Carnival Fire

From the latest info on the Carnival web site, that sailing has been canceled as the ship is struggling to make it back to Long Beach (sailing at 2 knots per the latest report). In theory, the next several sailings will be in jeopardy if they have to dry dock the ship for repairs.

That could have impact on RCI folks reading this board as some out of town cruisers already booked on Carnival the remainder of this month may decide to book with RCI on the Mariner instead as a last minute emergency switch - especially the out ot town folks with paid airfare to west coast.

"Guests are being provided with bottled water and food items"

I found that statement interesting! I would certainly HOPE they are feeding people while they make it to port! Of course, I'm not sure I want to know what "food items" are. ;)

I am interested in a fire on board any ship. It is something we all fear.

All of us on CC are like a big family and some of them may be on that ship.

I am glad to read that everyone is alright and that help is standing by if needed.

Thank you for the link. ;)

Good point, I didn't even think of that.

B/c I thought people might find it an interesting story. Many of us on the Royal board, me included, also sail Carnival but do not frequent the Carnival board.

I also do not frequent the CCL board.

Thanx for posting it.

I can only imagine how heartbroken the cruisers are onboard and the atmosphere. I hope they are providing more to drink that bottle water. That is when the rum runners come in handy!!! I bet those are some popular folks if they aren't serving liquor onboard.

I couldn't imagine either if I had an upcoming cruise. The suspense after all the months of planning, etc. I was reading on their board and my heart went out to those that had weddings planned on board (as one bride said, we booked the wedding onboard so we didn't have to worry about ports being cancelled, etc.).

And now they are saying potential to port at Ensenada and bus over the border to Long Beach. EEK. Definitely not something I would want to have to go through (and no, I am not wanting to start a passport discussion).

I find it scary that there aren't any current passengers posting on CC. That sounds like the satellite tower cannot be powered. Ugh!

I agree with most of the Posters.......any incident with any line is news to all......not just one brand.

We were driving home last night from Our Oasis trip that we just got off of on Saturday ( via a quick trip to our house in Palm Springs ) driving home up PCH and watched both the Splendor and the Mariner as they were off the coast of Huntington beach.......Saying I guess the Splendor will have to be our new Ship once RCCL leaves in the next couple of months. I hope all is well with the passengers and crew. I wonder since Mariner is pretty close to the Spendor on the way down if she was notified and possibly started her way to help. We can see both ships when they leave and come in from the house so i will see tonight where they are and possibly walk across PCH to see if i can see her.

Very SCARY!!!!

Wow, scary indeed!

I do, however, think that The Splendor has been cursed from the beginning, kinda like the Carnival Destiny, sad!

Robin, it was an engine room fire...again nothing to do with smoking on board.

###

I know that now - just read the story. I hadn't read it when I posted! :o Even though it was not smoking that caused it - it still freaks me out to see folks half butting out their cigarettes in the casino, leaving their burning cigs in ashtrays that are filled with everything other than ashes, and watching these ashtrays smolder.......makes me nervous......

I am NOT trying to start a smoking debate here.....believe me. I'm just stating what makes me fearful!

Just saw this new update.

Update on Carnival Splendor

Posted on 08 November 2010

Miami, FL — November 8, 2010 (9 pm EST) — At approximately 6 am this morning (U.S. Pacific Standard Time), a fire was detected in the aft engine room aboard the cruise ship Carnival Splendor. The fire has been extinguished. There were no injuries to guests or crew.

The ship has been operating on auxiliary generators throughout the day and engineers have been unable to restore additional power to the vessel. As a result, the current voyage is being terminated. Tugboats are currently en route to the ship which is located off the coast of Mexico, approximately 150 miles south of San Diego. The tugs will tow the vessel to Ensenada, Mexico in an effort to get the guests home as quickly as possible.

Currently several key hotel systems, including air conditioning, hot food service, flushing toilets and telephones are not available. The ship’s crew is actively working to restore partial services.

Regular announcements apprising guests of the situation began at approximately 6.30 am. Guests were initially asked to move from their cabins to the ship’s upper open deck areas. At this time, guests have access to their cabins and are able to move about the ship. Bottled water and cold food items are being provided.

The vessel’s command is in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard which has deployed aircraft and cutters to the cruise ship’s location.

Guests on the current voyage will be receiving a full refund along with reimbursement for transportation costs. Additionally, they will receive a complimentary future cruise equal to the amount paid for this voyage.

“We know this has been an extremely trying situation for our guests and we sincerely thank them for their patience. Conditions on board the ship are very challenging and we sincerely apologize for the discomfort and inconvenience our guests are currently enduring. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority and we are working to get our guests home as quickly as possible,” said Gerry Cahill, president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines.

Carnival Splendor was on the first leg of a seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise that departed yesterday, Nov. 7, from Long Beach, Calif. Today was a scheduled day at sea. The ship’s normal itinerary includes stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The ship, which measures 113,000 gross registered tons and first entered service in July 2008, is carrying 3,299 guests and 1167 crew.

That isn't a bad deal - basically two free cruises plus travel home and one AMAZING story to tell. Of course, wonder if some onboard might give up cruising.

I was thinking the same thing as some other posters - alcoholic drinks - wonder if they are serving? Of couse, with no working bathroom - I probably wouldn't be drinking anything anyways.

Two free cruises is the only sufficient compensation for having to deal with that "smell". ICK! I bet the open air decks are packed!
