Aplmac Posted August 10, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 10, 2010 Can you walk to Bridgetown for good shopping? ===> Yes -about 20 mins. all told. Which NICE beach is closest to the pier? Carlisle Bay is definitely the nicest beach wot's close to your ship, no two ways about that! If you're already walking to the main Bridgetown shopping area (15-20 mins.) you can easily continue, over the bridge (with the arch at its far end) and on to Bay Street another 300 yds. beyond the arch until you come to Boatyard's bright yellow wall and walk just slightly beyond that, where you can access Carlisle Bay for free right next to Lobster Alive. Accra at Rockley is just another 10 mins. by car ..further out and probably worth it. Breezier, for starters.. but you did say 'close'.

CaribbeanH2OLover Posted August 11, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 11, 2010 I reccommend taking a cab to Bridgetown. A 20 minute walk doesn't sound bad until you are doing it in the heat of the day. We tried this "walk" in November with our family and it was not worth it. We are fit people who love to walk and I would spring for a cab ride the next time around. It's only about $2 or $3 per person. We were also approached by locals most of the way which was very uncomfortable. It wasn't like that a few years ago. We were told it was a 7 minute walk, 20 is more like it. Just my two cents. Have fun!

Aplmac Posted August 12, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 12, 2010 Can you walk from Bridgetown to Accra or is a taxi necessary? Walking from Bridgetown to Accra is out of the question-unless you're a mad Australian (private joke, here on the island). You'd be well advised to take a taxi. If you walk from the Port into Bridgetown(conditions allowing) you should find that picking up a Bridgetown taxi after shopping might result in a less-mercenary driver. ................................. In all the islands, the taxi drivers 'descend on' the Ports. It's often a good ploy to wave them away, walk thru and past them to pick up a taxi driver who simply can't be bothered with the competitive cut and thrust of the Port trade! ;) . negn Posted August 17, 2010 #10 Share Posted August 17, 2010 Remember, ""close" to a local may still be quite a distance. Last year my DH wanted to go to see cigars being made. We were told we could see that in Pelican Village. Took the bus and got off at the end in Bridgetown. Asked this little old lady where to go next She said to follow her and she would point the way (if we could keep up with her!) 90 degrees and high humidity plus the walk almost killed these lazy Americans ! Got a taxi back
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 18, 2010 #11 Share Posted August 18, 2010 Can you walk to Bridgetown for good shopping? Taxi costs? Which NICE beach is closest to the pier? Taxi costs? The walk into Bridgetown is about 30 minutes. It is easy to get to from the Cruise Ship Terminal. There are also quite a number of stores at the pier.
