mare s. Posted July 10, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 10, 2010 Will we need to get kuna and lira or will euros be widely accepted in each country? I know we can go to atm in each, but would rather have a bit in advance if necessary.
Rare Keith1010 Posted July 10, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 10, 2010 For most items you can use Euros, British Pounds and USA currency in Turkey but if you need to pay admission to a tourist site sometime local currency is required. We found that we could use other currency for most items in Croatia such as Euros. Keith
UKBayern Posted July 10, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 10, 2010 It depends where you are going. Yes, in major tourist places, Euros are accepted, but if you go to less frequently visited places they are normally not. There are plenty of ATMs around in any town in Europe (so also there), should you want to get some local currency. In Dubrovnik, in some places Euros are widely accepted, but in others you need Kuna: for the local bus, the public restrooms, a small bakery shop away from the main drag, etc. We saw people who sat down on a terrace and they just assumed they could pay their coffee in Euro. Only after they drank it and wanted to pay...well, fill in the rest what happened next.... Always ask first... Same in Turkish tourist resorts like Antalya, Izmir or Kusadasi. KirkNC Posted July 10, 2010 #4 Share Posted July 10, 2010 In Turkey you need lira to get in the sites ( though a few will take plastic). You also need lira for the trams. I would not buy lira before you go, there are atm's everywhere. Kirk

But if you intend to travel independently in Istanbul, tourist site admissions (Topkapi, Hagia Sophia in particular) require CASH lira, public transit trams require lira as do most small restaurants food venders. In Dubrovnik, cabs will do euro but the ticket office for 'The Walls' may require kuna - but in both places ATMs proliferate. In fact, Istanbul has more ATMs per mile or block than just about anyplace I've ever been.
