a cruise...only she'd thought he'd said "FOURTY pounds!"

We hit up the gym every morning before napping in a comfy chair on deck in the afternoon and managed to stay within a pound or so.

There must be some scientist out there in CC-land who can explain this puzzling phenomenon...

The salt air subtly changes the molecular structure of fabrics. Bags, being made from heavier material, naturally have heavier molecules which are more heavily affected than are smaller, lighter molecules. This shrinkage in soft sided baggage is why we encounter SO much difficulty in getting everything packed back into said bags at the end of a cruise. After all, the bags with their larger, heavier molecules shrank more than did the clothes with their lighter molecules.

See - it's very simple.;)
