sky_blu_eyz Posted December 11, 2010 Author #27 Share Posted December 11, 2010 Ok, it's settled. I will have Carnival punch a hole in them and attatch them to the retractable clip thingys we have. I will still get the pouches, just for coming on and off the ship so we can put our DL's in there too. Thank you all so very much for all the helpful information. serene56 Posted December 11, 2010 #28 Share Posted December 11, 2010 After you "bing" in for your cruise, head straight to guest relations in that same lobby area, ask for a hole punch to your card. Put it on your lanyard hook and you are good to go. This can also be done in the casino when it opens, but this way you are one step ahead of the game!!! Happy Sailing. the guest service line will be huge when you get onboard- with people placing cash on their accounts, getting room keys, switching around cabins. Tbay-eh Posted December 11, 2010 #29 Share Posted December 11, 2010 A bit of advice - do not wear your lanyard into port. Points you out as a tourist/cruiser and easy mark just as crocs/socks/fanny pack do. I am in no way saying that you are going to be robbed or mugged but you will be targeted for sales pitches etc. Mind you - I thnk we all stand out no matter what ports we hit. suebee53 Posted December 11, 2010 #30 Share Posted December 11, 2010 The open decks tend to be windy and we've had the wind catch our lanyards a few times and blow the card out of the plastic sleeve. I also saw someone else lose theirs overboard that way. YIKES!!! . . . This puts into perspective my loss of a freshly empty RumRunner flask as we sailed away from Cozumel the other day! marshhawk Posted December 12, 2010 #31 Share Posted December 12, 2010 I bought a package of two great card holders at Office depot. I use one for work and the other for cruising. It has a clear plastic front, so the bar keeps do not have to take the card out, there is room for another card behind it, and a small zipper holder I use for cash. My hubby calls it my "slave tag" as I sometimes forget to take it off after work,( there it holds my work ID and my starbucks card.) I really do enjoy them. misguidedangel Posted December 12, 2010 #32 Share Posted December 12, 2010 The S&S card is the size of a standard credit card. The coily one that the casino gives out is good, I generally will wear it around my wrist by twisting it. It works very well. I really don't sdee people wearing it that way, but a lot wear it around their neck, not for me, so wrist will do just fine. One disadvantage of a lanyard with plastic holder is you always have to take it out of the holder to open the cabin door, for many purchases, and to get on and off the ship. If you want to know where you can get the card holders cheap (pack of 5)--Walmart. They are not thick/heavy, but they are adequate. Now most companies have ID cards and many will have card holders, so if your company uses them, just get one from them and take it with you....... uffdafla Posted December 13, 2010 #37 Share Posted December 13, 2010 my dw uses both. depending on the event were doing at the time. The lanyard with tidy pouch, she sticks the "my name is" faces it outward. Another thing, she puts her past guest pins on the ribbon.

I assumed blindrid was talking about the gift shop lanyard where you slide your card in to a plastic case. As you say the ghetto lanyard are give away free in the casino. And are called lanyards by the staff. Originally Posted by blindrid Not at all times. A couple of week ago, they did not have lanyards but the coily things that slots players use. JoeMissile Posted December 13, 2010 #41 Share Posted December 13, 2010 One cruiser’s opinion: Buy a cheap lanyard, I get ‘em for 99 cents at a sporting goods store, different colors too. Pack it in your carry on. Get a hole punched directly in your SS card. Often this can be done when you get the card, or at the GS desk. Better yet, find one of the overzealous packers that frequent this board, borrow their hole punch! Use them over, after a while they get a character all their own, (bleached out a little, a bit of rust, etc). Nothing says “experienced cruiser” like a used lanyard. I wouldn't get a protector pouch, what are you protecting? It’s a cheap piece of plastic that’s essentially garbage after the cruise. As others have remarked pouches can fail, plus you use the SS card all the time (drinks, going ashore, drinks, buying pictures, drinks, etc.). If ya want to “scrapbook” it (ha!), any scratches you get add character and you can make up a story (e.g. I was being chased by a wild boar with a monkey on it’s back! and he stole my SS card! Thankfully security grabbed it when the monkey tried to board the ship) See you on Lido!
soozles Posted December 13, 2010 #42 Share Posted December 13, 2010 I can't believe a thread on lanyards is already on 3 pages. I just wanted to be included in on the awesomeness, even though I have nothing to contribute. Just for the record, I never wear lanyards. Reminds me too much of being at the hospital where I have to wear my ID around my neck. I'm on vacation, I don't want anything that reminds me of work. I just carry a wristlet so that I can also carry my chapstick and camera with my card.
near the beach Posted December 14, 2010 #43 Share Posted December 14, 2010 We usually use whatever free lanyard is given at the casino. We have our Sail and Sign cards punched there also. We try to get one of each color. That makes it easier to know which card is which. So we don’t have to take two seconds to read them. I also at times use an older card holder that we got from Carnival a while back. It is one of the clear plastic card holders. I know I have to take the card out when I need to use it. The main reason I use this one is when I carry soda or drink coupons. ;) I put them in the holder with the card.

Actually, while reading this I was thinking about one of our first cruises. Lots of people were wearing their cards attached to something around their neck....and my DH said, "none of these people must work for a living. The last thing I want is an ID card around my neck like I have to wear for work while I am on vacation."
blindrid Posted December 14, 2010 #45 Share Posted December 14, 2010 The coily things that slots players use are the laynards .. they go around your neck if you want to wear them. They are not lanyards. Lanyards are designed to wear around your neck like referees wear to hold their whistle. The coily things are designed to attach to your belt loop (clip on the end) and still reach the slot machine. That doesn't mean you can't hook it and wear it around your neck though - even though it looks like s***.
donaldsc Posted December 14, 2010 #46 Share Posted December 14, 2010 I would like a retractable one and would like to protect it in the clear sheath as I have been known to be a little clumsy at times when eating/drinking. I don't want to spill anything on my card. Thanks again for the replies. If you get it dirty, just go to the front desk and get a new one. They are free. arpie05 Posted December 16, 2010 #50 Share Posted December 16, 2010 I do not have to wear a badge at work though there are those in our office that wear the coil things around their wrist with their keys... I like wearing the Lanyard and it's nice for my son because he doesn't lose his sail and sign card. And when you set it down in your room your card doesn't get lost (AMONG all the paper scraps/advertisements in the Funtimes). Be careful if you pack a hole punch because I got stopped by TSA (YES!) because of it's size - they held it up to a wall measure and it barely passed... I said "it's a hole punch" incase they thought it was scissors. I don't think I could do very much damage to a plane with a hole punch! Can you make a bomb with one or inflict any personal harm to someone? A plastic fork seems more deadly. I will say that most people as we were waiting to board and before sailaway were very envious of our Lanyards and I could have made a fortune! Everyone kept asking where we got them.
