Can anyone confirm this....?

What is the best way to know when the jitney stops runnning at the end of the day?

We are in port 11-10pm. No real need to hurry back to the ship, what is the typoical cost of a taxi back to the ship if the jitney stops running?

Both the Wyndham and Sheraton are part of the Cable Beach Resorts and are sister properties with signing priveleges between them. I've never seen anyone stopped from using the other property except during spring break, when Sheraton does NOT allow spring breakers on the property to party.

As far as jitneys are concerned, there is no way of telling.. they are independently owned and operated. If a driver wants to make a few extra stops, he will.. if dinner is on the table, he'll go home.

Taxi will run about $15 for 2 ppl. $3 for ea. add'l person plus tip.

Most jitneys will stop running around 6-6:30pm.

My family and I were at the Cable Beach Sheraton on 6/30 when there were 6 ships in port. I have to say that the information I learned from reading these boards saved the day. Most people from our ship went to Atlantis, spent a fortune, endured long lines and got shut out of rides for distant lightning. At the Sheraton we had a beautiful and relaxing day without crowds. We took the #10 jitney from the stop in front of McDonalds, its about 2 blocks from the port, locals are happy to direct you. It is a lovely resort and the snorkling is great!:) Thanks Scubagirl and everyone else for caring enough to help us newbies out!:)

O.K... I know this has probably been answered somewhere... but 3boyswrestle... did you grab a room the day you were in port (or was it a day pass?) or make advance reservations? I think Scubagirl mentioned that it wasn't necessary to reserve in advance??

The sheraton at Cable Beach would do the trick.. ($25pp).

There's plenty of great information about the sheraton on this forum...check it out.

No way would I pay to use Atlantis Beach.. even at $60.. that's a stretch..

Please help me decide....we will be porting in Freeport and Nassau in September. I want to hang out on the beach in one and sail/snorkel in the other. Following is where my research has suggested for beach spots. Please let me know your thoughts on which beach is better. Then I'll try to find a decent sail & snorkel trip for the other port. Thanks!

Nassau: Sheraron on Cable Beach and lunch somewhere. Transportation by jitney bus.

Freeport: Reef Village on Our Lacaya and lunch at Billy Joe's Conch Shack. Transportation by cab.

Somebody told me that there is a wonderful public beach right next to the British Colonial Hilton. Does anyone have any experience with it? Surely there must be some public beaches that are decent in Nassau.

Junkanoo Beach, aka Lighthouse Beach, is located just outside of downtown, next to the western side of the British Colonial Hilton. It's got shallow water, beach is a bit rocky, it's not well maintained and there are no lifeguards.

You can find chairs for rent, concession stands and public restrooms. Local vendors hawk whatever they can.. including drugs. But they are not much of a nusance, unless you are alone on the beach.

Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is another public beach. Water is rougher with an undertow and gets deep quickly. No lifeguards or bathrooms. You can rend a chair. no concessions, but locals sell water and rum drinks from a cooler.

Both are popular with the cruise ship crowd.

Other public beaches exist, but they are not maintained, and some are quite dangerous. Some havev sink holes and rip currents, some rusty swing sets and bathrooms closed due to decay. Some have gangs robbing people.

Best to stay in the tourist areas.. and stay with a group.

Junkanoo beach is across the street from the police station. It's relatively safe. (i've been approached by a young man who unzipped his pants and showed me what he wanted to do to me.. yikes)..

As I said.. best to stay with the rest of the tourist.

British Colonial Hilton</SPAN> Nassau Bahamas: $60.00 for day passes includes the use of the beach and pool, which also includes towels, lounge chairs and $30.00 credit that can go towards your food and beverage. Rates are ages 1 – 3 free, and anyone 4 yrs and over will pay full price. You can book in advance by calling the reservation desk (242)322-3301. We are located 10mins (walking) away from port.

I just received (July 12), email from British Colonial Hilton stating "day pay is $55, kids 12 and under 1/2 price; under 5 eat free" and a "$40 food and beverage voucher."

Just thought I'd pass on this update information from manager of Concierge at hotel.

I also received the same email last week ($55 , and $40 food and beverage voucher) from the Concierge manager. It also said that we could purchase the passes on the day we arrive at the front desk.

I am hoping that all these deals are still valid as of December, we will be in Nassau December 9th, this will be my third time in Nassau, and since the cruise ship is in port for sooo long I really just wanted to go to a beach and relax. Thank you for all the information, I took down a few notes, but will probably be back to this thread closer to when we cruise.:):o

We went to the Sheraton at Cable Beach and loved it. $25 for a day pass. I will never go anywhere else for a cruise ship stop in Nassau.

There are 3 pools including swim up, zero entry and a water fall. Two Hot tubs. Plenty of chairs, umbrellas and palapas.. Large clean beach. Bar and grill. Poolside service. Snorkeling gear for snorkeling from the beach. Non-motorized water toys such as trikes, kayaks etc.. as well as awesome restrooms for changing if needed.

There is a Casino that links the Wyndam next door. You can use pools & beaches at both hotleswith paid access at the Sheraton or paid access at the Wyndam. The Wyndam has a very nice water slide.

I preferred the Shearton. We arrived around 9AM and stayed until 3PM. We spend an hour at the Wyndam.

The #10 jitney ($1.25pp) will get you there in 10/15 minutes. The bus is easy to catch right outside the Straw market. It stops right in front of the Sheraton and we waited less than 5 minutes to catch the bus to go back to the straw Market. We wanted to walk around some before heading back to the boat so it was perfect.

Did you book your day passes in advance or when you arrived? Did you guys eat lunch there? Could you tell us how much the food & drinks ranged?

Wow! This thread has exactly what I was trying to figure out on my own. About 10 of my female relatives will be on a cruise and in Nassau for one day at the end of October and were trying to figure out what to do. Thanks for all the good information.

We did not book in advance and the beach was very quiet. I got busier toward the mid afternoon. We also did not eat lunch there. If I had been with my husband, I would have drank, but I was with my 80 year old Mom who needed me to be focused, so I did not drink. The Wyndham has a wonderful full buffet for lunch. I spoke to some people in the hot tub and they loved it, said it was $25 per person. So, if you are interested in Lunch, you may want to do the day pass at the Wyndham for $40, that includes lunch and then the day pass is only $15 more. You can still hang out at the Sheraton if you pay at the Wyndham. We ate a big breakfast on the boat. I brought some Tupperware containers from home and grabbed some banana bread from the breakfast bar. The Sheraton has apples in the lobby. That was really enough for us. After 3 days on the boat eating big, it was nice to eat light. When we got back to the boat we got sushi at the sushi bar. I am told the Wyndham has a nice grill, but that lunch may still run $20. It did not look like there were other restaurants close.

Just wanted to let others know that it is against the law to bring food into the bahamas from the cruiseships. It should be posted on some of the paperwork you get onboard. And, of course, it's noted on the Immigration websites.

The only thing that can be taken off is manufacturer sealed products like soda, chips, bagged cookies etc.. but they must still be sealed. You cannot take bread, cakes, fruit or sandwiches from the ship into this country.

Not scubagirl here, but may be able to help (BTW. .Capt Jay was her boyfriend who passed away recently.. that's a quote from him)

There are a couple of really great snorkel and sail options in Nassau.

Seahorse is one, and Flying cloud is the other.

www.seahorsesailingadventures.com and www.flyingcloud.info

We have done both. Seahorse is a little more crowded, but both have great crews and terrific snorkeling.

You didn't say how long you are in Nassau. You may be able to get some beach time a the Hilton when you get back.

Have a wonderful trip!

thanks for clarifying Tikib.. I should change that signature so it's not so confusing.

As for the post.. you are right on.. seahorse and flying cloud would be my choice.

Thanks for this information. I wondered about how busy these locations were when there are many ships in port and worried that the hotels might sell out of day passes. Good to hear that this was not a problem for you, especially with so many ships there. Thanks for your recommendation.

Thanks, this thread has really helped me:D

I will be on the Liberty in April and read that it missed Grand Turk and went to Nassua in the past. I figured I should come over here and see what my options would be if this happens on my cruise.

Knowing I can get a day pass once on the island to the Sheraton for the day will be great:D

I have made my notes....

We have reserved day passes at BCH for our cruise in Feb.

Our ship does not dock until noon.

At many of the resorts we have been to, there is a rush for chairs at the beach and pool. Arriving at about 1, would we get chairs easily (in the shade!)?

It does sound perfect for what we want!

We have booked through Island Marketing. It still quotes rates of $50 with a $30 food voucher. Has this changed??

Many thanks!

We are also in port from noon until 7:00 pm. Does anyone know if the resort day passes still require you to leave at 5:00? I know it used to be that way. I'm thinking that by the time we get off the ship and get there, it will be 1:00 and wondering if it is worth it for 4 hours.
