drink prices and the 15% gratuity

They aren't as high as what I'm used to paying at a restaurant or club in Dallas.

I agree with you. The prices on the ship are very much in line with most major clubs in the city. Heck, the ship prices are even cheaper than Vegas if you buy directly from the bar. Those comp drinks they hand out in Vegas while gambling can come out to $100 a drink :D

If someone thinks they're going to get a $1 bar drink on the ship, they need to readjust their expectations.

And, Yes, the drinks are measured by computer on the ship and in most land based establishments.

On a ship you are held hostage if you want that drink you have to pay their price....you can't even try to compare it to Vegas where the prices for drinks varies from casino to casino......there are many nice casinos that I pay cheaper for a bottle of beer verses Carnival. But most I only pay a dollar tip:D In fact I am headed for Vegas this week.....I should make a casino beer chart lol!

Yeah, there's no casino video poker bar free for all on a cruise ship. :)

If there was they may never get me to leave.

As for the "pour", you gotta keep that in mind when you plan your budget. Say you get the menu pdf and think "oh, I like to drink my favorite hard liquor on the rocks, $5.50, that's not bad at all."

Nuh uh. A respectable drink on a ship is a double unless you buddy up (re: bribe) a bartender that just doesn't care a whole lot about his/her job.

So really it's $12 something or other after tip.

You're only counting the tip. You're not counting those 5 hands you lost between the "free" drink.:D

No the secret is.....go casino hopping....walk up to the bar and stick a $20 in the machine......get your beer tip and cash out......next....

That's only when I need a break from gambling:D Or go back to the hotel and grab a cold one from the ice chest......

"Free" casino bars can be hustled if you're of the mind to do that. Bartenders work for tips. If I go to AC I can play cheapo video poker here and there and get hours of "free" drinks as long as I treat the bartender well.

Absolutely......and some of the casinos we frequent will give me a drink even if I am just standing behind dh watching him play......as long as the tip glass looks good......

What about hotel bars? Whenever I stay in a hotel, drink prices are sky high.

they go on my expense report. unless there's an open bar.

yet hotel bars are there for not only hotel guests, especially when you go abroad.

but there is no monopoly there if you do have a room. if you choose, you can pour freely.

and speaking of hotels, isn't it interesting many charge a monthly internet access rate for one night, when dive motels provide it for free?

and how 'bout them peanuts...

I don't go to Vegas, Dallas or Chicago, or a bunch of other places. The prices are high compared to where I live (and drink). A draft beer is $1.75 - $2.50 (the high end of that is at the local brewery), a mixed drink is $3.50 - $4.50.

My point is that while it is less expensive for some of ya'll, it is on the high end for others. I'll pay the price and have a great time, but stop with the holier than thou attitudes b/c it is what 'you' are used to.

wow! that is really expensive. you have 5 or 6 of those a night and your going to go broke, lol. and beer over 6? geez. now i see why people smuggle on liquor. im not really a drinker either, but would like to have a few at least one night.

Maybe in one of your ports of call you could instead have a few drinks on the beach or at a bar. Will be cheaper thst way.

Just don't miss the boat! :D

a real drink at "home" is half the price and at least twice the liquor. and always a buy back.

It's all perspective. Doesn't seem all that high to me. I work behind the bar of a kids waterpark resort where kids smoothie type beverages are $6.99 and some of the adult bev's (sangria) are $11.99/each. Miami Vice - here I come. :D

We stopped at Bayside prior to our last cruise out of Miami. We were browsing around and decided to stop at the Chili's Restaurant for a quick beer. We sat down, (2 of us) and each ordered a Sam Adams on tap. 20oz. I believe. That was it. 2 beers, $17 and change !!!! I questioned the bartender because it seemed pricey and surely there must be a mistake. Nope! Live and learn I guess.

When we arrived on the Valor we noticed Thirsty Frog beer available on tap. We sat down and ordered one each. Charge on Sail and sign card was a little over $12. A fair price IMO. Go figure, beer was cheaper on the ship than at a large chain restaurant.
