Help from someone with pull

We are onboard Coral Princess for the next 5 days (@ sea) and they say they do not have a license to be able to show the World Series. Can this be true?

This is one of the largest sporting events in the US every year. I just find this hard to believe and Customer service indicated this has to go to the home office.

By the way we had Collage Football on all day Saturday and we are a mostly American cruise. Thanks to anyone who can find out if it is possible to get broadcast.

Yes it can be very true. Since they have to pay a fee (what I think they are calling a license) for different sporting events (some they do pay, some they don't, as the price is too high), this happens often with certain games. Sorry you won't be able to watch the world series onboard.

Sometimes you are lucky and sometimes not. We were lucky to watch a bowl game during the day on MUTS! That was really cool. But you just never know.

Good thing we did not take our cruise a week earlier. My husband is a huge Cardinals fan. I really think he would have refused to get on the ship if he knew they did not have the games. But, it should all be over by the time we leave on Oct 28th.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, I will have to make sure not to book a cruise in late Oct.

Kim, sorry you can't watch the game on your cruise. STL 3-2 tonight, game 1. I am sure you can get the scores on the TV though or the score on the internet.I know, it is not the same. I think if they told you onboard no World Series of Baseball, they meant it, whatever the reason was. Wish I had some pull!

Looks like from your signature that this is your first Princess cruise? So maybe no free internet for you to check the score too often or look at this forum too often?

Princess has to pay MLB for the rights to rebroadcast the game... it's quite possible that those fees, this year, are exorbitant... it'll be interesting to see if it's being shown on any other ship...

and really... who cares.. it's a midwest series... Yawn... LOL. :p

If you have been putting this request to the purser's desk you will not get anything accomplished. It is not the hotel department but the entertainment department (ie the cruise director) that decides if a live event is to be shown on Movies Under the Stars, in the sports bar, or on stateroom TV. And yes, the budget has gone down while rights fees have risen. The cruise director on Star Princess in May told us during her presentation on the Ultimate Ships Tour that showing the royal wedding on MUTS cost more than the entire voyages satellite budget.

Thanks to everyone for your knowledge on this subject. We are not on the cruise to watch baseball; however it is nice when there is BIG games on you can watch. They have monitors in the casino that we can watch soccer???? or tennis and I like tennis. On other ships we have had watch parties around the super bowl and the WS which were a blast. Just seems crazy to me not to offer the WS of Baseball when we have 5 days at sea????

It just showed up in tonights Patter that tomorrow MUTS at 5:30 will be the World Series (Reception Permitting). I am happy about this but I still think the purser's desk should have known instead of telling us they did not have a license.

Don't blame the Pursers....things like this can be very fluid, depending on how many ships are requesting this and what the company determines it will do....I've seen the decision made within minutes of a game or event....until the "License" is paid for they are correct, no permission did exist to broadcast it legally.

Keep in mind most workers are from different countries and have little or no interest in American Sports and couldn't tell you who or when what series is, sometimes can't tell you what the date is, only that it is Sea day or Juneau day or turnaround day,lol

I worked at the pursers desk, am American, and I couldn't tell you what Sports were playing....you would NEVER understand the scope of questions that Pursers get asked....I wouldn't have believed it until I worked there....simply amazing.

We were equally surprized that there was no coverage of the winter olympics 2 years ago. People were quite desperate for news on the medals standing, so I spend a bundle on internet each evening before dinner so I could bring reports! I'm not even a sports fan!

Can we dispense with the sarcasm and eye rolling? The OP has five consecutive sea days, and the WS games are on in the early evening (her time). I don't think that OP would be missing out on any valuable cruising activities if she opted to watch a WS game instead of seeing a tenth consecutive show in the Theater, or yet another Tina Turner concert on MUTS. It's not as if she is going to be glued to the game while the other passengers enjoy the passage through the Panama Canal. What do you nay-sayers do between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. that is so darned important that she should be doing instead of watching the WS?

Wow, what a bummer for baseball fans :(

I really enjoyed getting to watch my Packers beat both the Eagles and Falcons in the playoffs last year. I brought my Rodgers jersey to wear and ended up watching both games on MUTS with some really nice people from Wisconsin. It was a lot of fun to be up on deck, sailing away from Ft. Lauderdale with the sunset, and the Packer's game :D I remember being so happy to find out that the game the following week would be on Saturday and not Sunday so I'd get to watch it on the ship.

Hi All

Would be nice if they did away with the TV, Phone and internet,

just think two weeks in our own little world, no stress

Maybe for you it would be nice -- being completely cut off from home would be terrible for me, the complete opposite of "no stress."

If you don't like the TV, phone or internet, you aren't required to use them.
