1sttimecruisingcouple Posted January 19, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2012 Sailing with Royal in Feb, and I was wondering what the food cost is on the island? I thought I read somewhere on a thread a burger was $30 american dollars? Also what is a good/safe place to eat besides the ship?
bookbabe Posted January 19, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2012 Food costs will vary depending on where you eat, but assume prices are about the same as or maybe a little more than you'd pay in a tourist location in the States. (Ever been to Disney? Kind of like food prices there, IME. :D) Everywhere is safe to eat. Cayman is a first world country. If you want to go mass market and eat at Burger King, Wendy's, KFC or Dairy Queen, you can do that. All of those chains are relatively easily reached from the port area. I think there's a Subway near Seven Mile Beach, too, but since I'm not a fan I've never bothered to go looking for it. ;) A pretty comprehensive guide to restaurants can be found here: http://www.caymangoodtaste.com/ Look for restaurants in the George Town or Seven Mile Beach areas. There will be menus, prices, maps, etc. on each listing, so you can get an idea of what's available and what the prices are like. (Prices will usually be listed in Cayman dollars - $1 CI = $1.20 US.) Cigar Dude Posted January 19, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 19, 2012 Everything is HIGH! We were at Royal Palms Resort and and burger and beer was $20! Use that as a guide!
elcuchio24 Posted January 19, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 19, 2012 $30 for a hamburger? No. But it is expensive, probably one of the most expensive ports in the carrib. We had a couple draft Caybrew beers at the little restaurant on the tender pier an it was $16US:rolleyes:
drew sailbum Posted January 19, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 19, 2012 For reference Burger King: Two cheeseburgers, one order large fries, one large soda for CI$6.30 = US$7.88 Adjust your prices and expectations accordingly.
TurtleTagger Posted January 19, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 19, 2012 And 15% gratuity is automatically added to your bill at most sit down establishments, so check your bill before adding a tip.
Capt_BJ Posted January 19, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 19, 2012 And 15% gratuity is automatically added to your bill at most sit down establishments, so check your bill before adding a tip. so to simplify the math, when you see the prices in CI, take your US dollars and figure a 40% tip and you'll be pretty close . . . ;)
serene56 Posted January 24, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 24, 2012 i wonder if that place across the street from the pier - turn left- tortuga place I think is its name... they sold these beef patties that look like pies Last time we were there they were a buck--boy were they good. But we have not been here for quite a few years now.
Colorado Kat Posted January 24, 2012 #9 Share Posted January 24, 2012 Cayman is pricey. Some places take USA$1 = Cayman $1, but others convert.
MissRabbit Posted January 24, 2012 #10 Share Posted January 24, 2012 what are some places near the tender pier that serve nice island food?
bookbabe Posted January 24, 2012 #11 Share Posted January 24, 2012 Some places take USA$1 = Cayman $1, but others convert. Really? Which places? 'cause I've never found any that would take US at par, and I'd really like to shop there if there are ones that do...
Irish1978 Posted January 24, 2012 #12 Share Posted January 24, 2012 Grand Cayman is probably populated 60/40 in favour of ex-pats who work in the financial sector. The area you will be docking is Georgetown and there are not many 'island' food places like you would find on some of the other smaller islands as demand for that kind of food in that area is not especially high and most of the offerings will be quite American. Food prices can be high depending on what you eat as the majority of fresh (fish excluded) produce has to be imported.
xplor97 Posted January 24, 2012 #13 Share Posted January 24, 2012 The places that take USA$1 = Cayman $1, have already increased their prices by 20% to assume the normal USA$1 = Cayman $1.20. Don't be fooled.
rhcpchika1 Posted January 30, 2012 #14 Share Posted January 30, 2012 thanks for the website! we are going to be out geocaching the whole day, so it'd be nice to plan in our lunch also!
Colorado Kat Posted February 3, 2012 #15 Share Posted February 3, 2012 Really? Which places? 'cause I've never found any that would take US at par, and I'd really like to shop there if there are ones that do... I really don't shop a lot in the Caymans, so I was referring to food and drink. But as another poster pointed out, I'm sure those prices have already been inflated. (For shopping, I did have to buy some "Big Black Dick Rum". Makes for a great gift. Engenders lively discussion.) bookbabe Posted February 3, 2012 #16 Share Posted February 3, 2012 I really don't shop a lot in the Caymans, so I was referring to food and drink. Again, which places? Food and drink at par is even better than souvenirs at par... :D
BeachBlondie Posted February 5, 2012 #17 Share Posted February 5, 2012 To give you an idea of food prices on Grand Cayman, DH and I had lunch at Royal Palms on Seven Mile Beach last Wednesday. Two cheeseburgers with fries along with two drinks was $53 - the view from the beach however was priceless!:D
