Can I remove the mandatory on board gratuity charge?

Is it appropriate to tip for drinks? I know a 15% is already added. I apologize if I am number 5,000 asking this question. I really haven't seen it answered. Cruising this Sunday on the Valor.

I actually don't if it's a one-off regular drink. But for a regular bartender, yes, I do, or when they make me a special drink like a bushwacker and they have to find out how to make it, I tip.

Of course you had no problems. The only problem you didn't think of is that you screwed some people out of money as the "behind the scenes"people either didn't get paid or the people you gave cash to had to tip share.

Why make something as easy as auto-tip hard? Some people do want the gratification of "giving" tip for self gratification purposes though.

Regardless of how you tip.....cash or auto.........nothing is shared..it has already been stated on here by some cruise director......I think his name is John........

This is so true. When the auto tip is removed, all cash tips must be turned in. The person who received the tip will get next to nothing of that tip.:(

I just add the tip as part of the cruise fare. It is sad that many premeditate about how to have the tip removed before they step foot on the ship.

Please come back and post correct information. What you have posted is a complete lie.

Believe whatever you want. Cash tips received from passengers that remove the auto tip gets pooled.

That's rubbish. This is not done on Carnival.

Please refrain from posting incorrect information on the Carnival boards.

When I hand the Server an envelope with cash - who is watching him at every moment to see how much I gave him and make sure that he turns it in to the "pool"?

I would like to know who gave you this information, as I don't believe it is correct. If you have a credible source, please post it.

Based on my personal converations with my servers, and comments posted by the CCL Senior Cruise Director John Heald, all cash tips handed directly to an individual go directly to that individual.

Thanks for the OP who posted this thread and to everyone else. You've actually reminded me to pay the gratuities before we get onboard and so it's not removed from our S&S account. So it's now paid and out of the way.

As far as tipping is concerned, I feel the money I paid ahead goes toward the service staff. If they do extra for me, I tip extra!

They have a choice of who and how much they should tip. They as customers made a choice. Carnival gives them this choice. Just because people don't do things the way you do, does not make them wrong.

Just curious, where would one go to check the facts re: how cash tips given directly to a crewmember are handled?

Thanks,

Francie

To bring you up to date. The former commonly held belief was that if the auto-tip was removed the worker was asked WHAT he DID to upset the customer. AND that any cash tip he received had to be turned to pool for all. Host Mach on this board went to John Heald, Carnival's top Cruise Director for verification. John did not address the questioning of workers but flatly stated that ALL cash tips are the individual workers to keep. Regardless if auto-tips were in place or removed. John further stated that no Carnival management person or Carnival Corporation receives a cent from the auto-tips.

Not all are aware of that explanation and hold to the old belief, [i was guilty of the old thinking] AND some others know of a tip procedure on some other cruise line and they extrapolate that procedure to ALL cruise lines when, in fact, no 2 lines do it exactly the same way.

We have always tipped extra. I wouldn't feel right about removing tips. Those people that clean the tables so that I have somewhere clean to sit also deserve tips. Or the ones who wash our dishes....etc etc...

Our waiter in the DR was exceptional on the Liberty along with his assistant so on the last night we came in with an envelope for both of them. They were both VERY happy and it made me happy to see their appreciation. Our waiter talked to use a little about his personal life, talked about his baby back home and always asked up how are day was and what interesting things we did that day. They both always wanted to see any cool photos we took and always remembered what we liked to drink. They both showed us they cared and that makes me want to tip them extra! I'm glad they don't pool them!!

We also tip our cleaning person....even though last time she wasn't that great and wasn't much help when I needed, we still tipped her. :)

I'm looking forward to our next cruise and hoping we get another great waiter! Heck, I should call and ask them to transfer the one from the Liberty for me! Hahaha!! (He's probably not even there anymore).

OH... we even tipped the drink lady in the DR. Every single night she walked around getting everyone's drinks... she knew exactly what we wanted no matter if it was in the DR or past guest party or anywhere else she saw us. Sometimes she'd give us a bigger size free of charge. She definitely deserved an extra tip! What a sweetheart!!

Plan on booking open seating and would like to tip my cabin steward and teh staff who serve me directly. What is Carnivals policy regarding onboard gratuities? Can I/should I have these removed from my onboard account?

Thanks.

When Carnival suggested the auto tip, I had the same idea as the OP. In the end, I agree with most of the post: (1) Why do the pain of finding individuals to tip. (2) I never realized how many people those tips are distributed to (buffet staff, crew that clean the ship, etc.). (3) Carnival will let you increase the tip and change how it is distributed. I thought that the cabin staff were under tipped so I increased it and the overall tip. Just do the auto tip and make adjustments. :D

Because they have so many people duped in this tipping scam they know they can under pay their staff and advertise cheaper prices.

Would that be like most every sit down restaurant in the USA has everyone duped too. And they did it long before the cruise lines did it.

You must be aware that many states ALLOW restaurant workers to be paid WELL BELOW minimum wages because tips make up the bulk of their pay. You HAD to know that! Are you aware that some upscale American restaurants CHARGE the waiters for working there?? NO pay at all, JUST tips.

And you have to know that tipping on cruise ships is both CUSTOMARY and EXPECTED. So if one does not wish to tip on a cruise, the HONORABLE thing for them to do is 1. tell housekeeping that the cabin is NOT to be cleaned for the cruise. 2. See the Maitre D' and inform him that you will not be using the Main Dining Room [and the waiters services] 3. Have the tips removed from your account and eat in the buffet. You'll still be stiffing the buffet workers, but that's only a buck pppd. Maybe one could even spring for that tiny amount.

You are right in part. We pay the tips, Carnival can set cruise prices lower. If it was included in fare, price would be higher. I think many people would be surprised how many remove the tips. People working on ship know this is chance they take when they sign contract. If it was so bad cruiselines would have to change policy.

Sure you *can*

Carnival says you *can*

But like others have said.

The 'auto tips' are divided up among people you dont see as well.

*unless its an issue of not having enough money to leave them on ()

Just leave them and tip extra to those who have made your experience a little better if you choose.

I'm not being sarcastic here, but your comment above:

Well, I never tip anyone that I don't see or has not personally done anything for me. When I go to a restaurant, I tip the waitress, not the janitor who keeps the bathrooms clean, that's just part of doing business.

Where does it end? Do you tip the captain for keeping the ship afloat, or the engineers for fixing any ship problems, on and on. Heck there's an Indian casino where I live and when you go to cash in your winnings you cashed out or on a slot that you lost at, there's a tip jar. Like what the heck did that teller do for me but give me what I either lost or won?

I'm sick of people sticking their hand out because they believe they have a right to other people's money. I'm tightening up even more just because.
