    • Yes, a sticker /time stamp is a great idea on all cruises.

    • No way, the system now is fine when the pool butlers swing into action

    • I don't trust a pool butler to be honest, or the stickers could be switched... to easy to cheat

    • Hands off my stuff. I reserved that sun bed and it's mine

I totally agree that a chair should not be left for hours.

But if I set my alarm and get up at 8am so I can get a chair in the shade, and then go for breakfast later in the morning, I do not agree that I should lose that chair to someone who gets out of bed at noon. The early bird catches the worm;)

Here you go, right here's the problem.

The bottom line is just because you think it doesn't make it so.

Here is what Celebrity's website states;

"Discourteous or Disruptive Behavior

Pool, deck and theater chairs may not be reserved."

There is no reserving of chairs period. That is the rule, it's not a matter open to opinion or interpretation.

After reading all the posts I have come to one conclusion. Lets charge for the chairs by the pool.

If the cruise line charged $5 per chair per day then there would be no problems. The chair hogs would go away and those that want a spot for the day will pay.

Maybe the cruise line could sell levels of chairs. The premium package (front row of pool) for $6 and back row for $5, just like the beverage package.

If you paid for the chair then you could go to lunch and not worry about your space being taken away.

Someone mentioned about bringing back your lunch and eat it there at the pool. But what if that was not what that person wanted to do and wanted to eat in the dining room. I guess they loose out. But if they paid for their chairs, they would not have to worry.

Paying $5 a day is a small price to pay for the comfort of knowing there will not be chair hogs. Cause the chair hogs will not pay $5.

Like everything else in life, the first come first serve. The first to pay the $5 get their choice. Just like tours. First to sign up would get booked and those that wait, well that's the way it works. You just hope the tour doesn't sell out.

Sorry to be so blunt but when on vacation I think a person should be able to relax and enjoy and not worry about loosing their chairs by the pool when going to lunch (or being forced to eat outside when they want to eat inside).

Maybe a new poll should be posted. Charge $5 for a chair to get rid of the Chair Hogs.

Sorry, but serious??? Well, I know that money rules the world, but do you seriously think that, let uns take your example of 6$, for a 7 day cruise, 56$ gives you the right to have a chair all day long? I mean, if you can afford a cruise, 56$ is NOTHING. Then everyone would do so!

Because really...

At the end of the day, this ends up being our (anti-hoggers) problem, not theirs (hoggers). We're the ones that get annoyed and frustrated and grumble to ourselves and our spouses and perhaps even a cruise comment card, tainting an otherwise good vacation.

The hoggers, on the other hand, none the wiser, come back to their chairs 3 hours later happily enjoying life, unaware that the rest of us were seriously upset.

Maybe we need to create a movement where chair hogging is no longer tolerated by turning a blind eye... empower everyone who has manners to reclaim those seats that have been empty for hours.

Aren't we enabling the hoggers by not doing anything?

We need to raise awareness that leaving the lounger for a leisurly meal or some casino time - at sea or on land - is not cool!

Where's my "empower" emoticon???

Yes, let's do this! Let us start a movement! Any suggestions out there?? After one hour, things to lost and found is a bit lame, what about a flyer to put on the hoggs' chair saying, "I'm possesed by a hogg, please let me free"? Or, "Freedom for chairs"?;)

OMG an NCL Rep is reading the =X= boards!!! Charging $5 for a chair for the day sure SEEMS like something that NCL would do:p

It all comes done to one basic priniciple - respect for fellow cruises.

If you're going to sit in a chair then sit in it. It you are planning sitting in that chair in the next 10 minutes then play your stuff, get your stuff and sit in it.

If you're going to be gone from that chair for longer than 30 minutes (and not swmiining/hot tub) pack your stuff and leave and allow a fellow cruise the opportunity to use the chair.

Why do people feel the need to be so selfish?

YES!

I was thinking about something along the lines of a brochure(s) with titles like "Raising Awareness of Chair Hogging" for the non-hoggers, and "How to tell if you are a Chair Hog" for the hoggers...

The brochure for the non-hoggers would empower them to take over any seat left empty for over 45 minutes....

The brochure for the hogger would define hogging and explain how rude it is to hog and how it affects other people...

We could post them up on CC as a sticky and let all hog vigilantes in all cruiselines print some out to hand them out at their cruises :D

Maybe it would pick up soon enough to force the cruiselines to do something themselves...

Sounds good in theory, but what if we have a nice spot we enjoy and then it is gone when we return. Not my idea of a good vacation.

If there are plenty of chairs available in good locations (sun, shade, quiet, etc) then this is not an issue. It only becomes an issue when I return from lunch and find my chair gone.

I don't like those that abuse the system, but unfortunaltly, all suffer for those that abuse the system. Why punish the innocent?

ME, MY, I!!!!

Your attitude is part of the cause of the problem.

Where I live, the drivers used to let others in when they used their directional signal. Then we got a large influx of Northern drivers that sped up instead of being friendly. Now the Southern drivers retaliate by doing the same.

No where in the X contract does it say you are intitled to reserve a chair while you go to lunch, shop and see a program to return 3 hours later.

Your attitude is just plain rude to your "fellow" passengers.

Sorry, but as gently as I can say it...expecting your chair or chaise when you get back from lunch is not being considerate of others. I don't even try to find a spot by the pool when I cruise because half the chaises are occupied by bodies and the other half by those "reserving" their personal territory with towels.

I see where Celebrity has shipboard meetings for Friends of Bill W and Friends of Dorothy. Might I suggest a new group:

Friends of Porky Pig?

Hello all, my name is ___________ and I'm a chair hog!

But seriously I think I'm going to take some post it's with me on my upcoming Solstice cruise. When I see a chair with a towel on it I'll wright down the time and post it. After 30 minutes if a body doesn't come by I'll take that chair myself.

If the original chair hog shows up it's simple - your time expired and I'm here now - Sorry. (It helps that I'm 6'1" and 235 too) :p

LOL! Even if they got mad, you could tell them it was a new policy by the pool waiters. They probably wouldn't know any better.

And the time someone gets out of bed has what to do with the issue??!?!?! The issue is chairs left unattended and unused for sometimes hours at a time. Doing so is inconsiderate of fellow passengers and IMHO selfish. Everyone on that ship has an equal right to use of the chairs. To feel justified in holding one while you dine just because you happen to be an early riser reads to me as rationalization of bad behavior. My opinion.

Do we really need stickers etc? Can't we just remove those abadoned towels as a cruise community service? Why do the "hoggers" need a note. They are smart people they'll figure out that their towels were removed. They just don't need to know that I did it. If they find me in their chair I will explain there was no towel on it when I sat down. I will simply exclude the sentence indicating its b/c I removed it 30 seconds prior to sitting. For the record though...I won't just go around taking peoples' chairs. I will observe for 1.5 hours prior to making my move.

Hope you only go for twenty or thirty minutes tops. Other wise your claim is null and void. Behinds not towels and junk are for sun beds.

Early bird gets the worm is trumped by possession is 9/10ths of the law. The other 1/10th is your belongings at lost and found.

(and Better not sit at my reserved breakfast table. ;):D)

LOL Lord fordid that a table hog sits at your table. They might put a stickter on their chair.

I think the point is that you are not entitled to the same chair for the entire day. Why would you think that you are? When you come to the pool area, find a place to sit. Period. The first place you sit down in the morning is not "your" chair for the day.

Sad to say, but maybe thats the difference between a cruise and a land vacation. When you get a spot it is yours for the day. If a person finds a place they like and stays there all day except for lunch, why should they loose their chairs to someone that just shows up 6 hrs later.

If you went to the theatre and went to intermission and came back and someone was sitting in your seats, what would you think?

I despise those that park a towel all day on a chair and then not use it. These are the ones that are rude. But to be at the pool all day and leave to go to lunch and come back and enjoy the day to be called a chair hog, WOW, makes you wonder what the thought process is here.

I think the real problem is those that arrive too late at the pool and can't find the ideal spot. There might be plenty of chairs, but they want to take away from those that have a chair all day just because they arrive late and none available. Sure take the chairs away from us. We will just find other ways to travel.

What we have here is failure to communicate, some men you just can't reach.

It's easy to see what the problem is when you explain it plain as day to someone and they still want it their way.

Sure, let the people who get their early have them all day/. We will just find other ways to travel, too?

If you're planning to literally hang out at a pool all day long, then you should make appropriate plans for lunch.

It is NOT AT ALL the same as going to the theater ... No one is required to get to the pool at the same starting time... there is no announced break from the pool for everyone... if you come to the pool in the middle of the day, you didn't miss out on half a pool's story line. Imagine if everyone came and went from a theater performance as they pleased... to go grab lunch/snack, go to the bathroom, get something from their room... ????:(

And there is NO difference in that aspect between a cruise and a land vacation. In a cruise, there are several other activities going on at the same time, just as there would be on land. If you found other ways to travel, you'd still be considered a chair hog on land if you "reserved your seat" while you went for a 3 hour lunch and walk down the beach/massage/nap/insert activity here.

I don't want to be narrow minded, so if you tell us you take 40 mins to go grab lunch from the buffet or the grill and go to the bathroom... fine, keep your seat, you are well within your right. But to think that it's your right to keep it anytime while you're not there because you got there first??? It's the same as reserving your lunch table at the buffet as decribed earlier in this thread.

It's yours while you're using it.

If your gone more than 30 minutes and don't take your stuff with you. Your a chair hog, no matter how you attempt to justify your reasons.

If you go too eat a meal and don't take you stuff your a chair hog.

If you go to play bingo in the theater and leave your stuff on your chair guess what your still a chair hog.

If you got to have portraiture taken by the ships photographer and don't take your stuff your a chair hog.

If your book has a better tan than you, your a chair hog.

If your husband / wife might show up some time before the end of the cruise and that's why the chair your saving is empty your a chair hog.

If you go back to your cabin to take a shower watch some tv order some room service and don't take the stuff off your deck chair your a chair hog.

If you wake up at 4 am to put a flip flop and a towel on a chair for noon your a chair hog,

To justify your actions with meaningless reasons doesn't make them valid, there are plenty of chairs and seats in shade and sun spots on ever ship 10 feet either way won't make a difference. So unless your swimming in the pool, in the bathroom, or getting a drink from the closest bar location you should take all your personal items with you including your towel. Its the right thing to do and if we all do it them we will all be able to get a seat.
