cruise cancelled

Mothballs

Recommended Posts

From my observation there is a lot of disappointment from many passengers who are being disadvantaged by this cancellation, however as I previously added to this post a section of the Booking and Passage terms and conditions, P&O are only acting on their own policies so I can't really see how people can argue with this.

For those who are disadvantaged by potential loss of airfares or accommodation costs, if you were smart enough to take up travel insurance you will not have a problem with getting any out of pocket expenses re-imbursed. If you decided to take up a policy with an excess, that would have been your personal choice.

I believe P&O offering $100 OBC for a future cruise is more than generous seeing they could have offered nothing.

I agree, the P&O fleet are old, but at least a majority of the time we all get enjoyment. If P&O were really as bad as what some on this site make em out to be, why do you continue to cruise with them???

A "Superliner" is a passenger ship classified as more than 10,000 Gross Tons. The definition of superliner has no reflection of the age of a cruise ship.

Again I am very sorry to hear the disappointment of those who are affected by this P&O cancellation, but you just have to move on and understand its part of the terms and conditions when booking with P&O. ;)

I agree with your sentiments, fiat punto (which was the car we hired when last in the UK - we got an upgrade from a Cinquecento, woo hoo).

The superliner advertisement didn't have ME fooled for a minute - and even most of the overseas lines have their old ships from what I've read.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people take holidays and don't bother to do any research beforehand. (Maybe I have too much of an enquiring mind!!! :D I don't believe anything without checking it out.)

Anyway, I hope the cruisers concerned can make up for their disappointment as much as possible. Who knows, something better may await them.

I bet they won't pay for airfares and hotels prebooked and paid for either, no cruiseline will, I have had recent experience of that, with cancelled Costa Cruise in the USA.

$100 obc is better than nothing.

Actually P&O sent us a form when ours was cancelled asking us to give them details and proof of any unrefundable expenses such as airfares...I assume with the intention of sorting it out for us. That being said, ours was cancelled on a Wednesday and we were supposed to leave three days later on the Saturday, so maybe the circumstances were a bit different.

Sorry the cruise got cancelled :( I really do know how much it sucks. At least you guys get enough notice that you can hopefully book something else that's not too far down the track past your original sailing date...we had to wait 4 months as they were booked out all summer. Good luck sorting it out!

We were also able to change the travel date on our insurance so we didn't have to pay it again. I don't know if that's normal or if it's just because I'm friends with the TA, but it might be worth looking into.

They can if they view the policies as unfair. :-)

I suspect many people would be reluctant to cruise, if they fully understood the fine print in cruise company's terms and conditions. Especially as the fine print exemptions in our insurance policies' terms and conditions increase with every passing year.

Then if their policy is unfair in their opinion they would have changed it. People pay their deposit knowing what they are getting themself into and the risk of something like this happening, thats what a good travel insurance policy is for :D

Definitely a lot of gotcha's in there, weighted in the company's favour.

I accept them, knowing they are there to protect the company from people taking advantage of them. But equally if the company uses the wording to take advantage of its customers, it's fine to call them out on it.

with all cruise lines it is said in there terms and conditions that by paying your deposit you are agreeing to there terms, they even say that when you ring them. in saying that it is poor that they can bump any one at any time.

carnival Australian(P&O, Princess) use NSW consumer laws and rules.(This contract is governed by the laws of New South Wales.) this is part of it in there terms. lol NSW consumer laws must be the weekest in Australia.

I love how they advertise The Sun and Dawn Princess as "PREMIUM CRUISING" As if !!!!:o

Unfortunately most folks don't know how good a ship can be till they try one based from the States.

Aussies being ripped off and disappointed again:mad::mad:.

Thats like saying that you would never go to see fireworks in The States after seeing the Sydney Harbour NYE Fireworks (which are renowned for being the best in the world), or

never go to a theme park again because you have been to disneyworld or

never go to a casino because you have been to Vegas

Bigger and newer is not always better. A holiday is what you make it and thank goodness people who dont like our Aussie cruise liners wont sail with them cos you are all a "pack of whingers"

Suggest people whose cruise is cancelled, take the refund and make other arrangements, which suit you personally.

Don't feel rushed and obligated to choose another cruise, with the same cruise line, within a limited timeframe.

You only have to research Cruise Critic to read of people who did and were disappointed.

Any holiday is a "personal" experience -no two holidays will be the same. I find that the people who are most dissatisfied talk about it more, whilst those who enjoy their holidays don't feel the same need to tell about it unless asked. This is true of life in general.

Only you can make up your mind, and whatever you decide, I hope it turns out the best holiday you've had so far. :)

I couldn't agree more with this statement
(quoting Thied - Pack of whingers'!

Thems fighting words ! LOL To be serious, as Lizzy said - Princess cruising in Australia, i.e. Sun Princess is well below the standard of Princess cruising overseas, I can assure you, I have done both.

Please NOTE..I have not mentioned nor rated P&O Australia as I have not cruised with them for many years, just not my style and I am no cruise snob. Just that cruising the Islands as P&O does is not for me (us). Done it once..Fiji, Papeete, Noumea etc, not impressed. Each to his/her own in this democratic society.

I can assure you that every cruise we have been on we have enjoyed and we are definitely not "a pack of wingers" as many great people we have sailed with on these forums would know.

Everyone has a choice on how to best spend their hard earned $'s and unless you have sailed on both Princess Aus and Princess US you would not know the differences, and believe me there are plenty.

Hmmm, that's very true, but I do remember reading that the brand new Norwegian Epic had engine trouble before she was even launched, and also.....Quote:

It has been reported that the ship's arrival into Southampton on Tuesday will be delayed more than seven hours due to a technical issue. The ship is now expected at 5:30 p.m. instead of at 10 a.m. A Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said the problem is a minor technical issue with the propeller shaft. The problem should be repaired in Southampton. The ship was further delayed because the security card system broke down and passengers had to be signed in by hand.Guests on Norwegian Epic’s two-night inaugural cruise on Tuesday from Southampton are now expected to embark at approximately 8:30 p.m. End quote/

IMHO no ship (or aircraft for that matter) is immune from problems, some unfortunately have more than others. :(

Thanks for your words Les. However if we didn't have these old ships Downunder then this cruise would not have been cancelled for "maintenance".

Just because we have old ships does not mean that the rest of the world has it any better. Australians should be great-ful that we have cruise ships deployed from our waters.

03/08/2010 - Jewel Of The Seas: reports the shipis experiencing a mechanical problem that is forcing it to sail at a reduced speed, resulting in changes to its itinerary. One of four hydraulic motors isn't working properly. The speed reduction is relatively minor, and the problem is expected to be fixed within a matter of days. The ship currently is sailing in the Baltic. "We carried out preliminary repairs in Harwich (England) on Saturday," RCCL says. "However, we are awaiting a replacement hydraulic motor and will conduct (further) repairs while the ship is in St. Petersburg, Russia." The ship is scheduled to be in St. Petersburg on Thursday and Friday. Today's call on Visby, Sweden is from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. instead of Stockholm. Wednesday's port call to Helsinki, Finland will remain from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Thursday the ship will arrive in St. Petersburg at 7:30 a.m. and depart on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Repairs are expected to be completed while in St. Petersburg.

26/07/2010 - Emerald Princess: reports the ship left Port Everglades bound for an island in the Bahamas, apparently developing problems at around 6:30 PM, shortly after leaving the port, causing it to operate on half of its power and leaving passengers without air conditioning. Passengers onboard reported that conditions onboard are rough because the air conditioning is not working. The Coast Guard said a computer glitch is to blame. The ship's engines were knocked out momentarily. But the ship's chief engineer has been able to get at least two of those engines up and running, according to the Coast Guard's report. The engineer is working on getting the third engine powered up, officials said. UPDATE: CBS4 reports the problems was resolved by 11:00 PM. The ship skipped its port call at Princess Cays.

01/07/2010 - Fascination (Carnival Cruise Lines): reports lost power Wednesday for several hours and was adrift at sea. Carnival says the ship, which sails out of Jacksonville, Fla., had a "technical malfunction" while on the last leg of a five-day voyage that began on Saturday. Power was restored after several hours and the ship resumed travel to Jacksonville. The ship will arrive at Jacksonville today around 10 a.m., roughly three hours behind schedule. The line says the delay would have been shorter if not for tidal conditions. Embarkation for the ship's next voyage, a four-day cruise to the Bahamas, will be delayed until 1:30 p.m. today, the line says. The voyage is expected to depart on time at approximately 4 p.m., the line says.

You see it aint just "Australian" ships, this kind of thing happens all around the world even on new ships.

I agree any ship new or old can have technical issues, but I was referring to standards in services on board, i.e. food/service/crew/entertaiment. Anyway I am off topic again, so will retire to the bat cave.

MMDown Under, Marion and Barry, sorry about that, I misunderstood your post as well.

Yes, the double cruise is going to be good, the second was a fill in for our cancelled Costa Atlantica cruise FL to Quebec City, they redeployed the ship to the Med, grrrrrrrrrr, don't mention that word Costa to me. Pathetic administration.

Happy cruising.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got this from a weekly online newsletter I recieve.

P&O has apologised to passengers for the cancellation of Pacific Jewel J034, which was due to depart Sydney in November.

The line's newest ship, launched less then a year ago, will be withdrawn from service for eight days to enable the replacement of a key part in one of the ship’s two stabilisers.

The part will be fitted during the period of the cancelled 5 November 2010 South Pacific cruise.

At this stage, the next scheduled cruise is still expected to depart from Sydney on 13

November.

“P&O Cruises has apologised to passengers while giving as much notice as possible for the cancellation,” a P&O spokesperson said.

“Pacific Jewel will enter dry-dock at Garden Island in Sydney on 5 November where the newly manufactured stabiliser part will be fitted,” the spokesperson said.

Passengers affected by the cancellation of the cruise have been offered compensation

in the form of $100 onboard account credit per passenger (aged 13 years and older) for

bookings made on an alternative P&O Cruises’ cruise holiday before 31 March 2011.

Any passengers who choose not to rebook will receive a full refund of their cruise fare

paid and “reasonable out-of-pocket expenses”.

All booked passengers have been informed of the canned cruise by P&O or their travel agents, with the offer to transfer their booking to an alternative cruise.

Passengers were contacted via a call-out, a letter, an email to travel agents, and via the company’s social media channels (facebook.com/pocruises and twitter.com/pocruises).

“Space on other cruises is limited, so we recommend discussing these options with your travel companions as soon as possible to ensure you can book on your preferred cruise,” said P&O’s spokesperson.

“If you choose to transfer to a different cruise and book before 31 March 2011, a credit of $100 per adult (13 years and over) will be added to your onboard account for you to spend during your cruise.”

P&O has assured present and future guests that the Pacific Jewel is “perfectly safe”.

According to the company’s website, the work is on part of one of the stabilisers which reduces the ship’s motions for the comfort of passengers.

Customers who have purchased flights to Sydney will also be assisted, P&O said.

For more information on the cancellation, see P&O or contact your

local travel agent.
