All this talk about passports, seriously does anyone really think in this type of situation the U.S. citizens won't be allowed to return home?

My US passport was stolen in a burglary here in Belize. I went to get a replacement with no I D. After a few questions I was told I would get a new passport.

I am sure, if I was at the border, I would be fine. And under this circumstance, they know the what to expect as far as passports. They will be ready.

I just saw another article on this on news.google.com...looks like the passengers will be getting a full refund/reimbursement plus transportation costs plus a free future cruise of equal value. That is awesome for them and I hope they all make it back home to where they need to go safely. It must not be very fun to have a much planned for vacation ruined like that and I am guessing the refund/future free cruise will help make it a bit bearable.

I just realized the crew will probably miss out on a week's worth of tips...I hope Carnival takes care of them too! I'm sure they are all working super hard right now :(

On CNN they say that the passengers can get to their rooms, have cold water and the toilets are working. All good things. There is no phone service. Cold food on the way. It will take a day to tow to Ensenada and then bus passengers to Long Beach. The Spirit does it all the time to San Diego, not quite as large a scale but it works.

On compensation Carnival seems to be doing what they can, refund fare, air, hotels and future cruise as well.

I was in a flooded and no ac cabin on the Destiny long ago and was compensated nicely. Moved to a dry cabin, still no ac but they gave us 1/2 back on our fare (for 2 out of seven days) and comped our bar tab. lol we had no idea thy were going to do that! Plus gave a 50 % off a future cruise, so we did a 14 day panama canal. got my moneys worth.

I am so thankful that no one was hurt on the Carnival Splendor. Hope she is repaired soon.

We are platinum Carnival Cruisers and will be on Carnival Magic b2b Oct 16 & 28 2011 Europe and TA 28 days woo hoo

I did a little research...

From ICE (Philly office): Assuming the passengers disembark in Mexico and Mexico customs clears them, passengers without passports will be subject to additional screening at the border. Depending on the number of people this could take several hours overall. They could not confirm if extra agents would be provided when the buses would be expected to arrive, but this is likely, and it is also likely passengers without passports will be grouped on specific vehicles to avoid delaying the larger group. Some form of bonded bus would also be an option assuming the ICE office that will be handling this agrees, however that would require ICE officials to be present at the port, which may or may not be arrangeable.

They have a program in Vancouver to assist passengers disembarking and traveling to Seattle with same day flights. It's called USDirect and passengers are brought through a secured area, board the busses and brought to the airport in Seattle. Their luggage is trucked to the airport separately. They are actually not considered to be in Canada at all and have no contact with border security, they are considered to be in transit.

It's possible that something similar could be put into place for this transfer also.

Speaking of the crew, I wonder if those supplies, spam and bread are going to be for the crew during the 10 day trip back to port for fixing? Its weird, you think cruise ship, you think massive amounts of food they bring. Unless they actually refill the ship in a Mexico port as it probably would be cheaper so maybe they are not full of food departing?

And this was in 2008...cant imagine what its like now. We have a motorhome and so wanted to do a trip to that area but no way would I do it now.

I think we need our president to do something about this and secure the border better. Its bad in Arizona and Texas too.

We too have a motorhome and would love to drive into mx. but you would go in a caravan with others. Never alone. I have read if you carried playboys and some wine boxes for there bribes you were ok. But now they would probably rob you and steal the motorhome, unless its older maybe, like ours. But I wouldn't do it now either which is a shame.

FROM MSNBC - (my apologies if this has already been posted)

SAN DIEGO — Navy helicopters shuttled in supplies Tuesday to 4,500 passengers and crew members expected to remain stranded on a disabled cruise ship off the coast of Mexico at least through Wednesday night.

Mexican seagoing tugboats were expected to reach the Carnival Splendor on Tuesday afternoon to begin the slow process of towing it to the Mexican port of Ensenada. Passengers will be bused back to California from there.

The ship, which left from Long Beach on Sunday, was 200 miles south of San Diego when an engine room fire cut its power early Monday, according to a statement from Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines. It began drifting off the coast of northern Baja California.

Monty Mathisen, of the New York-based publication Cruise Industry News, called the fire a freak accident.

"This stuff does not happen, I mean once in a blue moon," he said. "The ships have to be safe, if not the market will collapse."

The last major accident on a cruise ship was when one sank in a Greek harbor in 2007 after hitting rocks. No one was hurt.

The 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crew members aboard the Splendor were not hurt either and the fire was put out in the generator's compartment, but the 952-foot Mexican Riveria-bound ship had no air conditioning, hot water or telephone service. Cell phone and Internet service were knocked out because of the loss of power, preventing families from communicating with their loved ones

Toni Sweet, of San Pedro, Calif., was frustrated Tuesday after relentlessly calling the cell phone of her cousin on board and getting no answer.

"We know everything is fine, but we're just worried," Sweet said. "She was nervous about going on a cruise ship even before this happened and now with this, I don't think she'll ever go again."

Carnival spokeswoman Joyce Oliva said the ship's command has been able to communicate with outsiders on a backup system.

After the fire, passengers were first asked to move from their cabins to the ship's upper deck, but eventually allowed to go back to their rooms.

Bottled water and cold food were provided, and the ship's auxiliary power allowed for toilets and cold running water.

On Tuesday, U.S. sailors loaded cargo planes with boxes of crab meat, croissants and other items for the stranded passengers. They were to be ferried to an aircraft carrier at sea, where helicopters will pick them up and drop them on the ship.

The tugboats were expected to arrive back at the port with the ship around 8 p.m. PST Wednesday, Coast Guard Petty Officer Kevin Metcalf said. Metcalf said the tugs, which will be escorted by a Coast Guard cutter, must move slowly because the ship is so big.

From Ensenada, passengers will be driven 50 miles by bus to the California border, said Oliva, who added that she was unaware of any safety concerns from passengers or their families about traveling by land in Mexico.

Ensenada Port Capt. Carlos Carrillo said some bus companies that normally work with cruise ships docked in Ensenada already take passengers to the border.

"I don't think it will be much trouble to get the passengers to the border," he said.

Carnival Corp.'s stock was down about 1 percent Tuesday.

Mathisen commended the cruise line for its handling of the situation, saying officials responded quickly and were providing informationBut he said the accident deals another blow to the industry, which already has been hurting from a drop in trips to Mexico because of the country's drug violenceIt also will be costly for Carnival, which is refunding passengers, offering vouchers for future cruises and may have to dry dock the ship if the damage is extensive.

Once passengers are dropped off, the Splendor will be towed back to Long Beach, Calif., a journey that will take days. That's why the passengers will be dropped off in Mexico first.

"We know this has been an extremely trying situation for our guests and we sincerely thank them for their patience," Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in the statement. "Conditions on board the ship are very challenging and we sincerely apologize for the discomfort and inconvenience our guests are currently enduring."

Associated Press writers Elliot Spagat, Olga R. Rodriguez in Mexico City, and Carson Walker in Phoenix also contributed to this report.

when i was on the glory behind the fun tour, one of the people from the beverage dept told us it was cheaper to purchase drinks in FL and then truck to NY then load up onto the ship instead of finding a local NY distributor (which i think they will also have to pay state tax on too)

Vancouver is a little different. While they do not contact border security directly, ICE was involved in the setup of the area and oversees its operation along with Canadian customs.

To do so in Mexico would require at minimum ICE approval of the quarantine process at the port and along the route. I don't think they would be able to pull that together in time, nor is it really needed.

It's possible that something similar could be put into place for this transfer also.

It would be great and it would be smart to do something like that. Anything to make this easier on the already harried passengers and crew.

:(But they can't cook it on the ship! It has to consumed cold - double blech!

With the delivery supplies, i wonder if the NAVY gave the ship some camping cooking equipment so they can provide hot means instead of just cold meals such as propane grills and other portable cook tops

What would you do just sit and watch the water? Casinos closed....more then likely bars closed.....no hot food......they can't run the filter in the pools......seriously what is there to do on this free cruise? Not to mention people are using vacation days which will not be refunded......

Doing nothing sounds like a great vacation to me. It is a welcomed respite from 14 hour work days.

To cook for 4,000 people? That's hot. The people aren't going to starve. Geez. Maybe they should ship in generators to open the casino while they are at it.

Kel, your post may end up being deleted. Copying and pasting of articles is against board rules due to copyright issues. You can paste the link to the article or a short quote, but posting the article is a no no. It may slip by here, but usually they get poofed.
