Has anyone been to Safaga? I just looked on Google Earth and there doesn't seem to be much there.

FO THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE WATCHING THE STATE OF ORIGIN LEAGUE.....GO QUEENSLAND.... 10...0 AFTER 24 MINUTES!!

Jillybean:)

Thats good. I bet $50 that Qld will win by 13+ points for the office punters club!!!!!! All these NSW people were not impressed but I said I'm still a loyal Queenslander :D

Just read this update on one of the blogs:

A large white banner hangs from the side of the ship saying to the pirates, “Security warning, keep 50 metres away from this ship.” There are high pressure hoses in position all around the decks. However, there has been no sight of pirates, thanks be to God.

Lets hope they continue to have a safe journey.

here is sheree's entry for sofaga last year... though to just hang around safaga I don't know if there would be much to do...

here is another blog entry from the pacific princess earlier this year where one person went to the valley of the kings and the other stayed in town...

And another update:

An unscheduled overnight stop will happen in Port Said to give the technical people a chance to check out the ship re the problem we had yesterday.

well hopefully the distance between cairo and kusadasi is not far as they have the day to catch up... just hope all is fixable in that time frame..

Joanne do you know why they are doing the cruise in the reverse direction from last year?

And another update:

The ship is now being run by Italian officers who were introduced to the passengers tonight. An unscheduled overnight stop will happen in Port Said to give the technical people a chance to check out the ship re the problem we had yesterday.

Yes I read that too on one of the blogs this morning. Must be quite a serious problem if it needs an overnight to fix it.

Just hope they don't break down again as they are at the moment in big seas. Wouldn't fancy bobbing around in rough seas too much.

leanne no I am not sure why but i think it is a good idea as it is more port intensive during the first half so it would probably be better while everyone is still fresh LOL..... and lighter :D:p:D

or maybe it just works better for them as ours next year is going in the same direction...

I can't be sure, but I would suggest that the opposite direction is easier on the staff/crew and passengers. To lose an hour on a regular basis after a while you begin to take its toll, particularly when there are spots where you lose and hour a day 6 days in a row, 1 hour less sleep during the night makes it harder than 1 hours additional sleep....... and probably works better from a crew/roster point of view.

For whatever reason I noticed they had to really 'discount' the Dubai to Sydney last leg on the 2010 cruise, ......it will be interesting to see whether there is a similar LA to Sydney 'discounting' on empty cabins...... I'm tipping not......the US market should 'absorb' the vacant cabins, whereas it was difficult with little or no market in Dubai and Australians had to fly in to return the last sector.

have you read the blogs... seems they are having more troubles and looks like they will miss safaga.... talk about missing one of the prime ports....

lets hope they can fix everything in cario though someone did mention a laundry rumour of 3 days in port to fix....

hope all goes well for them!!

Pirate Alley is the last place you would want to lose power or break down.

There will be a lot of very dissapointed and disgruntled people if they change Safaga.

"No information has been provided by the officers or cruise director so we are really all in the dark. "

I can imagine how frustrating this is... I remember with our first cruise when we had missed ports due to swine flu etc... it was frustrating as no one was telling anyone anything.. and I can imagine there are some very anxious people on that boat wondering what is going on... and it is an older demographic and I know how my parents get really stressed at the littlest thing ...... guess they are just putting off the long complaints queue at the pursers desk LOL...

"No information has been provided by the officers or cruise director so we are really all in the dark. "

I can imagine two reasons for this - either the ships Officers (including the Engineers) themselves do not really know what the problem is or - they do know and think that telling everybody what the problem is will only spread alarm. General alarm is not what anybody needs on a passenger ship at sea. Think about it - if one of the props has fallen off( or something akin) - does a knowledge of that help the passengers in any way??

Wife and I will be in this area in November - before we get to Suez, we will be stopping at Sharm El Sheik , which hopefully will allow for a tour into the Sinai desert to St Catherines monastery ( supposedly the site of Moses's burning bush http://www.sacredsites.com/africa/egypt/mount_sinai.html)

At Suez, we have the option of seeing the pyramids or transiting the canal. The Pyramids tour is 14 hour long with 3hours in the bus each way - it leaves the ship at 4 AM. Tour costs with P &O are quite reasonable I think ( 100UKP=about $170AUD) - not bad for 14 hours tour and breakfast and lunch in fancy hotels._ Anyway, we have decided to do the canal transit - we will also be going through the Panama canal on the way home, so have decided to be able to say we have seen both. The Pyramids will have to wait for a Mediterranean cruise sometime.

This below is part of the ships tour for the Pyramids

"Coaches will most likely be required to travel in a police-escorted convoy and will be subject to certain security requirements and possible delays." Doesn't really worry us - but all in all, we felt that the pyramids was just "too much" :p - to each his/her own.

From reading one of the blogs it looks like they are out of pirate waters. Their position is also showing up on the scanner now.

Yep... they are showing up again.

However , we need to remember that site is pre programmed and shows their scheduled position, so if there is ever a change in itinerary, it may still show the old course.... unless someone changes it manually.

The disappointment of missing Karnak and Valley of the Kings would be high now, but I have a sense that Princess will sweeten the apology somewhat to passengers making it more bearable a week or so down the track. There will always be a 'need' to come back which for some will come to fruition..... and long term a positive outcome...... Whilst exceptionally memorable (Karnak & Valley of the Kings) I'm glad that they didn't miss out on Oman - it really was special and different, and a place that you would unlikely come back too because you 'missed' it...... where as Egypt offers 'more' for a reason to return.

But if you read this post on the blog, might explain why some aren't out on the deck:

Quote of the day: “You can go to the Purser’s desk anytime and they’ll give you a printout of your onboard account. Then they’ll pick you up off the floor and call the nurse. She’s a very busy person.” Fellow passenger, a cynical Pom of course!

Another lazy day on the floating retirement village! Rumour has it that 8 people have passed away since the cruise left Sydney, but that is just a rumour… one of our dinner table buddies delights in keeping us up to date with the score. I feel he’s tempting fate though, seeing he’s hitting 80 himself…
