Caribbean or Caribbean? LOL

Was having a conversation and the question popped up as to how you pronounce the word Caribbean.

 

How do you say it? (Phoentically spelled here)

 

1. Care-eh-be-an

 

2. Cure-ib-be-an

Ha ha ha.. I've had this conversation myself.

 

I say cur-ib-e-an when discussing the location but I say Pirates of the Cara-be-an.

I think this debate can only be settled by repeat trials conducted through consistent cruise travel to collect a truly representative sample of the population. I'll volunteer in the name of research...

I've only ever heard it pronounced cari-BEEyan, until I was on a Princess ship in the Caribbean, and heard some passengers pronounce it with the stress on RIB. I've not heard it said that way since. How do Caribbeans pronounce it?

I say it the correct way:p - carr ib ian ( last syllable sounding like the man's name)

 

American pronunciation seems to be car ib eeyan with the middle syllable more pronounced.

 

It doesn't matter really, as long as we all end up in the same place with the same lovely scenery, right?:D

I didn't vote because I pronounce it both ways depending on if I'm speaking about the region as in I'm cruising to the (Ca-rib-ean) or an object that I've purchased as in I purchased some authentic (Carab-ean) artwork.
