bzv143 Posted December 15, 2010 #1 Share Posted December 15, 2010 Going on the Noordam Christmas cruise next week and want to bring a small gift for our room steward(ess). Can anyone tell me if they are male or female? We will be on Deck 6 in an SY midship. Thanks! :)
RuthC Posted December 15, 2010 #2 Share Posted December 15, 2010 Male. HAL has only in recent years started to employ any female Indonesians. They have not been hired for cabin work as of yet. Perhaps in the future?

bzv143 Posted December 15, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted December 15, 2010 Matters, Boytjie, because I would not want to give a frilly girl present to a male steward! :p

Anyways, I think they would appreciate cash more than anything else :)
IRL_Joanie Posted December 15, 2010 #6 Share Posted December 15, 2010 Male. HAL has only in recent years started to employ any female Indonesians. They have not been hired for cabin work as of yet. Perhaps in the future? Ruth, we had 2 Female Stateroom Stewards, that I know of on Nieuw Amsterdam 2 weeks ago. Very nice and personable women. Krazy Kruizers Posted December 15, 2010 #7 Share Posted December 15, 2010 The Nieuw Amsterdam has female employees in all departments -- including stewardesses working in the cabins. I would imagine that this new practice will soon spread to the other ships.

Also, HAL has always had female stewards (bi-gendered term) cleaning/restocking the public female washrooms onboard!:)
Randyk47 Posted December 15, 2010 #9 Share Posted December 15, 2010 Interestingly we thought that there are actually fewer females in service positions on HAL lately than there were when we first started with them back in the early 90's. Our first two HAL cruises were on the Ryndam, just a couple years apart, and the wait staff in the Crow's Nest and a couple of other bars were at least half female. Haven't seen that since 2004. treasure4two Posted December 15, 2010 #10 Share Posted December 15, 2010 What I found very interesting on the Noordam this summer and not sure if it is this way on all the HAL ships, but any in one postion, like the casino, the servers in the dining room, whether male or female, is all the same nationality. Our waiter told us that is one reason he really likes working on the Noordam(and probably all HAL) is that by having people from his country working with him, the language and their upbringing is compatible and they understand each other better. With all the hours they work, that has to make things a little nicer and easier for them.
terigo Posted December 15, 2010 #11 Share Posted December 15, 2010 The most appreciated gift is cash.... they have very little room to store things, and would be too polite to tell you that your gift, though well-intentioned, is more of a bother than a boon.... So no worry about gender, keep it green.
RuthC Posted December 15, 2010 #12 Share Posted December 15, 2010 Also, HAL has always had female stewards (bi-gendered term) cleaning/restocking the public female washrooms onboard!:) Always? Hardly. It is only the last few years that females have been added to the HAL ship crew. I am glad to hear that their employment has been extended to the cabins. :) This is brand new, and, as far as I'm concerned, welcome. I love the touch the women give to the public restrooms. I'll be happy to see it in my cabin, too.

Yes, yes ... green and white paper with pictures of dead presidents. One size fits all ... and it won't cramp the crew quarters.
