Boatingmom Posted June 25, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 25, 2010 Background-Our last cruise several years ago my family went with my Mother in Law and Father in Law on Princess. I subsequently booked Carnival for my children, husband and myself with arrangements to cruise with my brother and his family over Easter 2011. At the time, I suggested Grandma and Grandpa accompany us, with the thought that Grandma's aide may be able to join us and help out. GM had more a mobility issue than anything else, but Grandma's health was failing, and because of this grandpa declined. Sadly, Grandma passed away a week and a half ago. We now want to invite Grandpa again to join us however we are concerned Carnival may be to wild for him. Should we invite him now, wait a few months to allow him to grieve or leave things as they are?
FloridaGators Posted June 25, 2010 #2 Share Posted June 25, 2010 I don't believe Carnival will be too "wild". Years ago they did have a rep for being the party ship...but not anymore. What ship were you looking at to book?
firefly333 Posted June 25, 2010 #3 Share Posted June 25, 2010 There was a man celebrating his 91st birthday on board with 3 of his sisters, they all seemed to enjoy the cruise. There is a man who cruises out of NOLA who has cruised Carival over 100 times, lives in a senior home, cruises every month by himself in his wheelchair. Seemed to be getting around and saw him feeding money to the slot machines. He is way over age 90. Lots of seniors Iv seen ... who didnt seem to think it was too wild for them. mamasue Posted June 25, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 25, 2010 Definitely not too wild! DH and I are seniors.... we've been on several cruises. The only unruly behaviour we ever saw was from a very drunk old gentleman! Take Grandpa.... he'll have a great time!
PROCRUISE Posted June 25, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 25, 2010 Suggest, invite, and encourage your grandfather to join all of you on the cruise. I suspect your grandmother's spirit will be there also. Wishing you comfort.
aubreysmom Posted June 25, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 25, 2010 I don't think it will be too "wild." My dad is 82 and did his first Carnival cruise last year :D He and my mom both loved it :) I hope you all have a great time!
islandwannabee Posted June 25, 2010 #7 Share Posted June 25, 2010 For me the Legend is one of the laid back ships, and I think he would have a great time and you should invite him. Cindy
Tbay-eh Posted June 25, 2010 #8 Share Posted June 25, 2010 My Dad passed away at 83 and my Father-in-law at 96 and I dare any one try and keep up with those two when they got going. They enjoyed everything in life, every day bacause as my Dad said "I may not wake up tomorrow". Unless your Dad is a real fudge muffin he will have a good time and have the crew fawning all over him. You are only as old as you let yourself be.
Vettebuf Posted June 25, 2010 #9 Share Posted June 25, 2010 I'm sorry you grandmother passed. Please let your grandfather know that the family would really like him to go on the cruise. It's almost a year from now and with time, he'll heal enough to want to have things to look forward to. As far as cruising on Carnival, my husband is 86 and Carnival is his favorite line. We'll be going on our 22nd cruise in August. 16 of them are Carnival cruises and we have two more Carnival cruises booked for next April and next October. We've met wonderful people on the ships. And we both enjoy the food, the service, the ports, and the entertainment. Our family cruises were especially enjoyable.
Skywench Posted June 25, 2010 #10 Share Posted June 25, 2010 My mom is 72 and cruises with me quite often. Carnival is her favorite. She and I have two more cruises booked together coming up soon.
bankerbabe Posted June 25, 2010 #11 Share Posted June 25, 2010 If Carnival is not too wild for my born-again Christian parents who believe that just about everything fun is a sin, then it won't be too wild for your grandfather. We took them last year and they loved it. Just want to edit this to add that I love my parents very much, they are wonderful people.

He may not be in the frame of mind to think of a cruise now. But that said, definitely invite him! On my last cruise we had with our party a couple who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, so they were 80-ish at least. They had a great time, and we had a great time with them. lillian marie Posted June 25, 2010 #13 Share Posted June 25, 2010 My 82 and 83 yr. old folks enjoyed a CCL cruise. They went to one show and enjoyed the dining room and sitting on their balcony on the ship. They've cruised alot and prefer Holland but had fun on CCL. They just really enjoyed time with the family. It would be great for the grandpa to be included especially after his loss.
katiel53 Posted June 25, 2010 #14 Share Posted June 25, 2010 My dad turned 97 last week and he sails with us on Carnival as well as other lines. He is also widowed, but still has fun with us as his family. Wait a few months and ask him again. If you have the money to put down his deposit do so as the rates will probably go up. If he doesn't want to go, you can cancel and not lose anything. I hope he goes with you as family is so important. Enjoy!
Boatingmom Posted June 26, 2010 Author #15 Share Posted June 26, 2010 Thank you all for your advice and kind words. My Father in Law will be invited. It will be his choice what he wants to do. As mentioned, the cruise is a ways off. 302 days to be exact:DWe had him over for dinner tonight and although greiving, he's doing OK. Hopefully with time he'll get back in the groove and join the adventure. Grandma(my MIL ) wouldnt want it any other way
LRene Posted June 26, 2010 #16 Share Posted June 26, 2010 When my mom died, we invited my 80 yr. old dad to cruise and now he's gone several times. It really gave him something to look forward to (and still does). We've taken him on a few cruise lines and his #1 choice that he requested for the next one in September.....Carnival! :)
MamaParrotHead Posted June 26, 2010 #17 Share Posted June 26, 2010 My 86 year old grandma went with us on our last cruise and had lots of fun. We made it perfectly clear that if she didn't want to run at our fast pace, she could pick and choose to join us when she wanted. So she ended up joining us in 2/4 ports, and on the days we were in port she found a nice cool spot to dig into her novels and nap and take advantage of the quiet ship. She joined us each night for dinner and was anxious to hear about our day and see all the pictures, and especially loved the shows and the casino. :) It worked out GREAT for us. Shelli Posted June 26, 2010 #18 Share Posted June 26, 2010 Don't forget the travel insurance! I'm a big believer in it anyway, but when older folks are involved (or even in the picture at all, like my 92-year-old dad who isn't coming with us), it's even more important. I agree, but I must add to prepare yourself for how much more it is! We found Carnival's travel insurance to be more reasonable for my grandma, even though we go through insuremytrip.com for the rest of the family. CruisefromNY Posted June 26, 2010 #20 Share Posted June 26, 2010 My 86 year old mother has been on several cruises with us. Our next one from Florida will include her (she is living the Good life there and is reluctant to fly anymore). Retires early, but enjoys her time on board My 80ish in laws have sailed a gazillion times, preferred Princess but enjoyed the family cruises on Carnival. My FIL recently passed and my MIL is not ready to "sail alone" yet but we will get her going with us soon. My thoughts are with your family and give him and extra hug for me:) Anna

Not every insurance company will cover the seniors. Need to check for one that does and be prepared for hefty fee's.
CKM Posted June 26, 2010 #22 Share Posted June 26, 2010 My mother is 82 (widow), she has cruised to Alaska and we cruise Carnival practically every October. She has a great time. Mom and as many of her daughters go (she has 6). Once 5 went. Just be patient with during the cruise. He will be slow but just get slow too. My dad never cruised and passed away 9 years ago, since Mom has cruise 5-6 times with one of her kids. She loves to travel and be with people. Take along. Boatingmom Posted June 27, 2010 Author #23 Share Posted June 27, 2010 Thank you all for you kind words. My FIL loved to cruise. Our last one was Carribbean Princess with my MIL before hardening of the arteries and a fractured hip. But we have alot of great memories. I'm going next Easter come hell or high water. Hopefully my FIL will be able to enjoy life again. Glad to here that so many 80 + are enjoying Carnival. Makes me more comfortable suggesting it. Today I invited my girlfriend and her family. The more the merrier:D
Raring to go Posted June 29, 2010 #24 Share Posted June 29, 2010 I am going on the Triumph in September with my parents who are 86 and 84. They love to cruise. The most reasonable insurance price we could find (less than Carnival) was at Squaremouth.com, a site where my husband and I book our travel insurance.
