So is the new tipping rate screwing the crew over now?

Recommended Posts

I don't care how my tip gets divided. I'm paying $12 pp/pd next month on NCL. I don't know how they divide it and I don't care. I just think it is odd that you think you need to drag up all these other posts to copy one poster's hearsay over and over again:rolleyes:.

Same with us next month on Princess.........and I heard they pool all their tips.......

who and how you tip are between you and your wait staff.

And I leave it up to Carnival to decide who exactly that wait staff is... You don't have to. Change it if you don't like how they do it. It still doesn't mean I have to care how they do it. I don't look for conspiracies around every corner (especially when its over $1.50). I think there are only a handfull of you who want to carry this debate forward...the rest of us can't make you see that we just don't care about your crusade and are more than willing to pay $11.50 no matter who receives it. Carry on with your pursuit of justice. I'll keep watching and being entertained by your needless crusade:D.

It's one thing to worry about where your extra 1.50 is going while chatting on CC, it's another to worry about it on vacation. I know while I'm on the ship the furthest thing from my mind will be tipping issues, and I certainly won't spend any time worrying about it, LET ALONE spending anytime at the guest relations desk worrying about it:rolleyes::)

Its not even the $1.50, its who gets it,thats all.

If its a tip then tell me who gets the tip.Why tip the Casino dealer if you don't gamble? Why tip the kids camp if you don't have kids.

Its all so simple,who gets?

I totally agree. I would rather not tip people that have no impact on my vacation and tip those who have. What is Carnival hiding by NOT divulging who is getting the tip money? Why is it such a close guarded secret? Be upfront and tell me who I'm tipping.

Discussing it on here and spending 5 minutes at guest services to make a change to tip the people whom we think should be tipped is not a matter of worrying but for us to do what we think is the right thing.

I have a question....I was told if you remove the tips and then choose to tip who you want, they are required to turn the money into the front desk. The only way they can keep the tip is if the passenger kept the auto tip and then gave extra????....I know this is the way its done on HAL.

What I mean is if we are tipping the entertainment staff, and the guest relations type people, shouldn't we be tipping the people that are helping get us on the ship, the guest relation that checks us in and gets us our Sign and Sail card, takes our picture at the "Ding" machine, and the others that are at embarkation? After all if it was not for them, I would not be on the ship. And what about the PVP/guest relation people that we call to book the cruise, and when we have pre-cruise questions? Shouldn't they get a tip also?

Has anyone ever been on a small expedition class vessel? You usually tip on the last night by throwing an envelope into a basket and they distribute it among themselves. I didn't ask how, I just did what I believed was appropriate. In fact the staff didn't take personal tips, that's just the way that ship operated.

Has anybody ever tipped a DJ on a cruise? In a lot of places that's customary so I would venture to guess there might be something in it for that role. What about live bands? In restaurants on shore people will tip a musician. I could go on.

Guest services means anyone working in that department. Not just the suits behind the desk. In some hotels that could include errand runners like bellboys/porters. I'm not going to pretend I know how Carnival operates but there's just so many things and you have to look at the big picture before you can whine. I would doubt singers/dancers, stage techs, cruise staff and hotel suits are getting tipped though. Who do you think brings you room service? Sadly a lot of people weren't tipping them because they thought it was taken care of. Especially snotty teenagers.

All in all, auto tipping is a good thing. There were a lot of jerks out there who didn't tip.

I agree nothing wrong with auto tips. My complaint is they just increased alternative by a buck and started to include new people in it such as guest services and entertainment. That is my complaint.

If Carnival thinks they deserve give it to them dont expect us to do so by tipping.

I assume that the people who check us in are at least making minimum wage unlike the room steward and wait staff on the ship. I assume that the entertainment staff are making more money then the guy who delivers my room service breakfast tray. When does tipping stop being for great service rendered and start being a surcharge?

You would probably be wrong in the grand scheme of things.

The people who check you in are making at least minimum in US dollars.

The room steward is average $7 a cabin per day with at least 10 if not 20 cabins. So they are getting $70-$140 per day in tips which is a weeks pay or more from where many come from.

Same thing for entertainment staff, depends where they are from and what their standard of living is.

The tip thing is a joke, its so CCL can brag now they one another award for being the best priced cruiseline.Thats because they pay their staff crap and rely on the passengers.

So your saying CCL gets awards for being the cheapest cruiseline because all the other mass market foreign flagged ships make minimum wage or at least pay them a decent wage that without tips?

If you have a problem with any of the tipping, just go to Customer Service and tell them you want it turned off and tip who YOU think deserves the tips. The Auto tipping is merely a convenience. But I also think that everyone on one of these ships deserves every dime they make, so I have no problem with it, and also tip over and above the $11.50 they are charging now.

There is a reason there are so many foreigners working on these ships, and that reason is that there is very few if any Americans that would stay away from home for 6 months at a time, and work for less than minimum wage. If they hired Americans, I dare say they would not have the positive attitudes and give the great service that you get now on any cruise line. We Americans have become fat and spoiled... :/

No,

Some other lines have service charges, and even if they had a service charge they still would be cheaper as they are the Walmart of sea's.

They offer a good product at a good price for the average person and are very profitable doing that way.

Now as far as awards go,do you really think its a level playing field? When you have 20 ships and someone else has 5 who do you think will get more votes on anything?

Which line has the most posts on this BB?

Spoke to the musicans when we were on the Splendor in 2009. Thought of our son who was a music major at that time. We were told that musicans have to have a BA and earned at least $500 a week. That was all they would admit to.

Son graduated in May and one of his friends was hired by NCL. His salary is $3000 a month.

Now Carnival wants us to tip these people? DUHHHHH

Yeah... You forgot that this person also tips out the assistants who help and make it possible to do that many cabins twice a day... You don't know how it's split... Going to more then one person...

You don't know that.... How about the social host making about $250 a week? Karaoke hosts make very little as well... You don't know who gets this... Nobody does yet.... Total speculation on your part... And I do know for a fact that not all musicians make $500 a week... Some do but not all...

Why didn't you just say that in the first place instead of putting your spin on it to support your agenda.
