chargap Posted January 1, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 1, 2012 As we are doing our own arrangements for flights and transfers, I am wondering how difficult this will be. What is the best way to get back and forth? How far is it? We don't fly out on our return until late afternoon-is there a place to store luggage? sail7seas Posted January 1, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 1, 2012 When we fly into San Juan for a cruise, we always go at least a day or two early to enjoy some more time there. We love San Juan. We take taxis and it couldn't be easier. There is always a line up of them outside luggage claim at the airport. Depending upon time of day/traffic, the ride is about 20 minutes to the Old San Juan downtown docks with a fixed rate fare. There is a small charge for each suitcase. hancogran Posted January 1, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 1, 2012 Getting from the airport to the dock in San Juan is very easy. When you exit the airport, there will be a line for taxis. You tell the person in charge where you're going and how many pieces of luggage you have and you will get a slip of paper to give to the driver. Not sure which port you're sailing from since there's one in Old San Juan, and the Pan Am pier but the fare should be $19.00 total, plus $1.00 for each piece of luggage you have. It takes about 20 - 30 minutes to get to the ports depending on traffic. As far as a place to store your luggage in San Juan before your flight home, I've heard people mention Barrachina's restaurant in San Juan will store it for you, or you could take one of the ship sponsored tours and that would solve your problem too. Happy cruising! :)
sail7seas Posted January 1, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 1, 2012 You also can book a 'day room' at a hotel....... if you can find one willing to do that. We booked a room at a fine hotel for the night before and advised we were coming in early on a cruise ship. We left the ship by 9:00 and were checked into our room and on our way to the pool by 9:45. Because we 'had' the room from the day before, there was no waiting to get in. The only way this is worth anything is if they guarantee you late check out. We had a 5:00 P.M. check out for a 7:00 P.M. flight. It was a great way to spend the day. :) We were able to shower and clean up before we went to the airport. Fabulous. trish1c Posted January 2, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 2, 2012 When you arrive at the SJU AP, after you collect your luggage when you go outside the doors there will be a line to get a taxi. Very easy. You store luggage after the cruise at barrachina & then take a taxi back to the AP. Taxi drivers know barrachina so there are plenty of cabs in the vicinity. Check out the San Juan ports of call board here on CC. It has lots of good info.
