How comfortable are you leaving electronics in your room?

Our first time cruise is coming up and I was wondering if your stuff was ever messed with? We have ipods, cameras, camcorders, jewelry.. and I'm just a little concerned about leaving stuff out.

I'm sure the room steward wouldn't steal anything but do you hide your things when your not using them?

Thanks!

The cabins do have room safes. I try not to leave expensive "anything" around. I totally trust the room stewards, but people passing by when they're cleaning the rooms -- I don't trust them to ignore stuff within easy reach.

I don't bring expensive jewelry I've got costume "bling" that looks nice (unless you get close) that, if I lose it, I won't be devastated. But even then, anything I'm not wearing is in the safe..as well as a camera I'm not using, or my Kindle, or...whatever.

Your attendant doesn't have TIME to mess with your stuff. Cash, credit cards and jewelry should go into your safe, along with expensive cameras and other, small electronics. If you bring a laptop, and are fearful of theft, lock it into your suitcase....nothing will be bothered, even if you leave it out.

Hubby once "lost" his diamond wedding band....room attendant found it and left it for us (with a little note!) so we wouldn't "freak out"....

Your stuff will be safe.

Camera is too big for safe. Never had a problem with anything in our room. The DW once lost her camera. Went to lost and found and there it was. Even after describing it, they had to look at a picture on it of us before they handed it over. Moral of the story, always take pictures of yourself:D

I don't bring expensive jewelry either. Might leave it behind, might lose it, might have to convince customs that I owned it when I left the country.

I don't lock away cameras and Ipods, etc, but I do put them in the closet or drawers. When the steward is cleaning the room the door is sometimes open and others can see in. I wouldn't want to tempt anyone or have the steward blamed, or lose my valuable.

This is my practice as well.

On my most recent cruise, my roomie & I put our cellphones and our money in the safe; we also managed to fit her netbook in there (just barely!). On occasion, though, she just put her netbook in the desk drawer. My camera went into a drawer as well.

I do trust my cabin attendant, but don't want to tempt passersby if the steward leaves the door open while cleaning.

We make it a habit to use the room safe for all things that will fit, usually just jewelry (we bring good jewelry, like to wear it, and it stays safe in safe), wallets, money, cell phone, passports, etc.

I also bring a 35mm camera in a large case with extra lenses, that is difficult to hide somewhere. When we first arrive at the stateroom, we see our attendant, introduce ourselves, and make him aware of the large camera case that we keep in one of the drawers. I ask the attendant to please not leave our door propped open if they have to walk away from the room for some supplies or whatever.

In addition to my request, I hand the attendant a $10 bill, and say thank you. I have to tell you, in the last several years of cruising, we have never lost anything from our room and have never returned to our stateroom to find the door propped open and the attendant not inside.

At the end of the cruise we, of course, give our stateroom attendant additional gratuity based on their week of service.

We keep passports, casino chips and any small thing of value in the safe, but, in our experience, there is never a worry about the cabin steward or any other ship personnel. Someone else wandering in while the steward is cleaning, in my view, is next to impossible due to the size of the cabins and the attention by the steward. They are the ones who stand to lose if you lose. Example> Last year on Princess, my son and daughter in laws first cruise, they discovered that the sheets on the bed were soiled. They told their room steward. He apologized and said it would be attended to. Within five minutes the cabin was full of people. All in white uniforms with epilets on the shoulders. One was the Captain himself. The steward had informed his superior about the problem even tho it could cost him his job. What do you think the response would have been if it had been a camera, computer or jewelry? By the way - - - they gave them a $100 ship credit for their trouble.

You asked about electronics only in your post, so I will keep my reply to just electronics and not money/passports that others are replying to.

Anything that is small (cell phone/IPod/small camera), I try not to leave it just on the dresser table in plain sight as it’s too easy for any passerby to take and hide it. You can easily store those in your luggage/in the drawers or in the closet when you are away from the cabin.

We also have bigger items like dSLR and laptops, the camera always goes inside the closet when we are not taking that with us. The laptop typically is plugged into the wall charger and closed when we walk out.

Knock on wood, so far no issues on any passersby taking the laptop. That’s the only thing “visible” from anyone looking inside from the hallway.

Guess it also depends on how your cabin is configured. If nobody can see anything other than the bed when they walk through with the cabin door open, your electronics are less visible to the possible thieves.
