Jay, pls keep me updated on the weather conditions as Cil's daughter will be flying out Monday. We are trying to get 4 more people to join a van going to G & M around 11:30 for lunch. I know you'll be working but what about Carla???

Bonnie, thanks. Stupid offhand remark on my part. I HAVE sailed Carnival and had such a bad experience I didn't cruise again for 7 years! I do cruise other lines and have 35 sailings on other lines includng ones owned by CCL but my heart is with X!

Gail, Forecast for Monday is partly cloudy and windy. High 57F. Winds WSW at 20 to 30 mph. Would love to join you for lunch at G&M but Carla and I are both working tomorrow. Jay

Thank you for those who have not felt I'm some huge drama queen.

I think the problem that some find is not that you're a drama queen, but that you hijacked Gail's thread of her onboard experience. Perhaps you shoud have started a separate thread with your experience on the sailing. I sympathize with your problems, however if sounds as if you were not healthy enough to travel in the first place. Perhaps you should have not checked out of the hospital against doctors wishes.

Mercury February 5, 2011 Day Nine

The end for some, a new beginning for us! We bid goodbye to Jackie but the rest of us are anxious to start the final Mercury cruise or as I like to call it, The Ode To Saints Cruise. You know, St Thomas, St Maarten, etc, etc. There should be some great beaches and some warm water in our future. And since we are still hearing about snow in various parts of the US we who are staying on for the next cruise are thankful!

Back to today. This morning we had our last Elite Breakfast until Tuesday. Our ‘extra’ was a winner! Fresh, warm doughnuts with chocolate icing or vanilla icing with sprinkles! So good! OMG do we love Chef Walter!!

We went to the Crew Show at 10. Word of warning, if you want to go, go early as it was standing room only. The talent was amazing! And of course Stewart was hysterical! His miming of testing the toilet water was priceless!

Eleven was the Captain’s Club wine tasting. Can you believe I got a glass of moldy red?

Doesn’t happen much but I do know what it smells and tastes like. We sampled two red and two white. Took about 45 minutes.

Then we went to lunch in the dining room. Not a real great menu although I had to go out and the pasta looked better than it sounded on the menu. Roger and I had Nagasaki (sorry its not spelled right) while Cil had a hot dog and fries. Dessert was pretty good. A choice of Bread and Butter Pudding or Caramel Nut Brownie Sundae.

By 1 PM I had enjoyed three Mimosas, four wine samples and a heavy lunch. You guessed it – nap time! Or at least reading time. Got up at 3, cleaned out the old paper work from this cruise to make room for a whole stack of new stuff and went up to the last Elite Cocktail hour for this cruise.

Even though we are staying on, there were still lots of people to say goodbye to! Old friends, new friends and some crew members who are leaving tomorrow. So glad we are staying on to close the ship. This will leave us more fond memories of ships we’ve lost. Horizon was devastating, Zenith was a kick in the gut and Mercury will just be sad, very, very sad.

Jackie is singing in a 7:30 Karaoke so we have pushed dinner to 8:30. With two and a half hours before dinner we decided to go get a slice of pizza. It was fresh, hot and very good so we each ended up having two slices.

I came back to my cabin for a quick shower and a change of clothes for dinner. Barely made to the Navigator in time to see Jackie sing The Heart Of Rock and Roll. She’s even better than I remembered. Too bad this was only the second Karaoke for this cruise and this one was at a weird time. It’s usually 10 or 10:30 like the first one was. Then they limited this one to an hour. Some people got to sing a second song but not many.

Dinner with my favorite X waiter, Mario and his assistant, Maja (pronounced Mya) has been a joy this entire cruise. We are looking forward to being with them, at the same table, for the next cruise.

Dinner:

Fresh Fruit w/Minted Coconut Milk

Antipasti Platter

Marinated Snapper Escabeche

Roasted Vegetables and Goat Cheese Crostini

Vegetable Soup w/Noodles

Cream of Cauliflower

Tropical Gazpacho

Mesclun Greens , Cherry Tomatoes with Grapes and Raisin Salad

Romaine, Radicchio and Cucumber Salad

Rigatoni Prosciutto Crudo

Corvina Souffle (JoAn had this but didn’t eat it)

Shrimp Scampi (Roger and Jackie had this and liked it)

Chicken Chiquita

Glazed Pork Loin (Cil and I had this and it was very good)

Mediterranean Phyllo Tart

We celebrated Jackie’s birthday tonight so dessert was birthday cake and ice cream. Nothing like chocolate to finish off a meal!

The ship has quieted down tonight. Luggage has filled the halls and people are standing in line at guest relations to straighten out bills. Everyone getting off in the morning is looking a little harried. We, of course, are basking in the realization that none of this applies to us because we are B2B’ers!! Yea!

Looking forward to meeting those of you coming onboard tomorrow that I don’t know and seeing some old friends I have sailed with before. I hear Baltimore will be in the high 50’s with some gusting winds. That’s better than the freezing rain we got thrown at us when we embarked for this cruise on Feb 5th. In any case you’ll make it onboard as we take off on one last, memorable journey on our old friend, The Mercury!

Bye For Now!

Hey Ruth! Good to see you on here!

Ditto to richsea!

Choochoocruiser, thanks for the weather update! We came up two people short to get the transport to G & M! Bummer.

Texed, she's still on board and will do another full show before she leaves. I plan to see that one.

I am confused about one thing from the poster who is not having a great time here. I haven't talked to anyone (and those who know me, know I talk to A LOT of people, passengers, crew, staff and officers) so far who is really upset with their new assignments. Sure, one or two were hoping to go where the girlfriend/boyfriend are but most seem, if not 'over the moon' then okay with where they are going.

Going to bed now. Ship is settling down. Only one guy at Guest Relations, line has gone. I expect we will be into Baltimore early since we have been in the Bay for a while.

B2B'ers are meeting at 9:30 to go off and then return to ship. Have no idea how many there are of us but could be quite a few.

See you all soon!

Gail, thank you so much for the updates!! And I agree with you completely richsea, perhaps a new thread would have been better. For those of us that love the Mercury and her amazing crew, but are unable to be there for the final voyages, we are living vicariously through Gail!

I took my final voyage on the Mercury a few weeks ago and had an amazing experience. This was my 36th cruise and 8th time on the Mercury.

Gail, it is a pleasure to read about the amazing crew that make the Mercury so wonderful. Jacque, the Guest Relations Manager, and her team are truly very special people. I've had the pleasure of sailing with her and several of her team member (Christina, Judith, Karol, Peter, and Nell) many times and they always go above and beyond to take care of the guests. I know I will see them on other ships in the fleet, but it will be sad to never be together again on the Mercury.

When I was on the Mercury a few weeks ago, many of the crew were getting their new assignments and I never heard anyone complaining either.

Thanks again Gail and I look forward to reading your posts during the next twelve days. Enjoy your time!!!! Wish I could be there with you for one last cruise on my favorite ship!!!

If ya’ll remember my last cruise (in the same cabin) I had a little trouble with my Cabin Steward. This trip I have Cecep and his asst Daniel. They could not be better! Always trying to do something extra for me. I’ve had great CS’s before and these two are right up there!

Gail- Reading your posts bring back such good recent memories.... thank you.

Cecep is the BEST! My daughter and I had him (and quiet but also good Daniel) on the Jan 3 Mercury cruise. Yes, he is up there with the best of them! Always always asking what he could do to make our experience better...perfect...!

He was especially good (and tolerant) because my daughter would often sleep late, so he kept having to put off doing our cabin until he knew she was finally up and out! What an awesome attitude... always happy and smiling and accommodating. I think he is going to the Summit???

Please -- give him a fond 'hello' from Ms Lee and Miss Liz! we hope to cross paths with him again some day!

Karen Granger was on the Eclipse...really fun... hope you got to catch her show afterall.

And also, if you have the chance, tell Oliver Holland (the pianist) that mother/daughter Lee and Liz also send our best...(He had his eye on my tall, slim & curvy, lovely girl! ;)) Hope that he keeps in touch!

-- :( wish we were back on the Merc for her swan song.. Enjoy every last minute!

-- Lee

Mercury February 5, 2011 cruise ends, February 14, 2011 cruise Begins

The final few hours of the 9 night Feb 5th cruise were spent having breakfast in the dining room (very good, we weren’t rushed at all) and gathering our paperwork to meet up with the International Host who was to be our guide off the ship.

By 9:45 Joao had us all gathered together like little ducks, following him down the gangway and into the terminal. The weather was pleasantly mild and sunny. I really could have kept my shorts on, but in an abundance of caution I had changed to a sweat suit.

Immigration and customs took about 15 minutes. We then waited another 15 minutes for the ship to clear and were back on the ship in short order. They took our pictures for Sea Pass cards as we came aboard. The only other stop was by Guest Relations to have our credit card validated. After that we were free to move about the ship.

We sat in the Deck 5 Atrium, people watching as the new passengers started coming onboard. One of the wine stewards came over with a tray and gave us the choice of champagne or Mimosas. We didn’t even have to go get it ourselves. How’s that for service?

Before you read the next paragraph let me tell you that a good portion of the Elite passengers got the wrong coupons. The ones talked about below are for ships traveling to areas where there are water restrictions, such as Alaska. If you are going to Alaska, these are the coupons you would get as an Elite passenger. For other destinations the coupons remain the same.

One not so great thing greeted us when we returned to our cabins. The Elite Coupons have been changed. The Laundry has been reduced to 20 pieces from 30 pieces. The 20% off one bottle of wine when purchasing two bottles at the same time has been changed to 20% off one bottle of wine over $40. An extra bag of laundry can be done for $20, still two pressed items free and one dry cleaning item free. Still 90 minutes free Internet. Others are Free Acupuncture Assessment, 10% off regular priced treatment at the Spa, 6 free bonus game cards with purchase of a 4 Bingo card package, Free Fitness Class, two $5 match play coupons and 20% discount on digital printing. Persian Garden Pass and Free Specialty Coffee do not apply to Mercury.

Lunch started a little before noon and was like every first day: packed. We tried to eat early but it filled up fast with lines at all the stations. I ended up with two pieces of pizza and some ice cream. After food we all headed back to our staterooms for naps.

The four of us went up to the Pavilion at 3:45 (with a bottle of champagne) to watch the last sail away of Mercury from Baltimore. We stayed until we went under the bay bridge and then headed upstairs for a slice of pizza.

We all went back to our cabins except for Cil who went to the Internet Office to get her minutes put on her laptop. She told me it was really crazy there so since I knew from the daily that they would be staffed until 10 PM I decided to wait until after our 7:45 dinner to take care of it.

No Elite Social Hour today so I went to the Martini Bar and got a Bacardi Lemon’ Martini to take into the dining room. It was SO yummy. I think I could really get addicted to those drinks!

Dining room was great! We are at the same table (652) with Mario and Maja. Food was wonderful: Goat Cheese Tart, Wild Mushroom Soup, Prime Rib, Baked Potato with sour cream. Everything was perfect! Dessert was a special Valentines Day treat: Lemon Coconut Dasquis. Very coconutty so I really liked it. (Tonight was the standard first night menu.)

Left the dining room at 9 and headed down to the Internet Office. There was a sign that said ‘be back soon’. 45 minutes of waiting and three calls to guest relations got me a call in my cabin from someone at 9:50 telling me he was there now and would be for 10 more minutes. By that time I was not real happy to schlep back up there. So I asked what time they opened and he said 9. My mouth kicked in and I said I know those are your hours but when will someone actually BE there!

I always get a kick out of people who say I’m a cheerleader for X. I feel I’m pretty fair about things, try to see both sides of a situation and I never hesitate to mention something that annoyed me. And this annoyed me! I wanted to get this posted tonight and now it will be in the morning before I can get online.

Cil did say they seemed to know a little more about getting the laptops signed on. If you’ll remember on the last cruise lots of people had to put 3, 4 and sometimes 5 passwords in to get the minutes set up. For some reason it wouldn’t take logins and passwords on the first try. I used so many different logins and passwords I had to carry the magic one around on a piece of paper!

As I write this tonight, I am not a big fan of the Internet Department! I think it a wise move not to go back up there tonight! J At least he gets to live through tonight. Can’t speak for his health tomorrow!! LOL!

Someone asked me who my cabin steward and assistant were. CS is Cecep and his asst is Daniel. They are really, really good and have the odd numbered section on the Penthouse Deck that is around the aft elevators. You’re very lucky if you have them!

Bye For Now!

Mercury February 14, 2011 Day Two

Headed to the Elite Breakfast at 8. Boy was it crowded! Talked to Patti and Ed (Shiprgreat), Kathy but not Jack (Tourdecruise), Bonnie and John (monstermagic),

Gaye and Shellie, Patsy and too many others to mention. Suffice it to say it was old home week! We had such fun!

Cal and Sallie joined the four of us, later joined by Gaye and Shellie. It’s amazing how many chairs you can get around those little tables in the Pavilion! Of course none of us could reach the table because we had so many chairs there, but it was definitely fun!!

JoAn got her scooter delivered yesterday. It’s a rental that they bring onboard for you and you leave it here after the cruise. The difference in her is amazing! She looks like the weight of the world has been taken off her shoulders (one of which is frozen right now!) She can go where she wants without having to gauge how tired it will make her and if she can get back to her cabin. If you really need the help, please don’t be too stubborn or vain to give it a try. Everything and anything that keeps us mobile and cruising should be explored!

Well, at 9 AM I went back to the Internet office and told them how I had sat there from 9 to 9:45 by myself last night looking at a sign that said ‘be back soon’, made two calls to Guest Relations to try to find out when someone would be there and finally went back to my cabin. I told him about the call at 9:50 where I was told by someone that he would be there for ’10 minutes’ if I wanted to come then! The first response was ‘I was here until 9:15’ (which he wasn’t) and then ‘I had to go stretch my back (so was he in the gym????). Really not a satisfactory response. All he had to say was, I’m sorry, someone should have been here! How hard is that. I wanted to buy a bigger package but I lost all desire after our conversation! The good thing was they seem to have the login/password issue solved. I was out in a matter of minutes.

Went back to the Pavilion to wait for Cruise Critic Party. It was well attended and was visited by several senior officers including the Captain.

Afterwards, we went to talk to Angela, the Future Cruise Sales person. We are looking at the Infinity September 16th, which is a 10 Night Ultimate Alaska, Seattle to Seattle followed by the Infinity 17 Night Seattle to Ft Lauderdale repo. Looks to be a really nice, LONG cruise. $200 and $300 OBC’s are nice, too! Beats our shareholders credits.

It was too cold for even a protected deck. The wind seemed to be everywhere. No pool time so I opted to read until lunch.

We had looked at the dining room lunch menu and it wasn’t one of our favorites (Cane Sugar Crusted Steak, Cobb Salad are all I remember from it) so we went to deck 11.

I had a Corned Beef on Rye w/Provolone and two small Spring Rolls w/Mango Sauce.

It was all very good. We sat by the indoor pool to eat and it was very nice.

After lunch I went up to post yesterday’s diatribe, talked to Stewart, Mellissa and some CC people then found a cozy niche to read my book. About 3 I was back in my cabin to shower and dress for the Social Hour.

Lots of people around our table today: Gaye, Shellie, JoAn, Cil, Roger, Ugo and some other drop-ins. The Pavilion is really crowded this trip. I’ll try to remember to ask Mellissa how many Elites are on this cruise. I know there were 176 on the last cruise and this one is much more crowded.

Even though we have dinner at 7:45 we decided we would go see part of the 7 o’clock show. Fred Klett. I had seen him before but did not put that together until he got on stage and started talking. It was too late but I did remember. He’s very funny. The first 10 minutes is spent ushering latecomers to their seats in the front two rows. Another part of his show is harassing anyone who leaves before the show is over. He jumped off the stage, grabbed a lady by the arm when she tried to leave and escorted her back to her seat. Cil whispered that it was time to leave for dinner. I whispered back ‘no way’!

So we were late for dinner.

Felt really bad that we kept Mario waiting. We are his last table and I hate to be responsible for his having to work later than he is supposed to. Lord knows he works hard enough as it is. I am always knocked out by how hard everyone on ships work.

Have no idea how they keep going for such long hours, day after day!

Dinner was the menu with the Chicken Wellington. We all had the Cream of Corn Soup and the chicken with a baked potato. Chicken was very good. I also had the Escargot and Pistachio Ice Cream for dessert. Good dinner.

Cil went to the casino and I came up to finish this and get it posted tonight. The machines do seem to be paying off slightly more than they were on the last cruise. Anything paid would be more than the last cruise. I walked through the casino so many times on the last trip when there was almost no one there. Even the penny machines, which usually have people waiting to play, were almost always available.

Wish all of you sitting home reading this could be on here with us. This is a very bittersweet cruise. We are losing another of our beloved small ships. Everywhere you go, every corner you turn brings you to someone you know or have sailed with. That’s what the bigger ships have lost, that feeling of being ‘home’. The friendly, coziness that has long been a staple of the smaller ships. I grieve for our loss and for the new cruisers who will never know the joy of sailing on a smaller ship. Mercury, we miss you already!

Teedee, we do miss you! It would have been so nice if you could be here with us. Please know that you are in our thoughts and that your spirit is here with us!

Bye For Now!

Lee will pass your good wishes on to Cecep, Daniel and Oliver! Thanks for reading!

Linda, The food on here has been superb! I think the Mercury will be missing us, too! J

K, thanks for keeping in touch! I, too, LOVE KW and Coco Cay! Too bad you couldn’t stay on with us!

Wb3hyde, yes you are right, the Mercury crew is fantastic! Although the last sailing of a ship is sad I am grateful to be able to spend this time with some of the best people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting!

Someone just told me yesterday that Jacque is the best manager they have ever had the privilege of working we. She is very supportive of her people and never asks them to do things she isn’t willing to do herself. You’re also right in that it is sad to be breaking up such a wonderful team.

Ruth, seeing your great dog picture makes me miss my babies!

Purple is kind of my trade mark color so I’m glad it helps you find my latest post! I’ll keep then coming and hope I can continue to give you a little of the flavor of our final cruise!

To everyone else, thanks for reading!

Hi Gail, Have been trying to read your postings and really enjoying them. You do such a good job. I sure do envy you and all the cc's and do wish I was on the Mercury with you. I'm so sorry it didn't work out for us this time. A "hello" to Mellissa for us at the Elite Lounge. Keep the posts coming so we'll know what's happening.

Thanks, Fran and Tony:)

Hi Gail:

I was wondering if, this being the last cruise, whether the stores and boutiques would be having a real sale to get rid of merchandise rather than having to pack it all up and have it transferred to another ship.

We picked up a couple of Mercury t-shirts on the November 29th cruise as "historical artifacts". They were still charging full price -- maybe you can pick some up for 10 cents on the dollar.

My fantasy would be the duty free shop selling out its inventory at half price!

(Of course as a Canadian, I could only bring home one litre duty free -- but at half price, who cares!)

I was wondering if they were going to have a special sale on the items that says "Mercury" on them. The rest of the cruise line won't be able to use them. I'm sure they'll have some great deals. I also was wondering if the Jewelry and watches were going to be sold for cents on the dollar.

Gail, it was good to see you on Monday, sorry I didn't have more time to chat and you seem busy. Hope to see you when you debark on the 26th.

It was never my intent to "hijack" a thread by another member. I assumed as I was also live from the decks, I was able to participate, as any member can participate in any thread on cruise critic.

I didn't feel as I was off topic, as I was relating my experiences related to my personal vacation, occurring on the same ship, at the same time. I was honestly hoping the helpful nature I had previously experienced on the boards would have been extended by the many cc'ers on our cruise that not only were familiar with Mercury itself, but also with crew contacts as they've sailed multiple times with the line itself.

I honestly expected something along the lines of "call this number, email this person, ask for this person at the concierge" rather than being accused of making events up.

It's unfortunate that I feel I cannot relay any information about my personal experience because it does not line up with someone else's own experience.

I appreciate those cc members who approached us who are "lurkers" and offered assistance. It was a pleasure meeting the few of you we did and your advice was invaluable.

Now concerning the sales, I was surprised at the complete different "types" of shops they had on the mercury vs. the Eclipse. There were $20,000 necklaces on the Eclipse...an abundance of them. Now, there were some of those as well on the Mercury, but a great amount of jewelry was under $200 and well priced for what it was. We ended up picking up a lot of stuff on board, which I never do!

They had mercury photo books for .50 which were flying fast. Celebrity T-Shirts were 2 for $20. I thought the liquor prices seemed lower than any trip I'd been on, and my best friend took advantage of the 4 bottles of Crown Royal for $65 with a free travel bag offer. I let myself be persuaded into two bottles of the Amarula fruit liquor (quite easily). lol.

I also will agree the standard of the dining room service & food was outstanding. The best of any ship I've ever been on and easily comparable to zagat rated restaurants in my area.

I'm not sure I'll be sailing Celebrity any time in the future, however.

I hope you continue to enjoy the remainder of your sailing, Tuggers. I thought I'd track you down to say hi while on-board hoping for some insight.

I NEVER buy stuff onboard, except for a bottle of Amaretto the last day, but I wish I could get my hands on the Mercury stuff right now.

So what ended up happening? Did they take care of you at all? What were you in the hospital for originally?

Thanks. I was originally in the hospital because I have McArdle's Disease (a type of MD) which can cause kidney failure if I don't monitor it basically. It produces proteins when I exercise that are harmful.

I can do almost anything anyone else can do, with careful planning. Someone previously made a comment about how basically I shouldn't be cruising or vacationing anymore..I've done primitive camping vacations with careful planning and packing. I just need to know what's available to me and not available with truthful honestly.

I was in the infirmary parts of two days getting injectable medicine because of that sauna bench. I basically haven't been "told" anything but the people stateside said that the info from customer service backs up everything I've stated and they have stated everything is their fault.
