What is there to do in Cannes?

My parents are embarking on their first cruise soon and are calling at Cannes. All the ship excursions head for Nice and Monte Carlo etc but there is nothing for Cannes.

Is this because

  • it is easy to do on foot?
  • there is nothing to do or see?

One trip talks about a road train in Nice. Is there a road train in Cannes? Is there a HOHO bus in Cannes?

It just seems a bit daft to me that you arrive at one port and feel obliged to travel somewhere else. Surely Cannes has something to offer.:confused::confused:

We enjoyed Canne, went to the Museum de la Castre (be sure to climb the tower for a great view), Notre Dame church, walk the streets and ate lunch. After that we rode the ferry over to Ile Sainte-Margierite which has some beaches, a fort and a prison (the "Man in the Iron Mask" was imprisoned here).

Looking at the Rick Steves guide, high end shopping and beach are what it has to offer. But Antibes is very close. That's a place I'd like to see. But it's just not convenient from Monaco, where we dock.

There are several ports in the Med where you arrive at that port and feel obligated to travel somewhere else. We have Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples, and Marseille on our next itinerary and won't be seeing much of any of them because we prefer Florence, Rome, Capri, and Provence.

  • 2 weeks later...

We just got off the ship in Cannes and walked around. We were with a group of friends and had a wonderful time! There was an outside arts and crafts sale going on when we were there. We also visited an internet cafe and sent e-mails to family and friends. We thought about taking the train to Monte Carlo, but decided not to because we would be visiting there later in the cruise. We were there just a few days before the Cannes Film Festival, and they were setting everything up for it. I'm sure there were probably movie stars "hiding out" in their hotel rooms at the time!:)

As noted, there are options and potentials in Cannes. BUT, the potentially "BETTER" options might be, maybe, a little farther away from Cannes. This could include Eze, Monaco, Nice, other nearby villages, a wonderful coastline, etc. Lots of great options to see and things to do. You can scroll back or use the search function to see other details. Below are a few of my visuals for Eze, Monaco, the nearby coast line, etc. Can't do it "ALL" during one cruise day in that one port. Good reason to come back, see more, do Provence, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

In Monaco, the Casino might be the most famous building:

Here is one of the parks in Monaco with the scenic mountains in the background:

The charming mountain top village of Eze is nearby and offers great view along the coast:

Here’s a sampling of the fun at a market day in Provence:

Do you remember what day of the week you were there? What I'm really wondering is if the arts and crafts sale is set up everyday, or just certain days of the week.

Thanks!

Tess

THANKS, Tess! It's a beautiful area. I just took the pictures. Somebody else deserves the great credit for that wonderful beauty. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
