ChaylaT Posted November 8, 2010 #1 Share Posted November 8, 2010 Just read on yahoo.com that the Carnival Splendor caught fire today. They didn't say much else. A fire in the engine room. Crazy!

True Texan Posted November 8, 2010 #6 Share Posted November 8, 2010 That's the ship John Heald is CD for. He stated on Facebook that he hoped this sailing would be a quite, incident free trip, but very few are. Boy was he right !
welldone60 Posted November 8, 2010 #7 Share Posted November 8, 2010 And John Heald posted on his facebook page that he hoped this would be an "uneventful cruise". Seems every cruise since he has been on the Splendor, something strange happens.
big_duck Posted November 8, 2010 #8 Share Posted November 8, 2010 So far only one news source is reporting. Ironic that this should occur a day after they had a Coast Guard inspection.
Unknotted Posted November 8, 2010 #9 Share Posted November 8, 2010 OK, I know it's NOT funny and maybe I am a sicko, but I still had to stiffle a laugh when I read that 2 passengers and 1 crew member had panic attacks. **I wonder if the crew member was the Captain...or John Heald...hmmm?**
jetskier Posted November 8, 2010 #10 Share Posted November 8, 2010 Having a reflash is not good. Hopefully everyone was at a safe distance when it occurred. Dave
jkbec1 Posted November 8, 2010 #11 Share Posted November 8, 2010 The story was picked up by a Miami TV station, but is was just a reprint of the original story. Nothing from the LA Times. So the question, is do they try and continue the cruise or do they come back home?

TinyG Posted November 8, 2010 #13 Share Posted November 8, 2010 The Daily Breeze is our local paper. I e-mailed them that it leaves on a Sunday to Sunday cruises. She fixed it.

TheSailinSOB Posted November 8, 2010 #16 Share Posted November 8, 2010 I think it's legit. He hasn't posted on Facebook in awhile. Maybe his crazy 2012 doomsday freak sabotaged the engine room  Hopefully all will be ok.
Sargent_Schultz Posted November 8, 2010 #17 Share Posted November 8, 2010 The Coast Guard is sending two cutters to the scene to assist, the 225-foot-long Aspen out of San Francisco and the 110-foot Edisto out of San Diego, Dunphy says. http://news.travel.aol.com/2010/11/08/carnival-splendor-catches-fire-off-mexico-ship-in-limbo/ Sounds like it is pretty dead in the water... crazy cajun Posted November 8, 2010 #20 Share Posted November 8, 2010 If they have asked for assisstance from the USCG then they are probably operating at a minimum emergency power. No ac Probably no kitchen. Just minimum lighting , propulsion and the bridge up and running. More than likely if they are able to navigate they are heading back to home port.:(

But isn't this where someone is required to remind that it's all "still better than a day at work"????

More than likely if they are able to navigate they are heading back to home port.:( Sounds like they only have one emergency generator running which would power some lights and maybe some elevators. Hopefully the toilets. I'm thinking no propulsion and just drifting. That the A/C is probably off. I've been on ships that have lost power and there is a eerie, yet peaceful, silence. It is amazing how much noise a cruise ship generates.

Koiman1 Posted November 8, 2010 #24 Share Posted November 8, 2010 OH NO. I'm on this ship in December. I would think that it will be fixed after a couple of weeks. Well let's think something positive for John here. He can have a early vacation home to see his DW.:D
Rare shof515 Posted November 8, 2010 #25 Share Posted November 8, 2010 at least they where close to land and not hundreds of miles off the coast where it will take the USCG hours to get to them
