smoking policy

We are considering this cruise line and are wondering if smoking is allowed in any of the public areas or cabins, I hope not!

If you want a ship with absolutely no smoking you might have to rent your own yacht. Most lines have smoking areas. Carnival tried a non smoking ship, it didn't work, remember you have your views, but others have their. I think we all need to learn to consider each others differences. (i am a non smoker I will add) except in the casino/

Now, to answer your question: smoking is allowed in cabins, but I have never heard of anyone who was bothered with a tobacco smell from X occupants of a cabin. I don't know what is done, but never have we smelled any smoke on any ship except HAL.

yes, there are some public areas where smoking is permitted, but only a couple: 1 side of the ship outdoors and usually 1 bar plus the casino. Even in the casino most ships have a non smoking area.

Since smoking is allowed in the cabins and balconies, there are occassional posts that complain about secondary smoke from their balcony neighbors. If you are across the hall or next to a smoker in another cabin, you may get a whif in the hall way whenever they open their door.

I think NCL does a great job of clearing the smoke smell from a previously occupied cabin.

My big complaint is on those ships where the normal passageway to the therater is through the casino...I just take a deep breath and hold it all the way through the casino.

Celebrity has very restrictive smoking policies and some of the best sale prices.

Maybe that's why they have the sale prices....they've lost most of their smokers! Have fun on Celebrity! I know I don't care if they are giving the cruise away I won't be sailing with them.

I think NCL does everything possible to mitigate the smoke smell. However, we've smelled smoke more than once....once when the next cabin over smoked on their balcony and it blew into ours and into our cabin if we left the door open. So we couldn't use our balcony sometimes and just kept the door closed. Then....the really bad was on the Pearl....someone in a suite must have just stayed in their suite and smoked up a storm for 14 days because the hallway reeked and the smell would carry into adjacent cabin bathroom vents so when sitting on the "potty" with the glass door pulled shut, the area could be permeated with smoke. NCL staff tried various measures, but it was beyond their control. We were NOT happy campers. Not mad at NCL but furious at the inconsiderate and filthy behavior of other passengers.

Did you ask your room steward for help? I wonder if they can do something for the smell during the cruise, not just before the new passengers start arriving.

I do not smoke and I do not like smoke, but I know what NCL's rules are and I choose to sail on them knowing my neighbors may be smokers. They are not breaking any rules. So I would not feel complaining on my part would be in order. We all have to live in this world together. If smoking was a deal-breaker I'd choose another line like Celebrity.

I'd view this exactly the other way around. I'd be mad at NCL because it is their rules that allowed this to happen. I wouldn't be especially mad at the other passengers since their behavior was arguably within the scope of those rules.

  • 3 months later...

We just finished our first cruise on the Pearl. The Casino smelled like smoke but it seemed to be well ventilated so it wasn't overwhelming. The only time I was really bothered by smoke was sitting outside a few tables away from a guy smoking a cigar. We were in port so there wasn't much wind and the smell was nauseating.

I can't comment on the balcony issue as we only had a window. Once in a while I would catch a whiff in a hallway but it wasn't very often or strong.

If I choose to cruise with NCL I know I may be in a cabin that was occupied by passengers who were smokers. That being said, in 5 cruises on NCL I've never had a cabin that wasn't fresh and clean smelling. Some people are more sensitive to smoke than others and I understand the complaints. If the smoke isn't in my face I'm OK with it. I'm an ex-smoker...heart attack 6 years ago. Life is much simpler not to mention less expensive.

If the cruise line cannot control the air quality in my room then you should not be allowed to smoke.

You'd probably have an easier time convincing NCL to give you a different cabin than getting them to tell a passenger that their are changing the smoking policy on an ad hoc basis.

Maybe one day cruise lines will follow the lead of hotels and offer smoking and non-smoking cabins. Seems an easy way to satisfy the needs of both.

I am not normally bothered by smoking in the cabins as long as my cabin does not smell of smoke (as it once did on HAL.) However, last month on the Jade, the smell of smoke was so bad in the hall outside our cabin, that DD who is allergic to smoke would start choking on the way to/from our cabin. And the casino reeked of smoke even when closed.

If you are concerned about smelling smoke from other cabins while on your balcony or in your cabin, book a forward room. The smoke smell tends to travel to the back of the ship.

Also, make sure that your room is not in close proximity to the casino.

It's not so much the smell of smoke that bothers me, but a safety issue.

We're not allowed to keep an iron in our cabins, because a hot iron could possibly ignite bedding or carpeting, if it falls upon them. Wouldn't it be the same outcome from a lit tobacco ash? If an ash hits that material----WOOSH----Fire.

You read about so many house fires started by careless smoking. Scary.

I wish that smoking would not be allowed in cabins at all. Confine it to an outside deck area. I am a former smoker, so I understand.

Let's hope that it doesn't take a cabin fire on a ship to get them to change the policy. I agree..it should be limited to outside decks and maybe the casino. When I smoked I often stayed in hotels in non-smoking rooms and it was never an issue. I went somewhere else to smoke.

Yes this is always my cruise nightmare...fire! I was so happy when Celebrity stopped the smoking in cabins, I felt safer that some intoxicated smoker would not fall asleep while lit up. However standing on my aft balcony on Century, a smoker from the Lido tossed a lit cigarette in my hair!

Mad at NCL? Why? Nobody pressgangs you to sail NCL. It's no good complaining about their policies that's the way it is. No point getting mad at smokers either, so long as they smoke where it's allowed.
