Onboard the Oasis of the Seas (August 21, 2010)

Nope, RCCL doesn't give any category upgrades. Instead, they provide $'s off balcony cabins to Platinum or higher level C&A members (higher status gives more of a discount).

It's not that I don't like an ocean view balcony. DH doesn't care for a balcony whatsoever, so we tend to stay away from them. Plus, we both enjoy people watching, so the PR cabins work out very well for us. We did once get an upgrade to a GS on the Grand Princess with a huge balcony at the aft end of the ship. I loved it. DH wasn't that impressed. :)

Thanks very much for the review it enabled me to relive my cruise on the Oasis last April.

We had a CP balcony and I tend to agree with you regarding how quiet it seems to be but I will say one thing I enjoyed was sitting on the balcony for a few minutes before going to bed (usually around 1:00 AM). The quiet and the beautiful lighting were conducive to relaxing.

All in all I will book an oceanside balcony next time.

I didn't start a roll call thread, but there is one already. You'll see a link to it in my signature (but in case not, here's the roll call thread).

Right... the full remaining price is still due when it comes time to make the final payment. It's just nice to have Royal Caribbean holding on to a smaller deposit until then, especially when you're making a reservation for larger groups.

We didn't choose to make a reservation on board (we booked the Allure cruise during the WOW sale in May), but maybe we'll make another NextCruise booking next year.

Hi Diane!

WOW thats great you are going on Allure too!

I just called last week and booked. I had 3 next cruise booking certificates to use that I had from booking last year on Enchantment. The Oasis week

flew by so quickly, I thought I have to do it again so why not Allure!

Sunday, Day 2

What can I say, but I'm enjoying another day onboard the Oasis of the Seas.

We had a casual breakfast at Johnny Rockets this morning. It had rained last night, so the Boardwalk was wet and they were using big squeegees to move the pools of water to the drains. The food was decent, nothing exceptional. I had a basic breakfast sandwich (fried egg, cheddar cheese, and bacon). I did find that the "country potatoes" were rather uninspiring, but they did taste much better salted and with some bacon, too.

After that, it was down to the casino for our free pulls from the Gold member coupon books. Both pulls went very quickly without any reward. I tried a few slot machines and found them to be exceptionally tight. Even when I did find that I got a bonus round, after eight free spins, I still got $0. We played the coin pushers, too, and found them to be far more enjoyable (the money lasted much longer) and we even ended up winning some as we did manage to push over a few $20 bills that were near the edge. That was fun.

Then it was on to the Meet & Mingle. There was a decent crowd there, perhaps around 50 or so. Pinky, a member of the entertainment staff, hosted the gathering and ran the giveaway. She was very perky and lively. Afterward, a bunch went off to the cabin crawl, but we ventured off in search of lunch. After all, it had been at least an hour since we last ate!

I did have the pleasure of meeting a few people I knew from the forums here including Rosebud1g and fllisa. I wish I had met more of you, but I was feeling a bit shy at the moment, I guess.*

Barry (DH) was kind enough to go pick up the Live the Oasis book. I haven't had a chance to give it a good look, but he tells me that it looks like there's some good stuff in there.

I haven't had a chance to take any more pictures today as I left the battery charging this morning. More picture-taking later, I guess.*

A note to iPad users. I'm a bit concerned about the WiFi access. I need to check that my usage is working out right. On a normal laptop, connecting to the ship's WiFi pops up a window where you can explicitly disconnect from the network. It didn't pop up on the iPad from what I could see, so I just turned off the WiFi. I guess we'll see how that worked out the next time I connect.

Oh, and here's a surprise that just happened. We just got a delivery of a bottle of La Terre Chardonnay from our TA. How nice! In all of the cruises we've been on, we've never gotten a gift from our TA before. I'm looking forward to enjoying the wine!*

Hi there,

1. Was Dazzles for the meet & mingle non-smoking (I'm allergic to smoke)?

2. Were there any crew from the Oasis (the Cruise Director or the Captain)?

3. Did the meet & mingle provide you with any gift?

Thanks!

I think that Dazzles is non-smoking in general (as I never noticed any smoke when I went in there a couple times in the evenings). During the Meet & Mingle, it seemed to be non-smoking as well. Either that or I just didn't notice it.

2. Were there any crew from the Oasis (the Cruise Director or the Captain)?

There were a couple members from the Entertainment staff (one of the Hairspray dancers, if I remember correctly, and someone else). Neither the Cruise Director nor any of his direct staff were there.

3. Did the meet & mingle provide you with any gift?

Yeah, if you can call it that. It's a Royal Caribbean-branded, little notebook/pen that you can hang around your neck.

They also had some raffle giveaways, but nothing exceptionally fantastic. A couple copies of the Oasis of the Seas art book, some office products (paper clips and such... go figure!), hats, that sort of thing.

Dazzles is a two-story venue and the upstairs is the smoking section. My daughter and I inadvertantly wandered into the upper deck of Dazzles one night and nearly gagged from the smoke! When you are downstairs you'd never know there was so much smoke upstairs, so it is a pretty effective system of keeping the smoke away from the non-smokers! Dazzles is a beautiful venue upstairs AND downstairs. Just make sure you are on the level you want to be on! ;)

Hi Bonnie Voyager - Thanks for the info, I'll stay clear of the upstairs and hope the meet and mingle is down below!

We booked connecting PR-L cabins. (It's very strange that the Oasis class ships don't have two PR cabins that connect.) I think we got the PR for $1259/person (whatever price it is now; it hasn't changed) and the L for $1069/person (it's gone up a bit since we booked back in May). All in all, it ends up being ever so slightly cheaper than our pair of CV cabins (at $1199/person). I'm sure we'll enjoy the view from the Promenade cabin much more than we did with the Central Park view. We had Promenade cabins on the Liberty of the Seas and absolutely loved them, so I'm happy to be getting one again.

Daghis, Do you have any pictures of these rooms (7197 and 7195)? My family is booked in these same ones in May.

Thanks in advance.

Yup, I do, at least for our cabin (7197 — I don't have any of the connecting category-L 7195)! (I should note for consistency of this thread that these are views on the Allure of the Seas from our cruise in 2011.) Here are a couple views of the cabin:

And here are some views through the window down onto the Royal Promenade:

Great! I assume that the connecting door must be opposite from the bathroom.

For anyone who may be interested, I've scanned and uploaded all of the Cruise Compasses, daily specials, as well as other information that we received during our cruise.

You can find it at https://public.me.com/daghis (they're in the "Oasis of the Seas - Western Caribbean - August 21, 2010" folder).

Have never been lucky enough to been on a roll call with you but must tell you how many threads I have read of you and how enjoyable and worthwhle they have been.

Is it possible for you to direct me to a review on Oasis or any cruise you have done on Alaska so I can pick up more valuable hints and things not to miss. You should give up your day job and just start writing cruise manuals. Sincere thanks

Thank you very much for your very kind words! I really appreciate hearing that!

This is the only thread I have related to my cruise on the Oasis of the Seas. I haven't sailed on her since, instead having sailed on the Allure of the Seas and the Freedom of the Seas (linked to the live threads I did for those cruises). I've never sailed in Alaska, so I'm sorry to say that I have nothing to offer you for that.
