Belize Walking Tour

The Swing bridge, the lighthouse St John's and the Culture house are interesting if you enjoy history and a nice walk. The Handicraft Center is what some call the small flea market. Rest of the stuff is just what you'll have to walkby, not a must see IMO. I've walked most of the streets on the tour. very safe. It'll take you about 2 hours depending on how fast you walk and how long you stay at the culture house.

We don't have a planned excursion for our day in Belize. I came across this website that has a walking tour. http://www.belize-vacation.com/belize/belize_city.htm

Has anyone done anything like this, or something similar? Anything that is for sure a must-see, or a don't-waste-your-time?

Thanks!

Those look like they are quite a distance from each other. Is this a guided tour? Where they will drive you sight to sight? Or does the map just make it look like they are far from each other.

I'm not sure I would feel comfortable out on my own just walking around. Just me I guess.

Good Luck on whatever it is you decide to do...where still trying to decide ourselves.

I looked on Google Maps because I thought the same thing. The distance from the Tourism Village to St. John's is a little less than a mile. As long as I don't have to jog, we should make it there and back just fine.

But are the streets in that area safe to walk? That is one of my fears.

Think I need to really research this one....Thanks

The maijor Streets on the walking tour are safe to walk. Albert, Regent, Fort Street, MArine Parade, Cork. Queen street is safe but narrow and lots of traffic and narrow to no sidewalks a couple of blocks past the swing bridge. You will run into the hawkers for carriage rides and other tours that lurk outside the Tourism Village. They can be aggressive, but it's their livelihood. And they aren't threatening or out to steal your purse. Easiest way to avoid them is to go out the furtherest right entrance of the Tourism Village, turn rigth immediately and walk toward the light house. Then hea dup Cork Street/North Front to teh swing bridge. When you return, either retrance your steps or just hug the right sidewalk and duck into the first entrance to the Tourisim Village which is the entrance for the Wet Lizard, IIRC. That'll by pass most of the hawkers.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME! Stay in tourist village(cheap beer and nice shops) or even on ship ,or go to tubing (I would not go with lokals on this island only Cruise tour),Bliz City is very poor and not safe.we took horse carrage ride and it was most ugly excursion we ever had on carribean.Do not take more than 100$ with you and dont have any jewels or watch.

As far as local tours we did cavetubing.com adn glad we didnt listen to the ship crew, they want to keep you in the tourist village cause they make money from it. When they tell you belize is unsafe they really mean to say, stay in the village so we can make money! The locals need your money so get out and have funa dn stop being scared of everything. You cannot get a feel of belize in the cruise port! Youll have to venture out!

I guess some people just dont understand other cultures. lol

I live in chattanooga tennesee and I can assure you there are way worse places here adn I can assure you there are where you live too. Remember fear comes from not understanding. There is nothing to fear there really other than your normal caution you should have anywhere you travel! I felt more unsafe on the cruise ship at times than at any of the ports even mexico and yes EVEN BELIZE!

P.S. when you live so near the coast the weather can reack havoc to buildings especially a poor country. also poor does not equel unsafe. If the buildings look bad does that mean youll get mugged? lol NOPE! usually the rough looking places in other countires are the places you need to go to learn about the real place! in Barcelona you go down dark scary alleys to get to great restaraunts and never did I feel unsafe! Seriously I felt more unsafe on board in the casino!

OK we've researched Belize, its like any other poor city have you ever been to Brooklyn, NY Ghetto area, its worse then the worst part of Belize City, you wouldn't walk the streets in poor areas in the states after dark, so then why would you do it in a poor countries ghetto area. We have intentions of walking to the Lighthouse from the tourist village then to the swing bridge- has anyone ever taken this walk before? What is the best directions? .I know, to get to the light house walk out of the west gate up the road a bit to the light house, oh yeah and the Belize sign Then what?? Does BC have any fast food places like Mickie D's? What does Brodies sell?

Belize is a country devoted to Eco-tourism, protecting the natural environment of the jungle, the wildlife, and ocean cays and reefs. It boggles my mind that people don't want to do excursions there, to see what the people are so proud of and protect.

Brodies sells a little bit of every thing. It's more a a general department store. Buy your Marie Shrap hot sauce there.

As far as getting to the swing bridge from the lighthouse/Belize Sign, either turn around and walk back past the cruise port up Fort/Front Street to Queen Street and it's on your left. OR..continue on up Marine Parade with its promenade by the sea, to Goal Lane (3rd street on left past the park on your left) then take Goal to Eve St, then left to Queen Street and head straight.

Nope sorry no US fast food joints in Belize (thanks be to god). There is a sub/pizza place along Front street near the water taxis before the swing bridge. How good it is I can't tell you as I avoided it at all costs.

might be best you just stay on the ship. Others will tell you about it when they get back.

I think Belize city used to have a subway but is is closed. Things like fast food and all inclusives really have no place in Belize.

Thank you for letting me know about the fast food junk stops, the fact that there isn't any. But what is the best place to stop for something to eat, keeping my American appitite in mind. Now as far as walking back from the Bliss Lighthouse to the swing bridge, am I wrong by assuming (there is that word again) that I should walk back on fort street past the Tourist village to Front street to the swing bridge* I am confused as to Queen street didn't see that on my map, where do I pickup queen street? Are there any special places I should stop along the way? How long should I allow ourselves for this walk? Should we walk all the way to the end of Albert where it meets Regent or should we turn sooner and if I turn sooner will I miss anything?

Well, you do realize your talking to someone who posted 7 years ago, right? Belize has come a long way but back then it had a very bad reputation that has somewhat improved recently, but still got to watch where you're going:eek:

Sp of I am walking to the sign and lighthouse its ok right? If I am walking from the lighthouse back on Fort behind the tourist village to front to swing is that alright? Now once I am on Albert and regal back over the bridge to front back to village that should also be OK right? That will be the extent of my walk there. I think that walk should be OK right?

As a matter of fact, Belize is probably the most tourist friendly, English speaking country in Central America. English is their official language and there are thousands of US expats living there. Sure you hear about some people getting kidnapped or killed, I can think of 2 in the past several years...but there's almost one or 2 killed in my neck of the woods every night???

If you don't trust Belize City, take a tour to one of the outer islands, great fun!

Becci Yes but God Bless America there are at least that many killed in most major Towns and cities in in the states every night and day as well...Folks this is not stated so to scare you away from touring Belize, I have done my research and if you don't go out looking for trouble, by staying out of the less inviting areas, then it should be OK, question is where is the uninvited areas you might ask, well if you are reading this then you have a computer, ask google...or wait for someone to reply here. Anyway we plan on walking the streets of Belize to take in their culture.
