Hi folks

Seems like you know more about what's happening than we do! All is now silent from the bridge... they are using the mushroom principle and keeping is in the dark!!

We're just chilling, but some people are pretty crabby on missing out the Valley of the Kings. Fair enough, but they are only upsetting themselves as there's nothing they can do about it.

Food is great though - that's some compensation!

Philip

have you read the blogs... seems they are having more troubles and looks like they will miss safaga.... talk about missing one of the prime ports....

lets hope they can fix everything in cario though someone did mention a laundry rumour of 3 days in port to fix....

hope all goes well for them!!

There certainly is a lot of unhappy cruisers due to missing Safaga, given that this port was why most booked this cruise.

What sort of compensation with Princess give the passengers, being that this was such a major port of call?

i dont know the port but they would refund the money onto their card if they were doing a ships tour, these things do happen when its outside their control and maybe give them back any port charges....we have missed ports of call and received nothing back

i just noticed this and if it cant be fixed they wont be happy

And Philip has included comments about the engine problems with Dawn. He mentioned that some have said that there could be issues with continuing the cruise if it can't be solved at the next port

On one blog they mentioned vibrations. We had that problem last december and they had to fly somebody out from the US to fix the problem. It seemed to be resolved after that, but then we only had 2 nights to go on our cruise.

Not good if they have to cancel the cruise. They will have some very unhappy people. And some people will have heaps of luggage, given that it is a world cruise, I wonder who pays for excess luggage if they have to cancel the cruise?

Must be getting close to the canal by now.

Interesting to read on Diannes blog of the sand blowing over the ship from the desert.

Also interested to hear they have booked the Cinque Terre tour from Livorno.

We did that tour as a ships tour , as it takes a bit of organising for one day, and it was one of the best tours we have ever taken.

What a difference nowadays. We went through in the late 60s and couldn't go ashore at Aden because of troubles so boats came out to the ship to sell radios, cameras etc to the passengers. We did a tour to the pyramids and Cairo Museum, disembarking at Suez and back on the ship at Port Said. At the pyramids we had a camel ride (I should say run - not good!) then climbed up and into the Great Pyramid, down a narrow passageway into an empty chamber. (Forget what it was.) On to the Cairo Museum where we saw Tutankhamen's gold casket etc then to Port Said which was very noisy and busy. Sad to say I can't remember much about it, but if we are lucky enough to go again, I think I would rather stay on the ship.

I think your visit to the Pyramids must have been in the last century??? :p:p

As for staying onboard - I wanted to see the Pyramids but my wife wanted to stay onboard for the Suez transit. I considered everything very carefully - and decided to do what she wants :confused: Actually, I am quite happy with the decision- we will be able to say that we have seen both canals (Suez and Panama) - and I feel that a 14 hour shore tour , leaving at 4AM with armed Police escort is probably just a tad too much ! There are Eastern Mediterranean cruises that spend a few days in Egypt - will keep the Pyramids for one of them (one day)

OMG, and haha, Barry, it feels like the century before that, sometimes. :D

That is a good map, David. I just had to check up Suez and Port Said - can never remember which is at the top and which is at the bottom - and found that map before my last post. However, I cannot remember how to post them!!! (Last century kicking in again. )

I think thats a great decision. I would have done the same Barry . To experience the canal transit , and soak up all the history that goes with it would be an amazing experience.

Armed police escorts can happen in many ports. We have had that happen in Indonesia and in Dakar. In Dakar though, the busses all lined up with an armarda of police in front. They went ahead with sirens screaming and lights flashing, but it was not so much for security, but rather to clear a path through the chaotic traffic:eek: .

I would be so dissapointed at missing out on the Valley of the Kings:mad:. They would have to offer pretty good compensation to make up for it.

I went to Egypt in 1989 with 2 girlfriends for a month and on one of our trips we went to Mt Sinai, this ment our bus passed through a tunnel under the Canal. It looked amazing to see ships cutting through the desert as we were approaching the Canal and then they sailed over the top of us as we passed through the tunnel.

I would definitately stay on the ship to traverse the canal, one of the great travel experiences.

We went there again in January with my DH and son. We had an absolute ball. My son loved the Egyptian museum (particularly the mummies) and the pyramids. If you have to travel from Ismalia or Alex to Cairo to see the sights it would be a very long day as both are 3 1/2 hours plus one way.

Some lights coming into view from the bridge cam. The map we use shows them half way through the second canal, but that does not tie up with the cam. The map of course is preloaded and only shows scheduled position.

thnks for that guys... was watching all morning seeing a black screen, was out when daylight broke and just arrived home now...they wouldnt be half way through would they

They probably are Joanne. The cam is just showing sea at the moment, but they could be in those "Bitter Lakes".You can see other shipping around them from time to time. I think they then line up in a convoy for the next canal transit up to Port Said.

I am watching with great interest as one of my ambitions is to cruise through the Suez Canal.I have flown over it on my way to Alexandria and I remember seeing the ships queued up to travel through.

I loved Egypt and can only imagine the disappointment at missing out on the Valley of the Kings and Karnak.

Rugbypopsie put me onto the cruiseline Voyages to Antiquity and they have some wonderful cruises to Egypt and the African Continent.

Regards Elaine.
