warringtonian Posted July 7, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2011 I have just posted a review of the Crown Princess, but I completely forgot to mention something that many people on board commented on. The TV in the cabins has no news channel, if you don't count CNN sports. Despite the fact that we were going round the British Isles there was no BBC or ITV or Sky news and not even a ship's newspaper. In my case I was able to download the Times each day on an iPad but it just seemed strange.
sunsetbeachgal Posted July 7, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 7, 2011 That is strange...my two most recent cruises were on the Star (Caribbean) and the Ocean (greece and Med) and both had MSNBC, Fox News and CNN (the European version). So there was something for everyone!
bugsy43 Posted July 7, 2011 #3 Share Posted July 7, 2011 We've always had CNN International on Every cruise we've been on, and in fact all of my 3 recent Princess cruises in the past 3 years has had CNN as well as BBC News.
warringtonian Posted July 7, 2011 Author #4 Share Posted July 7, 2011 Maybe it was because we were in a suite and they were shielding us from real life?
JohnLauben Posted July 7, 2011 #5 Share Posted July 7, 2011 On the OCEAN PRINCESS in May, we had MSNBC, Fox News and BBC, but no CNN. Speculation was that there may be some licensing costs and/or other fees associated with this.
Loonbeam Posted July 7, 2011 #6 Share Posted July 7, 2011 It also may depend on what satellite services are available on a particular route. Lower capacity satellites may have fewer channels.
robgvic Posted July 7, 2011 #7 Share Posted July 7, 2011 The crown had limited news on the ta in may. Crew said it was satellite problems but i know that the celebrity ship sailing cloe to us had no problems so there must be several satellites available. Pam in CA Posted July 7, 2011 #8 Share Posted July 7, 2011 It also may depend on what satellite services are available on a particular route. Lower capacity satellites may have fewer channels. You're right. It has a lot to do with the satellite and the channel and nothing to do with local programming. And, it has to do with where the ship is sailing (latitude and longitude.)

SiBreeze Posted July 7, 2011 #10 Share Posted July 7, 2011 When we were on the Emerald in June there was no HLN or CNN. No news channels at all.
FawnRiver Posted July 7, 2011 #11 Share Posted July 7, 2011 We had news channels on both of our last cruises, but they were both in the Caribbean (even in the suite we had on the Crown).
caribill Posted July 7, 2011 #12 Share Posted July 7, 2011 On the OCEAN PRINCESS in May, we had MSNBC, Fox News and BBC, but no CNN. Speculation was that there may be some licensing costs and/or other fees associated with this. Actually, even with all of the above, there is very little real and current news, especially about back in the USA if you are from there. MSNBC - mostly financial and commentary Fox News - a few hours of real news, then just commentary BBC - period of news (but very little USA news). Lots of hours on a single subject. CNN - lots and lots of commentary. News is often of the Nancy Grace variety.
homeinboca Posted July 7, 2011 #13 Share Posted July 7, 2011 We only watch the Love Boat channel when we are on our Princess cruise. Not really interested in what's going on otherwise. For me, it's a time to unplug!
lovevacadays Posted July 8, 2011 #14 Share Posted July 8, 2011 For me, when I'm on a cruise, no news is indeed great news. I don't watch the news while on a cruise. I like having that break from the real world.
4x4bob Posted July 8, 2011 #15 Share Posted July 8, 2011 Some times No News Is good. Example: Our last cruise was on the Island Princess heading South out of L.A. for the Canal. I was laying on the bed sipping a cold one when the New announced that due to heavy rain the Canal had been shut down. :( This was the 3rd time in the History of the Canal. Mother Nature did take pitty on us and reduced the rain to light drizzle and the locks were reopened by the time we arrived. :) Lucky for us Cruise ships have priority so we sailed on past a lot ships waiting their turn to go through. reney313 Posted July 8, 2011 #16 Share Posted July 8, 2011 Is there really a Love Boat Channel on Princess Ships? I WOULD LOVE to watch old episodes all day long :)
