Grand princess condition?

Just got back from the same TA cruise. I realized there was a problem when the high wind blew the sliding glass door completely off the track and into the stateroom late at night. The maintenance guys did confirm it happened in more staterooms.

I am sure the Grand Princess cheerleaders will not consider that so bad but it really isn't a pleasant thing or very safe.

It's only a door and why worry about it, it's not yours.

Passenger’s Logue Grand Princesse Aruba

No lunch service in the dinning room today due to the loss of power needed to cook the food. Horizon Court not affected.

Jacuzzi closed due to a water colour best described as burnt umber.

We were on the Iceland crossing also and were very pleased with the condition of the ship.

We heard that the ship was going in for refurbishment and also that it was the first of the "super ships", with possibly older equipment (mainly shafts instead of pods).

But Captain Roger seemed to be able to make the ship do anything needed, as far as docking and recovering launches in the wind (with the help of a tug Lerwick-but we have been on the QM2 when a tug has been used-and when one should have been used!)

The interior was somewhat dated, but in a good way: felt comfortable: I really enjoyed the decor of the 5th deck and 7th deck Grand Lobby bars.

And speaking of bars: (and everywhere: dinner, rooms) I thought the staff was outstanding: they seemed to go out of their way to be happy!

Every bar tender knew my drink automatically after the second day: much more than I can say for some other ships I have drunk on!

I have noticed that everyone complains about the temperature. in our office, in my car, on trains, at home: if you live in Florida 70 degrees F is freezing, if you are used to Akureyri, 30 degrees F is warm, except when in a volcano pool. The magic word is "layers".

After reading this thread I am amazed at the comments on the condition of the GRAND. When on your balcony, don't you folks take in the vista? Apparently not for some of you....rust spots are more important than where you are and what you can see? Rust spots do not a cruise make. We are booked on the GRAND for the Caribbean Collection Cruise in late March, 2011. We call this cruise the 3peat as this is our 3rd cruise on the GRAND with this same 14-day venue. Crew, venue, food, view, have been wonderful, and the ship has a better design than Princess' newer ones, RUBY, and EMERALD which we have experienced. So, those who are consumed with ship deficiencies might want to refocus on the bigger picture. Enough!

If you're located forward of the elevators you won't notice a thing except maybe a little more motion from waves but during the day there's a lot of foot traffic going from the elevators to the aft pools during the day.

I also noticed that on the port side when the doors opened to the hallway leading to the elevators that this being the smoking side of the ship it sucked in all the smoke into the hallway. I don't know if this was a problem in those rooms or not since we were located forward of the elevator bank & didn't experience any problem.

We were in a balcony cabin on Lido deck. Enjoyed our cabin - except the noise from the gym which was directly overhead. Weights crashed to the floor (our ceiling) several times during our cruise - once jarring us awake in the early a.m. (and well before the posted hours for the gym). It didn't ruin our cruise, but I will be careful to not book a cabin under the gym again :) We loved the location otherwise. No more movement than anywhere else that I noticed. Didn't hear any noise from the hallway.

Upon completion of the inauguration of the Jacuzzi elevator, the ship introduced us to the new passenger game entitled Casino Elevator. At any given deck at the bank of four elevators, one commences for example by pressing and illuminating the DOWN button found on the port side of the ship. Then, when another passenger on the starboard side presses and illuminates the UP button, the port call light is extinguished and your elevator call cancelled. Reactivating the DOWN call button on the port side will of course cancel your opponent’s UP call on the starboard side. Both competitors repeat this several times, each with more gusto and determination.

Then the two competing passengers turn and face one anther striking a stance reminiscent of that in “High Noon”, each pressing, holding and illuminating their respective buttons. This position is held until the eventual arrival of an elevator, any elevator. The separating doors will usually reveal what can best be described to some as the contents of a very prolific family’s crypt with little or no room for their 82 year old and similarly weighted Aunt Helen.

Needless to say that the carpets on the stairwells are currently taking a beating by those who are apt and able to use them, one’s button opponent hopefully being among them.

When an ascending and less than totally booked elevator does arrive we note that its passengers have activated and illuminated decks 9 and 12. To this we add and activate deck 14. Upon arrival at deck 8, our parting doors reveal a teary eyed woman exhibiting the look of a just rescued isle stranded sailor. She eagerly enters and immediately presses the button for deck 5. This action nullifies and cancels all call buttons and respective lights for decks 9, 12 and 14. Immediately and rapidly we descend without stop to deck five. It should be pointed out that this woman who is sporting her cruise card strung about her neck is not even an Elite.

The whimpering man standing at the controls of the elevator and who has obviously been the recipient of this continuous shuttle service now angrily threatens all aboard should any of us even touch the control panel before he is delivered to his destination. His post is then taken over by a more jovial man at the controls who greets each and every entering passenger with “Ladies and Gentlemen, place your bets”. As the doors close he utters the customary croupier’s call of “No more bets please, no more bets” as we ascend or descend into the unknown.

Addendum to the power failure:

Those affected and occupying an inside stateroom have been advising those of us of “Balcony Blight” that we truly have no concept of the word dark…

ONT-CA - absolutely hysterical and oh, so true! One can only hope that the replacement of the elevators are on the priority list of the April refit!

From recent accounts and our own experience on the Grand's recent TA, this old lady is way overdue for a serious overhaul.

We think it would be somewhat unfair of us to leave this subject with our negative if not poignant critique of the Grand and her rebellious elevators as we found her last week.

What the white overalls could not rectify in the correction of this rampant mechanical anarchy, the gentlemen in kaki certainly could. We boarded a unit heading southward only to find not one but four so uniformed officers putting the beast through it’s paces pushing each and every button and verifying that she would respond to their every command.

Because previously few could actually verify just what deck they had attained, their total suspicion and disbelief has now not only been nullified by the recorded announcement of the deck number actually found outside the sliding doors, but now this announcement is being repeated equally loud and clear for the skeptics and non-believers.

In addition we see much maintenance occurring here and about and now feel that the Grand will be found in better shape for the upcoming cruise than as found for that of ours. Perhaps Cruise Critic is actually being read?

we also were on the Grand for the TA that ended in Ft Lauderdale on 11 October. Yes, there were minor carpet problems, minor rust issues, etc, as previously stated. However, there were only two issues we really had that haven't been previously addressed here. One was the fact that the mattresses in the cabins are REALLY ready to be replaced. The second was that smoke from the casino and one bar kept drifting into the Princess theater due to doors on floor six at entrances to the Princess theater that would not stay closed. Other than that, the food was good, service was good, the new production show is NOISY but good, the ship rode well in fairly heavy seas, and we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise. Maybe the fact that a VERY high percentage of the passengers were platinum or elite (at least 50%) has lead to the litany of complaints here. We're now considering a January Carribean cruise on the Grand, before her overhaul. A "bad" day on a cruise versus the best day at work?? Hmmmm, let me think.....
