johjohjus Posted January 2, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 2, 2011 Instead of taking a laptop I was wondering if princess would allow Internet minutes use of computers to download pics and burn a cd? Anyone have any info about this?
chipmaster Posted January 2, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 2, 2011 All pc's on the ship are locked down with only monitor, keyboard and mouse accessible by users. Risk for things from other IO devices are just to great. FWIW the internet is also dreadfully slow as its satellite and more like dailup for speed and also has long latency times. Instead of taking a laptop I was wondering if princess would allow Internet minutes use of computers to download pics and burn a cd? Anyone have any info about this? Talisker92 Posted January 3, 2011 #5 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Also, I bought a CD of our tubing in Ocho Rios and was afraid it might get trashed somehow. So I took it to the photo shop and they only charged 35 cents per print, which I thought was very reasonable.
paul929207 Posted January 3, 2011 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Princess is trying to avoid getting viruses on their computers. You have no access to any drive. That includes hard drive(s), disc drives, & USB ports.
caribill Posted January 3, 2011 #7 Share Posted January 3, 2011 The photo gallery has a station where one may do this (for a fee, of course). Most people these days use memory cards that exceed the limited capacity of a CD. Thuis, most people these days burn their pictures to a DVD, an option that the photo gallery does not offer. Pam in CA Posted January 3, 2011 #8 Share Posted January 3, 2011 Downloading or uploading photos using the ship's Internet, whether using your own laptop or not, is a huge bandwidth hog. I'll be excrutiatingly slow not just for you but will slow down the Internet for everyone else using the Internet. Depending on the size of the file, it very well might not even download or upload. You'll use not just Internet minutes but it possibly hours. Not a good idea.
paul929207 Posted January 3, 2011 #9 Share Posted January 3, 2011 I would think that uploading a memory stick of pictures would probably cost more than buying a new stick

I don't know why they couldn't burn them to a DVD also.
1 HappyCruiser Posted January 3, 2011 #11 Share Posted January 3, 2011 They have an option to burn them to a CD. I don't know why they couldn't burn them to a DVD also. Why should they when they can charge you 6 times more to save the same amount of data. :p The only competitive thing I've ever seen in the photo dept is the printing of pictures.
