DiveCruiser Posted May 10, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 10, 2010 Has any one been caught with beer or booze in their check thru luggage. :( When and what happened?? ;) Or is this just a myth to slow Smuggling!?!?!?!?!?!?
lady_cruiser Posted May 10, 2010 #2 Share Posted May 10, 2010 About three years ago the guy in the front of us was drinking a can of beer when we went through security. The lady just told him he couldn't bring it with him onboard so he finished drinking it, handed her the empty can, asked her to please throw it away for him and told her thank you then went on his merry way. suenruss Posted May 10, 2010 #3 Share Posted May 10, 2010 Someone posted on here last week to say that he'd been stopped when boarding a RC cruise, and was told that he wasn't allowed to sail - NO CRUISE!
mylan Posted May 10, 2010 #4 Share Posted May 10, 2010 Someone posted on here last week to say that he'd been stopped when boarding a RC cruise, and was told that he wasn't allowed to sail - NO CRUISE! And I think by now the consensus is that it was not true. The O.P. hasn't come back on to defend himself yet but to answer your question: Yes, many people have had their alcohol confiscated and more have made it without any problems. I think to be on the safe side, i'll order mine through Bon Voyage.
Rare Essiesmom Posted May 10, 2010 #5 Share Posted May 10, 2010 Someone posted today on the Carnival board that their checked bags were searched and a rum runner removed and discarded. Note was left in suitcase. EM
njhorseman Posted May 10, 2010 #6 Share Posted May 10, 2010 I've seen some pretty large numbers of people on embarkation day in the "naughty room" opening their bags in front of security. It's no myth. Some cruise lines check more closely than others, but they do check for smuggled alcohol.
PennyAgain Posted May 10, 2010 #7 Share Posted May 10, 2010 My bag was searched when I had a bottle of real mouthwash in it. They do check.

lady_cruiser Posted May 10, 2010 #13 Share Posted May 10, 2010  Drinking beer on line? Is that even allowed! :D I'm not sure but no one told him anything until we got to the security area. But you have to realize with the hundreds of people standing in line, snaking through those rope lines no one would notice one person drinking a beer. He actually was in our group tour. A local radio station sponsors a group tour every year and they actually have anywhere from 600 to 900 people who sign up with them. The station hires tour buses that drive us from Lafayette (LA) and neighboring cities to either the Port of Galveston or Port of New Orleans and back home again. The minute the tour buses leaves the malls' parking lots, which is our pickup point, the jello shots and beer bottles start flowing. And this is at 8:30 AM. Us Cajuns really know how to party hard. So if you don't want to get stuck onboard with such a large group I can tell everyone here that the next group with this radio station is the week of February 26, 2011. CC's rules won't allow to mention the name of the radio station since it is not a CC Group Cruise so you might need to do a search. Someone mentioned that to find out if there will be a group on your cruise ship all you have to put in the name of the ship, which is Carnival Triumph and date which is 02/26/2011. kitty9 Posted May 10, 2010 #14 Share Posted May 10, 2010 I've seen the security personnel take booze from a lot of passengers. And, since they're using the stronger xray machines, it's quite easy to see the booze in the checked luggage. And now, they're even getting smart with finding the rum runners. On my most recent cruise, I heard at least 10 names being called to the "bad boy room" for baggage inspection.
bucky7680 Posted May 11, 2010 #15 Share Posted May 11, 2010 On our last Carnival cruise out of San Juan they had a Duty Free store in the embarkation termial. I brought 5 bottles on through carry on with no problems. The worst thing they will do is confiscate your booze.
stanford's girl Posted May 11, 2010 #16 Share Posted May 11, 2010 After 12 cruises with no problem, I just had my first experience with getting my booze confiscated. I was sailing on the Carnival Paradise 4/26/10. I put two 1 liter platypus containers (same as rum runners) in my checked suitcase. One had Vodka in it and the other had Bailey's in it. When my bag was delivered to my room, I opened it up and there was a letter from Carnival saying that they had taken it. So I looked but they had only taken the one with Vodka in it. I have no idea why they just took that one. If they had opened them both up and smelled them, they would have known that they were both booze. 2 of my friends on the same cruise, checked through booze in their suitcases also but theirs got through. So who really knows how they decide who to screen and who not to??

It's no myth. Some cruise lines check more closely than others, but they do check for smuggled alcohol. NCL is famous for their "Naughty" room. A friend we met on board was escorted to this N-room when bottles were found in his bags. They gave him a "Time ouT", and when went to his cabin he found colored tape stretched as an "X" acrooss the door. Evidently, really seriious about their booze revenues. daisy-mae Posted May 11, 2010 #18 Share Posted May 11, 2010 My husband is convinced that his suitcase was searched on our recent cruise with NCL. He had a new bottle of dandruff shampoo (same shape as a 1/5th bottle), and it had been lifted out of his shaving bag. We suspect that it had been searched because they neglected to close the three zippers on the bag.
trish1c Posted May 11, 2010 #19 Share Posted May 11, 2010 DH's bag came to the cabin. I got a note asking me to come to another part of the ship. I showed up in the bowels of the ship, note in hand & stood in a very long line. There were ship's personel at a table fronting a room filled with luggage, booze 8 irons. It was kind of funny to see all the irons lined up. When I got to the front they produced my bag & asked me to open it. They asked me if I had any contraband. I pulled out a bottle of champagne. They stuck a label on it with my cabin # & told me I could ask for in & I would get it back for the corkage fee. We enjoyed it on formal night. The guy next to me pulled a half gallon of cheap vodka out of his bag. Upon seeing the 2 bottles (mine & his his wife hit him & whined "I'm so embarrassed. At least she brought good stuff." I burst out laughing. On another cruise a friend got called to the "naughty room" b/c he had a bottle of cognac in his bag. this time the naughty room was in a nicer place but the proceedure was similar. Because his contraband was hard alcohol, he had to go stand in the same long time to get it back at the end of the cruise. It's a PITA but it's not a huge deal. They don't throw you off the ship or anything & you do get your liquor back at the end of the cruise.
Suefranss Posted May 11, 2010 #20 Share Posted May 11, 2010 I always travel with those small bottles of liquor you can get at the local liquor store. They make a nice evening cocktail. I do place them in my checked luggage, however. I've never had a problem bringing them aboard, nor have I had a problem carrying a bottle of wine on board. okbowler Posted May 12, 2010 #23 Share Posted May 12, 2010 The reason I use 8 oz. rum runners is so that I can put them in my shoes, in my checked luggage. There is no unusual or empty spaces in the suitcase and the shoe protects the bag. I do not put any bottle of any kind in that bag. Bill
