I had never heard of Bronson, either, but I was on that same cruise. He also sang very nicely in the karaoke in the evening. I think that was on Solstice. That captain was like a standup comedian and the officers were great.

Ummm...(showing my ignorance..)

Who is Lauren?

Lauren Bacall?

Wow!

Humphrey's lady and, DW?

Never know where you might see her.....a little OT, but she was sitting in front of me at an Elton John concert that hubby and went to at Madison Square Garden back in 2005 that I scored ninth row seats for. She was dressed in a long silver taffetta gown and was accompanied by a young woman who sat next to her and two gentleman who sat behind us. It's nothing to see famous people at MSG in New York, but they usually don't stick out like they did...they really were not meeting the dress protocol for a rock concert. :p They may have been at dinner or a show before arriving at the concert as they were late arrivals.

Couple of years ago, wife and I were given a free cruise on NCL by Harrahs casinos. I booked the cruise in the winter going to the Caribbean, not realizing it was a NY Football Giants theme cruise. I was in my glory since I have always been a big Giants fan. Most of the contact with them was limited to those who booked through the group booking. There were actually only about 7 Giants on the cruise however a couple were old timers. We did a shore excursion with their Wide Receiver Dominik Hixon who was a real nice guy.. I took a picture of Carl Banks and his wife. Also saw one of the Giants working out in the gym, wow, they are in a different world than us.

Bronson Arrojo (sp?), some kind of professional baseball player, was on our Nov. 2010 Solstice cruise. He and his buds beat the captain's team in water volley ball. I have never heard of him.

He was a pitcher for the Red Sox in 2004 (world series team)!!!:D He now pitches for Cincinnati Reds.

Amaila was a big time movie star in the Philippines, she was considered the Liz Taylor of the Philippines in her prime. We met her past her prime in Infinity to South America. She followed Liz into the over weight category, but still had a great face. She was loved by all the Filipinos on board and she returned their affection, a very gracious lady. Flora being Filipino they hit it off right a way. ~ Ric

That's such a weirdly complimentary and insulting paragraph all at the same time.

Can you teach me how to talk to my FIL like that? LOL

I don't see any insult here, if I had called her a Fat @$$ that would have been an insult. The fact that she put on a few pounds as a lot of us have and a lot of us are past our prime too is just a fact of life. ~ Ric

TO RMSEADOG,

<< We met her past her prime in Infinity to South America. She followed Liz into the over weight category, but still had a great face >>

Ouch!!

It is called a back-slap... where an insult or poor remark (past her prime / over weight) about a person is joined together with a compliment (still had a great face).

As in... he is a really nice guy... until he opens his mouth.

Some people do it so well... that the "innocent" victims of their abuse barely notice. For some it truly is an artform.

For others, it is just a lack of knowledge of what is and isn't proper etiquette when it comes to what should and shoudn't be discussed in a social setting.

And for still others it means a high-paying job in comedy (ala Joan Rivers)

Cheers!

In my part of the world we call it "a backhanded compliment". The term applies to a comment that on the surface appears to be a compliment, but in reality is intended to insult the targeted individual. In my view to be a backhanded compliment there needs to be an intent to embarass or insult. RMSeadog's remark doesn't even come close to meeting the minimum standard since he obviously admires, even adores the person. Now, let's get back to the original purpose of this thread ;)

LOL. Yes, that was the type of compliment...but seriously, back to my FIL?

I would say "in my day" one didn't make comments like that about a lady in public. But that would not be quite true as I'm 30 and I'm just old fashioned.
